[Lmuse-user] [ANN] MusE 4.0 released
It is with great joy we present to you the final release of MusE 4.0. A great many things have been added and improved since the last stable release, nine months ago. To give a rather useless metric about the amount of work that has gone into MusE 4.0, our code repository has had more than 700 commits since the release of MusE 3.1.1! Here is an extremely condensed list of the most important changes since 3.1.1: * The core feature of 4.0 is the redesigned user interface with a huge amount of quality of life improvements. - Tabbed UI with Docks for common utility editors like Marker List, Mastertrack List and Event List. - All new dark theme with a lot of graphical improvements including lots of icons reworked in vector format. - Many new toolbars for quick access to common operations. - A lot of menu operations now list their related keyboard shortcut. - Many new keyboard shortcuts. * We now have an AppImage for easy installation on all distributions, both for releases and the bleeding edge development version. * Many many other fixes and improvements. For me atleast it makes a world of difference to only have to load the song and not having to remember all the connections, patches, levels or whatever. Performance wise I cannot really say, Zynaddsubfx was not built to be used as a plugin so it might be that it works best standalone but I would still use the VST or LV2 version as long as there was no breaking problem. > > And Happy New Year to all. > The same to you :) Regards, Robert -- Check out the vibrant tech community on one of the world's most engaging tech sites, Slashdot.org! http://sdm.link/slashdot ___ Lmuse-user mailing list Lmuse-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/lmuse-user

Re: [Lmuse-user] [lmuse-user] Calf LV2 GUIs + Muse
Hello Andrew, Does this go for all LV2 plugins or do some work? There are two guis for a plugin, the MusE-generated gui and the plugins own gui. If you right click in the PORT column for the synth you should have an entry for Show Gui and Show Native Gui. Show Native Gui should show what you want. Also if you double click on the PORT column for the synth you should get the native gui. If the menu entry for Show Native Gui is missing it probably means that there was some dependency missing during compilation so it was not enabled. If that is the case, please check the output from cmake: When I run it in my preferred way I get the following: cmake -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=release ../muse-git/muse3/ -- The C compiler identification is GNU 6.3.0 ... The following components will be built: --- ALSA support RTAudio support SoundIO support OSC (Liblo) support DSSI support LV2 support LV2 Gtk2 UI support <--- Native VST support Fluidsynth support If the UI support is missing it should have told you earlier in the cmake output which lib was missing. Is there any warning/error? But then in MusE > recording my bass with the Behringer Guitar Link does not produce any > sound in > the Wave track. > I'm not 100% sure but I believe jack does not support doing this. The backend, which connects to the soundcard can only be connected to one soundcard, so if you use the GuitarLink you need to listen through this device also. The reason why jack does not support two soundcards is that different devices are generally not clock synced, taking data from one device and sending it to another will after a while lead to syncronization problems. It is possible to fix such issues with resampling but jack has, to my knowledge, no such functionality. There _is_ another way to do it, connecting two soundcards to jack, I forget the name but there is some utility program that connect to jack as a client and have it's own soundcard connection, and internal resampling to take care of clock sync problems. <...> > > SBLive card eh? > > Yes, I currently cannot afford a new sound card, but hopefully at a later > time. > > I hope it wasn't desaster for you to fix all these bugs in the SB driver. > It was a while since I used SB-Live but I have fond memories, a very good soundcard :) As I recall it works best when you run it at 48khz. Then we should be able to tell if these functions are actually called (if the prints are printed or not) or if the problem happens earlier. Re: [Lmuse-user] [Lmuse-developer] Great new fixes, features
Cool stuff Tim! I haven't had time to test yet, you hinted that the theme/style problems may have been overcome? Is it maybe time to move to the dark theme as standard then? :) I've actually done quite a bit of recording last week (first time in a year pretty much...) and new MusE worked pretty good for me. As always there are some annoyances that I should try to bring up and/or fix myself. Right now the only one I remember though is the new monitoring. I record lots and lots of audio tracks, all of them connected to the same audio-in, generally a microphone. Having all these tracks turning on monitoring means the input signal (and with that, the noise) is multiplied with each track. I find myself turning off monitoring on all but the one that I'm recording on, which in practice means it's actually much more cumbersome to record new tracks now, as there is no automatic monitoring turned on. It strikes me while writing this that maybe the monitor for audio should be on the input track instead of the wave tracks? Though that means any effects affecting the sound on the tracks won't be heard while recording. Maybe if the monitor on the audio input is the one turned on by default, to easily get input sound but then having monitors on all wave tracks that are tri-state like I outlined before, 1. off, 2. monitor-while-rec (like it used to work), 3. monitor-on. Though monitoring in these different stages might be confusing for users also.. Hard to get a solution good for all scenarios I guess.. 2017-03-17 1:50 GMT+01:00 Tim: > Here are some snapshots of the new icons in action. > > I took a philosophy that, especially in the mixer, > the button icons should be unobtrusive and dull - > they should not distract the user until the button > is on or 'active'. > When they are off or 'inactive', the dull colour means > 'all is OK normal, nothing to be alerted to'. > Thus the user is 'alerted' when the icons 'come alive' > with colour. > > Three snapshots: With Normal, Dark, and Ardour stylesheets applied. > Here you can see the 'proxy' soloing and newly added 'proxy' muting. > > https://www.dropbox.com/s/pcjtij2cbxqyqpd/snapshot_new_ > icons_ardour.jpeg?dl=0 > > https://www.dropbox.com/s/4oe8lo0gbnis5a0/snapshot_new_ > icons_dark.jpeg?dl=0 > > https://www.dropbox.com/s/mv0dk3z7m66vsnm/snapshot_new_ > icons_normal.jpeg?dl=0 > > Tim. > > > -- > Check out the vibrant tech community on one of the world's most > engaging tech sites, Slashdot.org! http://sdm.link/slashdot > ___ > Lmuse-developer mailing list > lmuse-develo...@lists.sourceforge.net > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/lmuse-developer > -- Check out the vibrant tech community on one of the world's most engaging tech sites, Slashdot.org! http://sdm.link/slashdot ___ Lmuse-user mailing list Lmuse-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/lmuse-user

A nice distortion effect for a > bass, defined as a MIDI track? The midi track uses a synth to make it's bass sound, right? Perhaps a fluidsynth? The dist effect should be added to the audio source, which in this case hopefully is a plugin. Find the rack for the synth and put a dist effect there. There should be plenty of distortions if you have installed from a common distribution. I can explain in more detail if you like but no time now, just thought I would push you in the right direction :) Regards, Robert -- Monitor Your Dynamic Infrastructure at Any Scale With Datadog! Re: [Lmuse-user] crash on saving
Hi André, that's bad :( As I can't reproduce this (not now anyway). Some things to test: 1. does it crash if you resave an empty project? Meaning, do you need to add something specific to the project? 2. start muse with arguments -apNI2D , this will skip connecting jack, loading plugins and turn on debug trace. Does it crash in this scenario? Send the debug trace. 3. recompile muse with debug info. Can be done for instance by modifying the compile_muse.sh and replacing -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=release with -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=debug after installing and before running muse, run the command 'ulimit -c unlimited' to allow the operating system to store core dumps. Now, if MusE crashes in this scenario opening the core file with gdb will hopefully show the problem. Report back and do ask if something is unclear. Thanks, Robert 2015-07-08 12:22 GMT+02:00 André Sklenář andre.skle...@gmail.com: Hiall. i started making some music again, when a most unfortunate thing happened - muse crashed right on ctrl+s, losing my progress exactly at a time i wanted to save it :-/ So i found out that this happens every time you save a project which overwrites a file. Hi Alan, 2014-11-02 12:29 GMT+01:00 Alan Lee dbpa...@gmail.com: Hi Robert, I think I found what is the problem. I used the Channel Info to set the instrument / vol / pan, which seems can only be reserved in Muse project (.med) but they cannot be exported to MIDI. In order to export to MIDI, need to open the pianoroll view and use the Ctrl button in the lower right of the view window to add the MIDI events. Please check if I am correct? Actually I used the ChannelInfo to set the pan. A common issue here is that you need to click the little button next to each setting to actually apply it at a certain position in the song though. Hi Tim, Long time no hear man :) 2014-07-25 7:05 GMT+02:00 Tim E. Real termt...@rogers.com: ... Also another thing I would like would be middle-click panning of the piano roll view, not sure if this is just not working for me or not implemented. Elia No, it's currently hardwired for the left mouse button . In theory it's straightforward to alter the mouse button code which operates the feature. But... Currently the middle mouse button is reserved for deleting a note. So we'd have to add a Setting which swaps them and so on. Actually... upon examination, it feels a little weird, dangerous, to allow deleting notes with middle mouse button while NOT in 'Pointer', 'Pencil', or 'Eraser' tool mode (ie Pan, Zoom modes etc). So we could probably /reclaim/ the middle button from 'Delete' to 'Same as left button' while in these tool modes, without resorting to yet another Setting :-) Just wanted to give a life sign and comment that changing the behaviour is no problem for me. I never knew it was possible to use middlebutton anyway. I usually either use the eraser tool (E) or select the note(s) and use DEL key. MusE 2.1 Jan 06, 2013 Happy new year everybody and happy new MusE release! We've tried hard to break tradition and release somewhat quicker than what we usually been able to. So without further ado, here we are with a shiny 2.1 release. Assortment of topics worked on this time around are: * Native VST support, first drop: effect rack isn't supported yet and some synths are misbehaving a bit but it should be usable. * New type of drum track with easier instrument handling * Improved Wave Editor. * Improved midi import/export * Longtime wierdness in MusE, song-type is finally removed * Improved: Deicsonze soft synthesizer: Fixed crash, bugs, added ladspa plugins * Added: Request from forums: Auto-start Jack upon MusE startup. Command-line disable switch -J added * Added aftertouch controller handling * Piano KB and drum list show coloured dots when per-pitch controllers exist or have data. * Improved: Instrument Editor (controller tab): Redesigned. Fixed MANY bugs * Improved: Midi controller graph 'Ctrl' popup menus now unified (cascading). * Improved: built-in templates and removed lots of unneeded definitions * Improved: Velocity graphs. Icon for showing per-note or all velocities * Improved: Piano KB has current selected note (yellow). For velocity/polyaftertouch/other per-note ctrls * Added 'speaker' icon to drum edit. And drum list and piano keyboard now obey the 'speaker' icon * Improved: Multi-port (aka multi-channel) midi import and export * Added Gain knob on channel strip for audio tracks * Changed WaveTrack and AudioInput to create mono tracks instead of stereo * Added: Informative text on Undo/Redo buttons/menu text/tooltips (Undo AddTrack etc). * Fixed CR:3567893 Play Event on note creation * Bug 369, 372: New informative ERROR, WARNING and HINT messages in cmake build script. * Bug 381: No synths listed in Edit menu: main.cpp: Move initMidiSynth() ahead of MusE. * Feature request 3565102: FLAC audio file import. * Fix for forum topic Ordering of simultaneous events. * Summer sleep is over! plugins can now be grouped * Finished the Sysex Editor in the Instrument Editor. * increased zoom range in arranger, reversed zoom in wave editor * Internal fluidsynth and simpledrums search project dir for missing sounds to ease portability, and if no sounds are found a load file dialog is shown For more information and additional changes see the changelog: http://lmuse.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/lmuse/trunk/muse2/ChangeLog?revision=1675 Find the download at: https://sourceforge.net/projects/lmuse/files/ MusE on! Re: [Lmuse-user] [Lmuse-developer] A snapshot ... Committed now.
Hi Dan, 2012/12/12 Dan MacDonald allc...@gmail.com: Why does MusE have both that 'Select Controller' 'S' menu as well as the CTRL menu? I don't know how Tim plans to make VST params more accessible for automation but I'd prefer they be located under the CTRL menu vs the S menu if they only go under one. Maybe this is fully understood but I thought I would explain how I think it works anyway. And if my understanding is wrong or incomplete I'm sure I'll be reeducated :) Here's a screenshot of the automatable parameters available in the arranger for the VST mdaPiano. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7739312/muse/muse_mdapiano.png For softsynths I would expect these to be the ones most people use. I'm not sure these are midi parameters by definition, I don't think they are controlled through midi. This synth does not seem to expose any specific midi controllers except Program, listed under the [CTRL] button. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7739312/muse/mda_midi.png Ok, seems I'm already learning stuff! I compared this output to what is available for a DSSI synth and the parameters listed in the arranger are also available in the midi editor CTRL menu. So it seems you are right and this is what Tim probably getting at, they should be there. I think you should try the arranger editing in the meantime though :) --- As for the difference between the [S] and the [CTRL] buttons, check the tooltips. [S] is for selecting which parameter to view in the current controller view. [CTRL] is for adding additional controller views. On the whole, MusE 2 is shaping up to be significantly more user friendly and with a much nicer workflow than its Linux alternatives but I'm quite concerned about VST automation. I've had a few goes now with no luck and if I understand how I'm supposed to be doing this now it seems very messy in comparison with qtractor and A3's VST MIDI automation so I'm hoping its not too late to get something easier sorted out here. Your long explanation on VSTs vs DSSI plugins went over my head but basically I'd encourage you to look at how easy it is to add VST MIDI param automation to a track under qtractor and try to mimic that as closely as possible under Muse. Of course, qtractor shows the automation within the track instead of having a dedicated display area within its piano roll window like Muse - I'm not bothered about that aspect. Its having to assign a parameter to a controller which I find a messy and confusing process. I'm sorry but you'll have to be a bit more verbose in your instructions Tim if I'm to be successful in trying out the current implementation. Here's how I think it is supposed to work currently: Add your VST plugin in the arranger Click the numbers within the Automation column in the arranger for the VST plugin Find the parameter you wish to automate, then choose its 'Assign' sub menu This is the confusing bit now as I'm presented with a MIDI control window. The 'port' dropdown seems like it shouldn't really be a dropdown as you can't choose anything other than the current port anyway. What about the channel? Do I set that to the same channel as the synth or the MIDI track? Control type - I have no idea but I presume Control7 is a 7bit MIDI controller and Control14 is 14bit and that in most cases people should choose Control7 right? Hi and Lo? What are they for? It seems to me that Lo sets the actual MIDI controller number to assign to but I dunno why its called 'Lo' as no matter what setting I choose for control type 'Hi' never becomes available as a configurable setting. So basically I think all the user should need to do here is set the 'Lo' to the MIDI controller number they want to use for the chosen parameter but its an awfully confusing way to do it. Presuming I have assigned a controller to my parameter, I then go to the piano roll, click 'CTRL', go to the 'Common Controls' submenu, add a the relevant controller, draw stuff, play - nothing! :/ I admit I haven't kept up with the addtions to the Select Controller menu and I'm more an audio than midi guy so I might be barking up the wrong tree... ;) BUT, I don't think you should use the Common Controls sub-menu when controlling a VST synth. The controllers supported by the synth should already be listed on the Select Controller menu. _If I got this wrong, please correct me_ Is there any specific controller that you want to manipulate? I would guess most automatable parameters for a VST synth are listed in the Automation column for the synth in the arranger. Are you sure these aren't the ones you are after? We had a similar issue from someone running Lubuntu. So I installed Lubuntu and discovered that it was the choice of desktop which caused this. KDE, Gnome, and the Unity desktop worked OK, while all the others did not. The synths windows did not open and the Markers window did not open. I am willing to bet that when you try to open the Markers window it does the same thing? (That was the poster's original complaint.) So unfortunately I can only recommend you to try another desktop. Try KDE, Gnome, Unity, or XFCE which also apparently works. If I'm not mistaken Guy had it working with previous releases so there must be some other parameter than desktop environment. Does it still work if you install an older version? Regards, Robert Hope this helps. Tim. -- Monitor your physical, virtual and cloud infrastructure from a single web console.
