[Lmuse-user] [ANN] MusE 4.0 released

It is with great joy we present to you the final release of MusE 4.0.
A great many things have been added and improved since the last stable
release, nine months ago. To give a rather useless metric about the
amount of work that has gone into MusE 4.0, our code repository has
had more than 700 commits since the release of MusE 3.1.1!

Here is an extremely condensed list of the most important changes since 3.1.1:
* The core feature of 4.0 is the redesigned user interface with a huge
  amount of quality of life improvements.
  - Tabbed UI with Docks for common utility editors like Marker List,
Mastertrack List and Event List.
  - All new dark theme with a lot of graphical improvements including lots
of icons reworked in vector format.
  - Many new toolbars for quick access to common operations.
  - A lot of menu operations now list their related keyboard shortcut.
  - Many new keyboard shortcuts.
* We now have an AppImage for easy installation on all distributions, both
  for releases and the bleeding edge development version.
* Many many other fixes and improvements.

crash bug from the initial implementation

I've had some trouble using the VST and LV2 version in MusE, crashes during
song loading etc, might be my build of them... if they work fine for you I
definitely think you should use one of the plugin versions. For me atleast
it makes a world of difference to only have to load the song and not having
to remember all the connections, patches, levels or whatever.
Performance wise I cannot really say, Zynaddsubfx was not built to be used
as a plugin so it might be that it works best standalone but I would still
use the VST or LV2 version as long as there was no breaking problem.

Hello Andrew,

Does this go for all LV2 plugins or do some work?
There are two guis for a plugin, the MusE-generated gui and the plugins own
gui.
If you right click in the PORT column for the synth you should have an
entry for Show Gui and Show Native Gui. Show Native Gui should show what
you want.
Also if you double click on the PORT column for the synth you should get
the native gui.

If the menu entry for Show Native Gui is missing it probably means that
there was some dependency missing during compilation so it was not enabled.
If that is the case, please check the output from cmake:

When I run it in my preferred way I get the following:

cmake -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=release ../muse-git/muse3/

The following components will be built:

I'm not 100% sure but I believe jack does not support doing this. The
backend, which connects to the soundcard can only be connected to one
soundcard, so if you use the GuitarLink you need to listen through this
device also. The reason why jack does not support two soundcards is that
different devices are generally not clock synced, taking data from one
device and sending it to another will after a while lead to syncronization
problems. It is possible to fix such issues with resampling but jack has,
to my knowledge,  no such functionality.

There _is_ another way to do it, connecting two soundcards to jack, I
forget the name but there is some utility program that connect to jack as a
client and have it's own soundcard connection, and internal resampling to
take care of clock sync problems.

It was a while since I used SB-Live but I have fond memories, a very good
soundcard :)

I tried it now and it seems to work for me
I have two parts selected and open the pianoroll with Ctrl+E and use
alt+arrows, then the notes belonging to the relevant part is highlighted.

I know the alt-key is a bit wierd sometimes. It happens that the window
manager interferes (I use KDE btw) but if you tried a different shortcut,
it doesn't sound like that is the problem.

If it really doesn't play nice for you and you can debug some, the file
muse3/muse/midiedit/prcanvas.cpp
has the following lines around line number 814:

The printf lines aren't there in the code but if you add them like
shown and recompile + reinstall.

(if the prints are printed or not) or if the problem happens earlier.

My guess is that the shortcut for some reason is not triggered.

I haven't had time to test yet, you hinted that the theme/style problems
may have been overcome? Is it maybe time to move to the dark theme as
standard then? :)

I've actually done quite a bit of recording last week (first time in a year
pretty much...) and new MusE worked pretty good for me. As always there are
some annoyances that I should try to bring up and/or fix myself.
Right now the only one I remember though is the new monitoring.
I record lots and lots of audio tracks, all of them connected to the same
audio-in, generally a microphone. Having all these tracks turning on
monitoring means the input signal (and with that, the noise) is multiplied
with each track. I find myself turning off monitoring on all but the one
that I'm recording on, which in practice means it's actually much more
cumbersome to record new tracks now, as there is no automatic monitoring
turned on.
It strikes me while writing this that maybe the monitor for audio should be
on the input track instead of the wave tracks? Though that means any
effects affecting the sound on the tracks won't be heard while recording.
Maybe if the monitor on the audio input is the one turned on by default, to
easily get input sound but then having monitors on all wave tracks that are
tri-state like I outlined before, 1. off, 2. monitor-while-rec (like it
used to work), 3. monitor-on. Though monitoring in these different stages
might be confusing for users also..
Hard to get a solution good for all scenarios I guess..

Hello all,

Time has once again skipped forward, much faster than anticipated, so
we thought it was time to make another prerelease. Might not be quite
there yet so let's do the rounds and see if this works for you guys.

A selection of changes since pre1 are as follows:

- Bug #526 fixed: Crash on cut with scissors while master open
- More changes to the mixer look and feel, not the least added knobs
again :) sliders are still available as an option.
- Fixed configuration not possible to save in pre1
- Updated templates to 3.0
- Fixed color-theme switching no longer working
- Added keyboard navigation and manipulation in mixer.
- Midi file export: Added missing Aftertouch, PolyAftertouch support
- Fixed LV2 bugs regarding aftertouch and bank selection
- Fixed a bunch of gui editing bugs
- Jack midi input/outputs are now paired together
- Added instrument files for:
* Classic Cantabile SP-250
* Medeli SP4200
* Korg Krome (Bank Map KORG)

Hi All!

Here is the first prerelease of MusE 3.0 another overdue release
overflowing with improvements and additions.

+++ consider this mail a prerelease also, if something seems wrong in
the change list let me know. Or if I forgot something important. +++

Here is a condensed list of changes since the last release:
- Switched to Qt5
- New Plugin Path editor in Global Settings:
- System-wide move to double precision of all audio paths
- LV2 fix for very slow right-click synth 'presets' ex. amsynth
- LV2 support PowerOf2BlockLength
- LV2 support FixedBlockLength
- Mixer makeover with lots of fixes
- Arranger Track Info panel complete makeover
- New: Persistent routes jack audio and midi routes.
- Multi-channel Audio Track routing
- Improved automation editing, no multi-point editing yet though

- New wave drawing mode in arranger with a tiny outline of the wave file
- Added Native VST FX support (synths were already supported)
- Added support to resize notes and parts to the left with pencil tool

Hello Edwar,

Muse can run without jack but then muse looses audio output, only midi is
available.
At some point I think we discussed adding an alsa audio backend but it has
not happened yet.

Definitely sounds like a bug. What version of MusE are you using?
Also, does it behave the same if you try controlling the volume slider of a
track instead? Just trying to get a head start as to where to look for the
problem..

The midi track uses a synth to make it's bass sound, right? Perhaps a
fluidsynth?
The dist effect should be added to the audio source, which in this
case hopefully is a plugin.
Find the rack for the synth and put a dist effect there. There should
be plenty of distortions if you have installed from a common
distribution.

I can explain in more detail if you like but no time now, just thought
I would push you in the right direction :)

that's bad :(

As I can't reproduce this (not now anyway). Some things to test:

1. does it crash if you resave an empty project? Meaning, do you need
to add something specific to the project?

2. start muse with arguments -apNI2D  , this will skip connecting
jack, loading plugins and turn on debug trace. Does it crash in this
scenario? Send the debug trace.

3. recompile muse with debug info.
Can be done for instance by modifying the compile_muse.sh and
replacing -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=release with
-DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=debug
after installing and before running muse, run the command 'ulimit -c
unlimited' to allow the operating system to store core dumps.
Now, if MusE crashes in this scenario opening the core file with gdb
will hopefully show the problem.

Report back and do ask if something is unclear.

Please try again with the ChannelInfo and use the [All] button to
apply the change, I think it should work.

 No, it's currently hardwired for the left mouse button .

 In theory it's straightforward to alter the mouse button code which
  operates the feature.
 But... Currently the middle mouse button is reserved for deleting a note.
 So we'd have to add a Setting which swaps them and so on.
 Actually... upon examination, it feels a little weird, dangerous, to allow
  deleting notes with middle mouse button while NOT in 'Pointer', 'Pencil',
  or 'Eraser' tool mode (ie Pan, Zoom modes etc).
 So we could probably /reclaim/  the middle button from 'Delete' to
  'Same as left button' while in these tool modes, without resorting to yet
  another Setting :-)

Just wanted to give a life sign and comment that changing the
behaviour is no problem for me. I never knew it was possible to use
middlebutton anyway.
I usually either use the eraser tool (E) or select the note(s) and use DEL key.

 Just wondering if there is any Midi in it? It sounds like entriely made of 
 audio recordings.

Most of it is pure audio recordings, there are some keyboards on some
of the tracks, that's all midi.
There are also some improvements to the drums which are are midi.

Happy new year everybody and happy new MusE release!
We've tried hard to break tradition and release somewhat quicker than
what we usually been able to.
So without further ado, here we are with a shiny 2.1 release.

Assortment of topics worked on this time around are:
* Native VST support, first drop: effect rack isn't supported yet and
some synths are misbehaving a bit but it should be usable.
* New type of drum track with easier instrument handling
* Improved Wave Editor.
* Improved midi import/export
* Longtime wierdness in MusE, song-type is finally removed
* Improved: Deicsonze soft synthesizer: Fixed crash, bugs, added ladspa plugins
* Added: Request from forums: Auto-start Jack upon MusE startup.
Command-line disable switch -J added
* Added aftertouch controller handling
* Piano KB and drum list show coloured dots when per-pitch controllers
exist or have data.
* Improved: Instrument Editor (controller tab): Redesigned. Fixed MANY bugs
* Improved: Midi controller graph 'Ctrl' popup menus now unified (cascading).
* Improved: built-in templates and removed lots of unneeded definitions
* Improved: Velocity graphs. Icon for showing per-note or all velocities

think it works anyway. And if my understanding is wrong or incomplete

Here's a screenshot of the automatable parameters available in the
arranger for the VST mdaPiano.

For softsynths I would expect these to be the ones most people use.
I'm not sure these are midi parameters by definition, I don't think
they are controlled through midi.

This synth does not seem to expose any specific midi controllers
except Program, listed under the [CTRL] button.

Ok, seems I'm already learning stuff! I compared this output to what
is available for a DSSI synth and the parameters listed in the
arranger are also available in the midi editor CTRL menu. So it seems
you are right and this is what Tim probably getting at, they should be
there.
I think you should try the arranger editing in the meantime though :)

As for the difference between the [S] and the [CTRL] buttons, check
the tooltips.
[S] is for selecting which parameter to view in the current controller
view. [CTRL] is for adding additional controller views.

If I'm not mistaken Guy had it working with previous releases so there must
be some other parameter than desktop environment.

Does it still work if you install an older version?

This is a bug fix release that mainly fixes a problem with moving
plugins in the plugin rack.

Some changes:
- Fixed controllers go wacky after moving effects rack plugins up/down.
- Changed naming convention for recorded wave files to include track
name and it's take number
- Use cmake's own FindPythonLibs module instead of pkgconfig to detect
Python
- Updated Czech translation from Pavel Fric
- Increased zoom range a bit in arranger

MusE 2.0 June 30, 2012

Hello everybody! Finally it has happened, nearly two years from the
last stable release we are ready to present to you the final MusE 2.0
version. A lot has happened and changed, still the migration from 1.1
to 2.0 should be quite easy and definitely worth it.

The big changes since 1.1 are as follows:
* Moved to qt4, this affects the visuals and potentially improved
portability
* Graphical automation in the arranger
* A new score editor
* MusE now defaults to using midi through Jack, -A enables native alsa
support
* New style MDI gui with a bunch of configuration options to satisfy all
tastes
* Redone midi editing tool dialogs with lots of new functionality
* Lots and lots and lots of internal small and big changes to improve
stability, speed and functionality
* PSIIF support (support for: probably something important I forgot)

A much condensed list of changes since the last beta are as follows:
- Sync fix: MusE now records tempo changes from externally clocked midi.
- Finally! Audio controller playback has smth frame resolution
even with large audio buffers.
- Feature: Midi control of audio paramters.
- Lots of automation improvements
- Switched to use JACK midi
- Added: -A switch: Force inclusion of ALSA midi even if using Jack.
- Lots of leaks removed
- Added colorhints to iR and oR routing buttons
- Templates: File dialog: Lots of changes
- Lots of widget focus fixes
- Allow loading of DSSI synths in LADSPA browser.
- Midi editors: Added Delta Mode button to Note Info toolbar.
