Yes.
Some of you probably remember the release schedule message I sent some
weeks back; ubuntu 12.04 will by no means include lxpanel2 and I guess
the same goes for debian wheezy and both of them has 2+ years of support
in the distribution level. LXPanel (hate it or not) will be around for a
long time.

I'll work with the recent changes and try to go to release in early
January and will follow up on that release in February/March with a bug
fixes focused release. This will get the additional code in a rather
good state and the translators will be mostly done in time for at least
lubuntu 12.04.

Objections?

Not in a branch at origin yet right?

This is all I need. Fixed release dates and stuff like that I am not a
fan of (but being vocal WHEN to release if there are good progress is
something I am even more a fan of!).

At FSCONS I stumbled over a talk about Fedora and they had their release
plan in the slides, got me thinking that I should do the same thing I
did some months ago with alining the release schedules.
And as always I think the major distros freeze dates are of interest
when trying to plan ahead.

I hope people participating in the actual projects listed can confirm my
interpretation of the schedules.

Fedora: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/17/Schedule
My assesment is that a release in February would be the last resort (not
counting bugs).

OpenSUSE: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Roadmap
The latest release was this week, I am not sure how andrea coped with
the summer releases I did. Hopefully it all went well =)
For 12.2 the release date is 2012-07-12 and based on the release plan
for 12.1 that would mean freezing in April or something like that.

Lubuntu: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrecisePangolin/ReleaseSchedule (draft!?)
The next Ubuntu release is a LTS, long term commitment and all that.
February 16 at 21:00 UTC is the freeze, bugs and minor changes are
generally accepted later on. Beta 2 freeze is set to the 22nd of March
and more or less marks the final step to get things in. Only security
updates are accepted beyond here.

Debian: http://release.debian.org
The freeze is set to June 2012, so no later than May? (bugs and such aside)

Arch linux does not schedule releases as far as I have understood.

Based on this I would say that having major changes (API or others) is
no later than February 2012. That would target both Fedora and Lubuntu well.

Releases in April/May would be good things for OpenSUSE and Debian.

> There will be no change in strings/translations, or UI.

If we have someone brave enough that has English as mother tongue I
would welcome a complete reread of the application, no specific end
date. Such a debate probably should go to lxde-i...@lists.sf.net though
before we change the strings. But still. Not a bad thing to do every now
and then.

Maybe ask people in the distribution i18n communities to help with this
if they have the time to do it?
Arch? Debian? Fedora? Lubuntu? OpenSUSE?

Yes. Future. Is good.

I can not comment on the technology choices at all. I will not do the
actual code in any case.

The major parts for me is the following.

1. Use branches to test things.
2. Release often
3. Release early
4. Fix bugs
5. Try to stick to a plan

We are short on man power I know and there are a very broad interest in
what we do. Having plans and having development cycle that make us more
interesting is in my mind important now. With releases that fixes bugs
in a timely manner we draw attention and by that developers and patches.
Yes it will be more geared towards reviewing patches in some cases but
that is not a bad thing. As we are now with everything depending one man
and his schedule the project is not very agile.

I hope I misread you now but if not I want to make it clear.

Do /NOT/ commit things that are not complete/do not work in the master
branch. Not even if it require a --enable-gtk-3 or whatever for configure.

We use git and have cheap branches, there are no reason at all to not
use them. When done hacking and it works as intended use the rebase
approach and get it into master.

If someone need assistance with working with please ask and I (or
whoever) will help you to master the repo.

I guess there should be both libfm and pcmanfm to be consistent.
When you are ready for release just ping me and I will sync the files at
the server and make call for string updates.

The sooner the better; release around Wednesday 27th of July should be
possible.

If you have the time it would be good if some release notes could be
prepared and posted to MLs before release. I am not a native English
speaker but I know there are some of them reading the lists and input on
grammar and spelling for these things are always welcome imho.
If you rather not do the RN I can try to fetch the important changes
since last release and provide them in some nice form.

[Lubuntu-desktop] LXDE Components without gtk3 support / release planning?

2011-06-30 Thread Martin Bagge / brother
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

crossposting like a maniac, sorry - I do not think lxde-list is working
yet...

We had a discussion yesterday night (CEST) on IRC regarding the shape of
LXDE components and when to release and stuff.

GTK3
Support for building for GTK3 is in place for most of the components but
not all. These should be the ones to look at.
* gtknetcat
* libfm
* lxappearance-obconf
* lxmenu-data
* lxmusic
* lxpanel
* lxpolkit

It might just need the correct build things and so on, I have really no
clue here - I am just the messenger.

Addendum:
Not related to the above we also talked briefly about doing releases of
the other components. I will put together a list of changes for the
components that we can work with to decide of a new release is needed
sooner or later for a specific component.
I told earlier that I am interested in doing l10n-only releases if
needed be, that will be one of the metrics in this.

For languages using standard numbers I can take care of this change. I
did something similar for a tab character bug in gpicview last night.
When we go into the release process the fuzzy string of 2010->2011 will
get treated too on the other hand.

I have been working on getting better shape of the server that hosts the
buildbot. I was thinking about adding a auto export at the end of each
successful build. The plan is also to get the code tree updates to
trigger builds (I do them by hand at the moment).

By doing this we could keep X number of builds for each component in
something like http://latest.lxde.bsnet.se/$COMPONENT/filename.tar.gz

I see this as a pro rather than a con. I do builds of git HEAD within 120

and when I am not away ofc). This is intended to be more automated but I
haven't really seen the absolute need.
As I am almost always part of adding new PO files I blame myself and fixes
the issues when I see them.

2. Some translation with bad quality becomes available before they're
well-tested.

This is always a problem and can also be part of long standing
translations that don't get proper reviews and such.

Current approach is very convenient, but later proven to be
problematic sometimes if there are some broken po files added to the
repo. So, should we change it? If we do change it, I hope that our
translation coordinator can help maintain the LINGUAS files for all
LXDE components to keep them up to date.
Any comments?

I rather not maitain a LINGUAS file. It was a PITA when we did that back
then. Some benefits but more administration.

released and these could have a minor point release.

I am not opposing a "translation only" release, planning for such a thing
might even bring attention to other things that need to get there. I am
not skilled enough to make these decisions - just tell me that we should
go to release and I handle the process.

Now an observation. In a constructive manner.
I see that Julien Lavergne is mostly the only one that has been working
on the apps but ideally, in a non technical opinion as I'm not a
programmer, I think that the master branch in git should be reserved for
bug fixes and pre-tested improvements.
Untested code (like these recent gtk3 compatibility commits that have
broken, for instance, lxpanel and lxterminal in a very basic way or
gpicview that has something that looks like a typo and makes it not even
compile) would be commited to another branch and then the commiter could
ask for testing in the mailing list.

The benefits for the workflow and for multiple contributions is evident.

Yes please, more testing and more contributions. I applaud.

I could make the buildbot produce the release tar files on successful
builds if that would benefit people. I probably have to find how to make
it build on updated git repos then. As it stands now I do the builds when
I have time to watch them/as often as I get a "build needed" message from
the Pootle server - a check is done every two hours during my "working
hours" (7-24 CEST).

Ideas and thoughts about the process to make things more lean is
appreciated. I am not a developer skilled enough to hack on the actual
source code but I am more than willing to dig in and do processes and
workflows and stuff like that. If I can do things in script it is even
better.

English is the base language, if you know another language better you can

As far as I see it the current git HEAD is not /released/. When that
happens a git tag will be produced and a tar ball distributed to sf.net
project pages. Until then pcman do not want to bump things as they might
change numerous times before the release is done. Using git HEAD as
source for a package in a distribution is not what pcman wants (and I
support this way).

I think the "old" saying "release early, release often" is key and
important. I do think we should aim for qualty too ofc but with frequent
updates it will be there and it will draw even more attention to the
product imho. I am with gilir on this one.
It also ties together with my notion of not using git HEAD to base
packages in distributions on, if there are frequent releases it is more
likely the distributions will use $LATEST_TAG rather than giot HEAD.
If needed be I am willing to set up a development model with branches
for this, this is what I do for a living anyhow (I don't think we do
need that though).

First impressions is that it works fine.
I've built and installed it at Debian Testing.

Three strings in libfm:sc/gtk/fm-side-pane.c was not translatable
rendering the menu thingie for the side pane (click "places" and you
should be able to select directory tree (or places if you already had the
tree showing))

line 49-51
{"Places", NULL, N_("Places"), NULL, NULL, FM_SP_PLACES},
{"DirTree", NULL, N_("Directory Tree"), NULL, NULL, FM_SP_DIR_TREE},
{"Remote", NULL, N_("Remote"), NULL, NULL, FM_SP_REMOTE},

I did translate these strings somewhere but they were not used in this
particular menu, the view menu works as intended. As well as the labeling.

Screenie:

Also!
It would be a good thing if some native speaker could check the
strings for both libfm and pcmanfm. I am not a native speaker and I
haven't read all the strings for a very long time but they probably can be
improved given that pcman isn't a native speaker either. If you know of
anyone being able to do this let them/me know.

Somewhere you have to draw the line for the feature package you want to
deliver in version X. One exception has been done already, when will the
next exception be dealt with?

The number of strings that needed to be added is about 30 ~ 40.

And that's alot.

This is quite important for usability.

And they should not be rushed.

Opinions from translators?
If you guys allow me to do so, I'll add them later and inform you on
the mailing list when I've done it.

I have no personal opinion in this. If Swedish is not done it's not done
and I do blame LXDE for bringing me untranslated software. In this case I
would be the translator and I will do what I can to do the translations
but I will most probably not have the time to do the appropriate changes.

Otherwise, I'll leave them in a git branch. But I'm a little bit worry
about git branch because it doesn't seem to work well with some
translation systems and there might be conflicts in the future.

I would guess that Transifex has no problem at all with them, but that's
my guess. Pootle will have no problem at all, that's for sure. I work on
master with that setup.

Can you elaborate on the problem that you have seen? If I can write
documentation to ease the work for people working with the translation I
would be happy to lend a hand.

If these new strings are not going to be added this time, I'll release
pcmanfm 0.9.5 in about two days.

Hmmm, I’d prefer 0.9.5 out as soon as possible and the tool tips added to
the next version. This would gives us a reasonably bug free version for
Lubuntu.

I concur. This change is not that great and will not change to much of the
experience any way.

Do a point release with the new strings and do not rush things at this
time.
