Currently there is a problem with the Update Manger under Lubuntu so
automatic updates aren’t available. The best bet, at the moment, is to
use Synaptic Package Manager.

Preferences > Synaptic Package Manage

To upgrade click on Reload then Mark All Upgrades if the tick above Apply
turns green there are updates, click Apply and follow the instructions.

If you want to use a Forum, rather than a mailing list, use the Ubuntu one

There is still the ubuntuforums. With many request, we can have a

 Other solution is to ask for a dedicated forum on ubuntuforums, like

I prefer this solution, & as mentioned elsewhere, a link to it from

[Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu Lucid Beta 3 "Multi-Language"

2010-04-24 Thread Julien Lavergne
Hi,

The Lubuntu Lucid Beta 3 is now available. We are now close to the final
release, this beta should be the last one before final release.

The status of this final release is not determined yet ("beta stable",
"rc final" ...), that's why its a beta and not a rc like other *buntu.
However, final release is still planned for the end of this month, or in
very early May.

== New stuff since Beta 2 ==
* Many translations directly included.
* Lubuntu-desktop PPA added by default on installation.
* Up-to-date libfm and pcmanfm2.

== Specific Lubuntu changes ==
Lubuntu still contains modifications not available in the official
repository, you can see them in the Lubuntu PPA [1] :
- New pcmanfm2 and libfm (LP: #523433)
- lubuntu-default-settings with pcmanfm2 support
- Fix for blurry shutdown-icon from elementary-icons (LP: #527345)
- Autologin support in ubiquity (LP: #546445)

== Testing needed ==
I'll appreciate some feedbacks about the followings recent additions :
- pcmanfm2, the new filemanager, is still in beta state. Please report
bugs on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/SubTeams/TestingSubTeam/pcmanfm2Testing

== Known bugs ==
* If you test on a USB, the first screen will freeze for a moment when
you click on "Try Lubuntu ...". Just wait, it will continue as normal.
* Start menu of the Live-CD is not correctly translated.
* Updates available are not shown, you need to manually update your
system.

Er, pardon for asking, if I am missing the point...I notice many on
this thread are already on Lubuntu Lucid, not beta3, but beta2 or I
grant even earlier revisions; won't it be sufficient to just do an
update/upgrade? Why the need to download the whole iso?

As most peoples first glimpse of Lubuntu will be from the Live CD and/or a
clean install we need to make sure this is working OK and this is the
first multi-lingual ISO so that will need testing as well. Also, some of
us have also sorts of odds 'n' sods on our installs and need a clean
install to make sure we are reporting errors for the correct versions and
any advice we give or instructions we are writing are for a default
install.

Okay, Understood. Since the only addition to my system, besides updates,
is adobe flash, I think my updated system from beta2 fresh install would
be similar to beta3 fresh install. I'll let pass the fresh install this
time round. (I am enjoying myself too much too :) ) Will help to report
bugs, if any, whatever way I can.

So far the slypheed notes have generated lots of correspondence on the
slypheed mailing list (autofill address) long after I've reported it.
(not a bug, a 'feature' :) ). I just hope I won't cause unnecessary
'noise' due to my inexperience in Lubuntu too.

Found out why it takes so long to install. 139 languages installed, don’t
think that should happen. I’ll file a bug.

[Lubuntu-desktop] Is it acceptable to add even more new strings to PCManFM at this time?

2010-04-24 Thread PCMan
Hi list,
I found yet another issue with current PCManFM last night.
Names of some menu items are not self-explainatory enough.
It's not easy for beginners to figure out what the menu items do.
I just learned how to add tooltips for menu items and show them in status bar.
If we can add proper tooltips for menu items, this can greatly improve
usability.
I know we're in string freeze, but is it acceptable to add even more
new strings to PCManFM at this time?
The number of strings that needed to be added is about 30 ~ 40.
This is quite important for usability.
Since currently PCManFM is still in beta and its quality didn't meet
the requirements of a stable release, we won't have a stable release
or release candidate very soon. So we still have time to finish all
the translation prior to final release.

Opinions from translators?
If you guys allow me to do so, I'll add them later and inform you on
the mailing list when I've done it.
Otherwise, I'll leave them in a git branch. But I'm a little bit worry
about git branch because it doesn't seem to work well with some
translation systems and there might be conflicts in the future.
If these new strings are not going to be added this time, I'll release
pcmanfm 0.9.5 in about two days.

Anyways, I want to know what you think. So translations please share
your ideas with me.
Thanks!
