[Loadstone] Maybe Figured Out
I think I might have figured out part of the point share issue I wrote about in an earlier message. I needed to turn two fingers clockwise to activate the picker. I am not sure what that particular gesture is called. Mike Hanson ___ Loadstone mailing list Loadstone@loadstone-gps.com http://lists.loadstone-gps.com/listinfo/loadstone
[Loadstone] Presentation
I gave a presentation over the phone to the Perkins School for the Blind in Massachusetts today about my hike of the Appalachian Trail and was able to give Loadstone something of a plug. Presentations might be a way I can ask for donations on Loadstone’s behalf. Is there anything in particular you would like me to say? Is there anything in particularly you would like me to avoid saying? One unique strength of Loadstone in my opinion is that it does not require a data plan. This is important for two reasons. First, you can use Loadstone where you don’t get a cell phone signal, as opposed to GPS apps that come standard on an IPhone in my experience. I have used Loadstone when I needed to get up at night while camping. I activated it and went from there. I have also used it to mark hunting stands and fishing spots and other points of interest that are well out of cell phone coverage on my Nokia N82 and N95. Although I don’t have either of these phones, I am confident that I will be able to do the same things with my IPhone. Second, you can use Loadstone if you don’t want a phone contract but want its GPS capabilities. I don’t know why someone would have an IPhone just to use Loadstone but that is an option. Loadstone is the only GPS app that does not require a data plan and is accessible to blind users in my experience. I have heard of blind people using Gaya GPS. That program is, at best, marginally accessible in my opinion. Loadstone does not seem to require much more of a user than other GPS programs. You need to create checkpoint lists but the tradeoff is often greater accuracy than you might get with, say Google or Apple maps in my experience. Those programs can often leave you across a parking lot from your intended destination. You can get much closer than that by saving a location with Loadstone. That is well worth the tradeoff! [Loadstone] Finally!
I finally got my database from the previous version of Loadstone to the version on my IPhone. The process seems more forgiving than on any Nokia phone I used. My checkpoints files were no problem. Loadstone seems to work as well on an IPhone as it did on previous platforms for bus travel. I use it to announce stops in case the driver doesn't. The reason for the long transfer process was the size of my database. It was at least three times the size most email servers can handle and Loadstone does not seem to work with file sharing using ITunes. I have many points unique to me, such as the location of campground lavatories, campsites, and other data of limited value to anybody but me. Having said that, I would be happy to export this database if someone can tell me how to do that. Its size might be an issue. It contains all my data from my 2010 hike of the Appalachian Trail. It goes without saying that I backed my IPhone up as soon as the transfer was complete. [Loadstone] Coppying Files Question
I mailed myself a checkpoints file, opened it, went to share, and can't find an option to allow me to copy the file to Loadstone. Is there anything else I need to do to copy the file to Loadstone? I can air drop the file, send it to Dropbox, import it with other programs, and print it. I don't know what I need to do to copy checkpoints files to Loadstone. Please let me know how I might solve this problem. Thank You, Mike Hanson ___ Loadstone mailing list Loadstone@loadstone-gps.com http://lists.loadstone-gps.com/listinfo/loadstone
[Loadstone] File Transfer Using ITunes
Is there any way to transfer a database to Loadstone using ITunes? If so, can you tell me how to transfer a database from my phone to Loadstone? The database I want to transfer seems too large to send via Gmail. Thank You, Mike Hanson ___ Loadstone mailing list Loadstone@loadstone-gps.com http://lists.loadstone-gps.com/listinfo/loadstone
[Loadstone] Converting .txt to .ilspt
Please accept my apologies for asking this question twice. I can't find a Loadstone archive. How can I convert a .txt file to a .ilspt file? I have Office 2010. Thank You, Mike Hanson ___ Loadstone mailing list Loadstone@loadstone-gps.com http://lists.loadstone-gps.com/listinfo/loadstone
[Loadstone] Please Disregard
Please disregard my last email. I believe I figured things out enough to proceed. Mike Hanson ___ Loadstone mailing list Loadstone@loadstone-gps.com http://lists.loadstone-gps.com/listinfo/loadstone
[Loadstone] Checkpoints Question
Shawn, Thank you for your help with importing checkpoints. Is there any way to load checkpoints by list? I don't see a load checkpoints function in this version of Loadstone. If there is no such function yet, I am not complaining. Thank You, Mike Hanson ___ Loadstone mailing list Loadstone@loadstone-gps.com http://lists.loadstone-gps.com/listinfo/loadstone
Re: [Loadstone] Loadstone Digest, Vol 117, Issue 6
My hike-related website is n longer up. Like you, I have nothing even close to unlimited funding. Information is in the documentary, which the Discovery Channel might be considering. I have talked to Gary Steffens and we might include something about technological changes since 010, including the need to switch to the IPhone. I can think of a way to put a plug in if we do that. [Loadstone] Creating Checkpoints Files
How do I create a checkpoint list with Loadstone? Also, how can I save and update checkpoint lists? Thank You, Mike Hanson ___ Loadstone mailing list Loadstone@loadstone-gps.com http://lists.loadstone-gps.com/listinfo/loadstone
[Loadstone] Bluetooth Receiver Questions
Has anybody on this list used a Bluetooth GPS receiver with an IPhone? If so, which receivers would you recommend? How did you get Loadstone or other programs to use data from a Bluetooth receiver instead of the IPhone’s built-in chip? Using the IPhone’s built-in GPS chip makes sense and works well for most situations but there are two advantages to using a high-quality Bluetooth receiver in my experience. First, the IPhone’s battery will probably last longer. Second, Bluetooth receivers seem more accurate in my experience. The IPhone’s receiver does not handle the urban canyon effect very well compared to Bluetooth receivers, although it does much better than either a Nokia N82 or N95. Mike Hanson ___ Loadstone mailing list Loadstone@loadstone-gps.com http://lists.loadstone-gps.com/listinfo/loadstone
[Loadstone] Bluetooth Receiver Question
The one drawback of using any GPS program I know about with an IPhone is that it drains the battery. I don’t blame Loadstone for that. It seems to use about the same amount of battery life as any other GPS program I’ve used. I don’t know if the IPhone’s GPS receiver drains battery life or the app does. Would configuring Loadstone to use a Bluetooth receiver reduce the demand on the IPhone’s battery? There might well be some reason Loadstone doesn’t support a Bluetooth receiver with an IPhone. I am not sure anybody makes Bluetooth GPS receivers these days. There are other workarounds to deal with battery life issues. I thought I would ask if there are plans to implement use of Bluetooth receivers. The IPhone's built-in receiver seems as accurate as one could want. It is certainly better than early Royltec receivers in my experience. Mike Hanson ___ Loadstone mailing list Loadstone@loadstone-gps.com http://lists.loadstone-gps.com/listinfo/loadstone
[Loadstone] Evaluation Question
How would I write a review of Loadstone on the app store? It seems as good as it was when I used it to hike the Appalachian Trail. I don't know of anything better that has come out for the IPhone since then. Mike Hanson ___ Loadstone mailing list Loadstone@loadstone-gps.com http://lists.loadstone-gps.com/listinfo/loadstone
[Loadstone] Feature Suggestion
Loadstone has two settings for location access (always and never). Quite a few other programs allow you to set locations to when you are using the app. Are there any plans to add this option? Doing so is not critical in my opinion. Mike Hanson ___ Loadstone mailing list Loadstone@loadstone-gps.com http://lists.loadstone-gps.com/listinfo/loadstone
[Loadstone] Geocoding Question
Again, good job porting Loadstone to the IPhone. I've figured out most of what I used to do with the previous version. The only thing I haven't figured out is how to geocode addresses and enter the coordinates into Loadstone on an IPhone. How can I do that? Thank You, Mike Hanson ___ Loadstone mailing list Loadstone@loadstone-gps.com http://lists.loadstone-gps.com/listinfo/loadstone
[Loadstone] I think I'm stuck on the last step.
Please accept my apologies if someone explained this process before and I forgot how it's done but I'm stuck on the last step of how to import data points into Loadstone. I geocoded the data and emailed the file to myself but don't know how to import it into Loadstone. Can someone either explain how I can import it or is there a video that explains how I can do that? Thank You, Mike Hanson ___ Loadstone mailing list Loadstone@loadstone-gps.com http://lists.loadstone-gps.com/listinfo/loadstone
[Loadstone] Differences between chekpoints and Routes
What are the differences between checkpoints and routes? It looks like the main difference is that routes have directions associated with points. Also, is there a way Loadstone can convert checkpoints to routes? Thanks, Mike Hanson ___ Loadstone mailing list Loadstone@loadstone-gps.com http://lists.loadstone-gps.com/listinfo/loadstone
[Loadstone] Routes Question
I converted a checkpoints file to a routes file. I tried to walk using it and Loadstone did not shift from one route point to another when I tried to get it to show the closest route point. I had it set to both when I had to choose forward, reverse or both. I didn't set a destination. What is happening? Mike Hanson ___ Loadstone mailing list Loadstone@loadstone-gps.com http://lists.loadstone-gps.com/listinfo/loadstone
[Loadstone] File Copying Question
Does anybody know how to copy files from Loadstone to my computer using ITunes? I've heard that "sucks." I wouldn't ask but my email program does not allow me to email myself files like my database because of its large size. Thank You, Mike Hanson ___ Loadstone mailing list Loadstone@loadstone-gps.com http://lists.loadstone-gps.com/listinfo/loadstone
[Loadstone] Feature Suggestion and Two Questions
First, I suggest having Loadstone work with Bluetooth so it can work with external Bluetooth receivers. Second, my IPhone 6S says "no signal when it seems to get a signal. What might be happening? Third, how do I export my database to pointshare with the crrent version of Loadstone from my phone? I know how to import my points but not how to export my data.
