Some of you probably remember the release schedule message I sent some weeks back; ubuntu 12.04 will by no means include lxpanel2 and I guess the same goes for debian wheezy and both of them has 2+ years of support in the distribution level. LXPanel (hate it or not) will be around for a long time. I'll work with the recent changes and try to go to release in early January and will follow up on that release in February/March with a bug fixes focused release. This will get the additional code in a rather good state and the translators will be mostly done in time for at least lubuntu 12.04. This is all I need. Fixed release dates and stuff like that I am not a fan of (but being vocal WHEN to release if there are good progress is something I am even more a fan of!). At FSCONS I stumbled over a talk about Fedora and they had their release plan in the slides, got me thinking that I should do the same thing I did some months ago with alining the release schedules. And as always I think the major distros freeze dates are of interest when trying to plan ahead. I hope people participating in the actual projects listed can confirm my interpretation of the schedules. OpenSUSE: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Roadmap The latest release was this week, I am not sure how andrea coped with the summer releases I did. Hopefully it all went well =) For 12.2 the release date is 2012-07-12 and based on the release plan for 12.1 that would mean freezing in April or something like that. February 16 at 21:00 UTC is the freeze, bugs and minor changes are generally accepted later on. Beta 2 freeze is set to the 22nd of March and more or less marks the final step to get things in. Only security updates are accepted beyond here. Debian: http://release.debian.org The freeze is set to June 2012, so no later than May? (bugs and such aside) Arch linux does not schedule releases as far as I have understood. Based on this I would say that having major changes (API or others) is no later than February 2012. We had a discussion yesterday night (CEST) on IRC regarding the shape of LXDE components and when to release and stuff. GTK3 Support for building for GTK3 is in place for most of the components but not all. These should be the ones to look at. * gtknetcat * libfm * lxappearance-obconf * lxmenu-data * lxmusic * lxpanel * lxpolkit It might just need the correct build things and so on, I have really no clue here - I am just the messenger. Addendum: Not related to the above we also talked briefly about doing releases of the other components. I will put together a list of changes for the components that we can work with to decide of a new release is needed sooner or later for a specific component. I see that Julien Lavergne is mostly the only one that has been working on the apps but ideally, in a non technical opinion as I'm not a programmer, I think that the master branch in git should be reserved for bug fixes and pre-tested improvements. Untested code (like these recent gtk3 compatibility commits that have broken, for instance, lxpanel and lxterminal in a very basic way or gpicview that has something that looks like a typo and makes it not even compile) would be commited to another branch and then the commiter could ask for testing in the mailing list. The benefits for the workflow and for multiple contributions is evident. Yes please, more testing and more contributions. I applaud. I could make the buildbot produce the release tar files on successful builds if that would benefit people. I probably have to find how to make it build on updated git repos then. As it stands now I do the builds when I have time to watch them/as often as I get a "build needed" message from the Pootle server - a check is done every two hours during my "working hours" (7-24 CEST). Ideas and thoughts about the process to make things more lean is appreciated. I am not a developer skilled enough to hack on the actual source code but I am more than willing to dig in and do processes and workflows and stuff like that. If I can do things in script it is even better. It would be a good thing if some native speaker could check the
strings for both libfm and pcmanfm. I am not a native speaker and I
haven't read all the strings for a very long time but they probably can be
improved given that pcman isn't a native speaker either. If you know of
anyone being able to do this let them/me know.

This would gives us a reasonably bug free version for Lubuntu. I concur. This change is not that great and will not change to much of the experience any way.
