Mensaje original Asunto: [lubuntu newsletter] lubuntu 10.10 releasedFecha: Wed, 30 Nov 2011 04:12:57 + De: lubuntu lubu...@lxde.org lubu...@lxde.org LUBUNTU 10.10 RELEASED -- Taipei/Berlin/Paris, Oct. 10, 2010: Following intensive development Julien Lavergne, developement lead of lubuntu, announced version 10.10 of the lightweight desktop on October 10, 2010. lubuntu is a faster, more lightweight and energy saving Ubuntu variant using LXDE, the Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment. It includes a special selection of light applications combining easy usability and performance. lubuntu is targeted at normal PC users running on low-spec hardware. Improvements of the latest lubuntu version include autologin support in ubiquity, support of install only mode in ubiquity, support for lubuntu-restricted package in ubiquity. lubuntu 10.10 comes with a completely new theme by Rafael Laguna. Lxpanel now supports Ubuntu indicators applets. Added applications and tools are Update-notifier, to get notification for available updates, Xpad, to create quick notes and Ace-of-penguins, to provide some games. Parcellite, which is not maintained upstream, was removed and Pyneighborhood was replaced by gvfs support of pcmanfm. LXtask replaces Xfce4-taskmanager for tasks monitoring. Evince is now used for reading PDF. During new installations a slideshow now describes features of the system. Minimum requirements for lubuntu are comparable to Pentium II or Celeron systems with a 128 Mb RAM configuration, which may yield a slow yet usable system with lubuntu. lubuntu features lightweight design work, faster boot speed and a smart choice of applications aimed at keeping resource usage low. The standard web browser is Chromium, the open-source version of Google Chrome. Besides speed the lubuntu team aims to offer the best possible compromise for new users offering easy to use application. While lubuntu is developed with the end user in mind, its lightweight approach also makes it attractive to corporate users focusing on faster completion of tasks. Applications included are Sylpheed as e-mail client, Openbox as window manager, the file manager PCManFM, GPicView Image Viewer, Transmission for Bittorrent, Gnumeric for spreadsheets and Abiword for word processing. A new meta-package (lubuntu-core) is available to install only core packages of Lubuntu. A new meta-package (lubuntu-restricted-extras) is available to install restricted packages for Lubuntu (such as flash, java and extra codecs for chromium). Additional applications are available through the packaging installation system Synaptic from Ubuntu repositories. Features of lubuntu 10.10: * Faster boot speed through integration of lxdm, LXDE display manager * Low usage of system resources through Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment * Lower energy-consumption * Access to software repository through Synaptic software manager Images for press use are available onhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Marketing Availability lubuntu 10.10 is entirely free of charge available for download fromhttp://lubuntu.net. Started by Hong Yen Jee known under his nick name PCMan, in Taiwan in 2005, LXDE is today maintained by an international community of developers. It comes with a beautiful interface, multi-language support, standard keyboard short cuts and additional features like tabbed file browsing. LXDE uses less CPU and less RAM than other environments. It is especially designed for cloud computers with low hardware specifications, such as, netbooks, mobile devices (e.g. MIDs) or older computers. LXDE can be installed with many Linux distributions. It is the standard for Knoppix and lubuntu and it also runs with BSD. LXDE provides a fast desktop experience; connecting easily with applications in the cloud and supporting a wealth of programs that can be installed locally with Linux systems. The source code of LXDE is licensed partly under the terms of the the General Public License and partly under the LGPL. The website can be accessed under http://lxde.org. Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Some considerations about the Precise theme
You're right. Dark themes are battery savers, but if they're too dark it cause fuzzy eyes. Too much light cause eye fatigue. That's why the Oneiric wall is not as light as older ones, but still light blue. And there're lots of reasons to be blue. First is corporative. Second is usability and eye-friendly (and allows hours and hours of fun :D ). You can check this: http://books.google.com/books/about/Art_and_visual_perception.html?id=9RktoatXGQ0C if you want more reasons about what I'm doing for every pixel I design. It's not just aesthetics. Design means usability. That's why I like window and menu shadows, they improve visibility and gives attention to the first plane on screen. I know, I know, it's boring. But look, Suse is green. I think it's a mistake associate green (as leaf or nature colour) with energy efficiency. You can make black thing and keep efficient. Also, PUD Linux and Vector are green now. Even some people asked me about including yellow wallpapers because it's warm. You know it cannot fit for everybody. So going more neutral this time, as neutral as you'll can use any wallpaper and still looking good with unsaturated (gray) panels and windows. http://lubuntublog.blogspot.com/ http://www.lubuntu.net/ 2011/11/18 Josh Embrey thelastorph...@gmail.com In regards to going lighter with Lubuntu, we must remember our key targets and goal. I switched my GTK and Openbox themes to dark themes and it added another 40 minutes to my netbook's battery when on full brightness, over an hour with minimal brightness. I took every step to ensure that it was just the colors changing that changed the battery life. Being LXDE aims at having a minimal footprint, using dark themes helps minimize power consumption, continuing with the goal. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop Post to : lubuntu-desktop@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp b1.pngb2.pngb3.png___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop Post to : lubuntu-desktop@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

The upgrade path for non-PAE users will be the PAE kernel. Those CPUs that do not have i686 and PAE support will be orphaned. To the best of my knowledge, these include Intel CPUs prior to Pentium II, 400Mhz Pentium M, VIA C3, and Geode LX. As far as I know, there are no laptop or desktop class CPUs being produced that do not meet these minimum requirements. Before I do something that is difficult to revert, I would like to hear from the development community why we should continue to maintain a kernel flavour that is (in my opinion) getting increasingly low utilization. It is my feeling that an extremely high percentage of users of the non-PAE kernel have a CPU that is PAE capable. If there is sufficient community demand (and support), I would be willing to sponsor the first non-PAE kernel upload to Universe. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/Specs/PreciseKernelConfigReview We'll be conducting a similar survey for powerpc. rtg P.S. Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] logo
Of course I'm serious. My priorities, right now, are achieving a perfect integration with Ubuntu in almost all aspects of Lubuntu identity, including brand marks, colour specs, design lines, advertising (if any), social networks presence, etc. Also, a good entrance, such as a good website is, could do the downloading process more easy for end-users. In case of Lubuntu Team, that's not me, is Canonical who adverted that we must be close to them (you can check the design LInes published at design.canonical.com). All of this makes TOO a good distro, not only the code. And I must be clear about I'm not deprecating the coder's work, but you must admit that design is always the last everybody think in for everything, and that's a big mistake. Ok, an icon is a tiny thing, but I'm trying to make the Lubuntu image rock solid and homogeneous for three years, with not too much success, I must to say. -- Go to rafaellaguna.com Go to Lubuntu.net attachment: b3.pngattachment: b2.pngattachment: b1.png___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop Post to : lubuntu-desktop@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] logo
That's right, this is the right place for discussions about the distro. And I dont want anybody be angry of my words (in fact, it was a bit a joke for Mario). But I'm still thinking that we must be stronger and graphic design or advertising are powerful tools for that purpose. And, I'd like to use this mailing thread to anounce a few things I've got in mind, and I need your opinion. - a design / graphics / publishing line cheat is under development (like Kubuntu or Ubuntu's) for those things like signatures, wallpapers, stickers, and other things that doesn't really fit in marketing (or maybe yes) and make it distributable for you all (this includes presentation templates, mail signatures, etc). - a lubuntu.net mockup is almost ready, but I don't really know if we can change that. And that's not all, the idea for this is providing a nice set of mirrors, or at least, being more concrete about where and what to download. A lot of users were confused. That's all, for the moment. Yes, I'm fully agree. Not only coders are important making operating systems. [Lubuntu-desktop] ozone2 update
Hi, crew. First update for Ozone2. I've corrected a few bugs you observed and another one discovered by myself :) Here's the short list of changes: * gtk2: set progressbar animation to false (not really, progress bars are drawn plain) * gtk2: increased pcmanfm statusbar text size in 2 pixels * gtk3: using Unico engine instead standard (this is experimental, look hasn't changed) * gtk3: solved pink container frames (due to new engine Unico) * panel: smooth light contrast lines There was a n update from Canonical: they updated Unico engine up to version r79. Warning on this if you're testing Ozone2 in Natty, because it's only available on Oneiric repos! Maybe you've already updated this within the last package upgrade if you use Oneiric Alpha 2. Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] gtk2 gtk3 theme
Ok, things to do: - (GTK2) Set progressbar animation to FALSE - (GTK2) Increase statusbar text size in 1 or 2 pixels. - (GTK3) Check pink container frames About this last thing, it happened to since last Murrine update, and all themes work fine except Elementary and Ozone. If it keeps going like that I'm thinking about migrating to Unico engine. But this means lots of visual changes. Thanks a lot for this. Anybody has similar problems only on File-Roller and Evolution? Ok, Lubuntu theme is not designed for Gnome apps, but it's unthinkable to have 3rd party apps ugly while Lubuntu ones are fine. -- Go to rafaellaguna.com Go to Lubuntu.net attachment: b3.pngattachment: b2.pngattachment: b1.png___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop Post to : lubuntu-desktop@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] gtk2 gtk3 theme
Today's not my day. Ozone2 is using ONLY the gtk3 standard engine, just like Adwaita does. I was thinking if my error was given by an interaction between conflictive gtk2 and 3 libraries, but I don,t think it,s pissible. Using Unico will make Ozone look like Radiance. Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] LXDM Theme
I know. My computer isn't so high-level :) but it's not an old hardware and I enjoy the speed of Lubuntu. But we have to keep in mind that Lubuntu is designed for working in old hardware as well as new, that's the goal. Even you will notice the difference between Lubuntu and the standard Ubuntu desktop. So, getting it more overbloated is not an option. That's why we're searching (always) for new ways to speed up the system (and, if necessary, replacing a default application). Glad you enjoy Lubuntu. Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] lubuntu-{desktop, core} versus lxde-{common, core}
Interesting question, but it's some kind asking about the differences bewteen Ubuntu and Gnome itslef. Not only the community is behind the environment. Think in Lubuntu as an harmonic implementation of the LXDE environment over the Ubuntu repositories with a lot of added values, like a better integration components (dedicated applets), better oriented applications (with the handy way of having the best performance and the minimum installation size), the artwork (that makes the working day after day easy with your computer), the little (and most invisible) customizations here and there (login, session, panels, desktop, file manager, etc). And as you commented, you have a great community supporting this. But true, you can always install a minimal Ubuntu (or Debian) core and start installing app after app until your computer becomes usable. We're doing that job for you. And I'm sure that others, coders specially, would give you more reasons than these explained by me and my own unknowledge of the Linux systems. Ok, by parts. 1. I'll study the possibilities of customizing xscreensaver. If we can do more Lubuntu-ish that will be great. 2. Yes, Fedora used to include some sparkling soda wallpapers in older distributions, I think the character was more comic-like drawing (bold style). Obviously I'm working on variations, this one was only a finished mockup (not the first one, just the finished). Maybe another one will change in colour or even in shape. But anyway, I don't think they're the same. Maybe I'm wrong. 3. I can sure my Empathy (not included in Lubuntu, BTW) and Evince looks Like the theme specified in LXAppearance. In my computer and in other ones I've checked. If you're talking about the Empathy themes itslef it's not the same (the GUI in Evince is the minimum expression of a Glade interface, it's a simple GTK app, it must obey the daemon). 4. Thanks for your kind words :) We're working on it, on making everything fast and light, but some things we cannot control gone wild. For example, the new kernel, 3.0, seems to be faster. I'm tetsing right now and I'm very surprised about its speed. But I'm not sure if this is the reason. Also, the programs evolution sometimes get bigger (and their libraries), that's why we change sometimes an application by default. http://lubuntublog.blogspot.com/ http://www.lubuntu.net/ 2011/6/21 Jean-Pierre Vidal Piesset jpx...@gmail.com Devs: Recently installed 11.04 and i'm surprised by the RAM and CPU% consumed by Lubuntu in this release (I was keeping my main machine with 10.04 but decided to change to be able to help a little more). Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Missing configuration programs
Hi there! I suggest to do some changes to Lubuntu, just adding some shortcuts to Openbox and installing a couple of apps. I've taken these instructions from the great Urukrama's Openbox web. 1. First of all we need to install amixer. Then we can set up / down / mute volume level with the following commands: up: amixer -q set Master 1+ unmute down:amixer -q set Master 1- unmute mute:amixer -q set Master toggle 2. As there's no on-screen indicator, we need to load OSDsh at startup (/etc/xdg/lxsession/Lubuntu/autostart): osdsh (sleep 1 osdctl -m 1) This app is themeable (I could do a matching theme for it). I had an issue because OSDsh tries to access /dev/mixer that doesn't exist in Natty based distros, and I don't know how to configure for the new dev place. Dependencies of each package: osdsh needs libapm1 libxosd2 (83 kb total size) amixer is in package alsa-utils (1121 kb size, already included) -- Go to rafaellaguna.com Go to Lubuntu.net attachment: b3.pngattachment: b2.pngattachment: b1.png___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop Post to : lubuntu-desktop@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Proposed changes to lubuntu-desktop
I've tested every PDF reader and Evince is the only one that does not distort truetype edges. The respective developments for MuPDF and XPdf are a bit paused and, as PCMan said, usability increases due to the user popularity, so it's easy making changes. Evince isn't as resource hungry as we can expect, and its dependencies are small. I'd like to remember all graphickers, photographers and people who use compliant PDFs that the libraries used by xPDF and others are deprecated. Evince uses a new version of Poppler already tested, now used by Okular and ePDFViewer (who was candidate for a release of Lubuntu and rejected due to rendering reasons). I think the actual selection of Lubuntu's included software is near perfection. Of, but of course. Let me clarify myself, and I'll send to you my sketch. It's not really working at all in some widgets. And I need a binary for The Widget Factory. Testing it live is very annoying. Thanks a lot, I'll keep in touch with you, Chris. -- attachment: b3.pngattachment: b2.pngattachment: b1.png___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop Post to : lubuntu-desktop@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] LXDE plans and priorities
It seems that GTK3 transition is a headache for everybody. Changing themes for the LXDE appliance is one of my challenges. But I'd like to know if changing some libraries would change graphic applications too. I mean, these are some requests I've found in the forums. - lxshortcut themeable via CSS / GTK3 (some kinda Unity reading current themes) - lxpanel whole bitmaps processing (for enabling real bars matching screen resolution) - re-definitions for pcmanfm (tree / bookmarks panel specific, like Nautilus Elementary) - a global theme package manager for the LXDE desktop environment (maybe script guided) - oh, and trash, also demanded, and already made in OpenSuSE They all are just question, that may be solved or implemented, if the environment goes in this direction. Or maybe I'm wrong and they're not important. I don't know. Again, it depends on coders' preferences. Thanks a lot. -- attachment: b3.pngattachment: b2.pngattachment: b1.png___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop Post to : lubuntu-desktop@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] LXDE plans and priorities
BTW, wrong data. The trash is implemented via patch on Slackware, not OpenSuSE. This one is using the first patches. Here is the information (and downloadable patches with .diff files): http://submax.altervista.org/index.php?link=lxde/info.html Thank you. -- attachment: b3.pngattachment: b2.pngattachment: b1.png___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop Post to : lubuntu-desktop@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

I can confirm this, after reading from header to footer the GTK.org web. [Lubuntu-desktop] disk space need
As said on the blog: I can't upgrade my netbook Positivo MOBO (hard drive 2gb only) with lubuntu 10.04 because new versions need more a lot of space (1,5gb 3,2gb). Why? Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Audio players - some thoughts RFC
And no, you're right, this is NOT a democracy. I mean, the audio player has its own discussion (where everybody in this list voted their suggestion). But there's one thing we cannot forget, the technical details about RAM consumption, the space needed in the ISO, the license of the included product in a third party release, the update schedule and availability of packages, etc. Believe when I tell that the coordinator of this project, Julien, is doing the best for keeping Lubuntu as efficient and attractive as possible. And I think we could demonstrate some empathy and trust for him. -- attachment: b3.pngattachment: b2.pngattachment: b1.png___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop Post to : lubuntu-desktop@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Alpha 3 intitial test and some problems.
It would be gorgeous if GTP themes were compatible. But this means the authors must include an Openbox folder within. But I think that we, LXDE users, are less important than others (and not talk about WindowMaker, FVWM-Crystal, etc). -- attachment: b3.pngattachment: b2.pngattachment: b1.png___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop Post to : lubuntu-desktop@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Alpha 3 intitial test and some problems.
Just a question. In Gnome you can specify fonts in themes. In fact, when you choose one of those, Appearance-Properties asks you for changing that (like the suggestion of a wallpaper). * The first thing I want to do is check about specifying fonts with the murrine engine (so Ozone can use it globaly) * The second one is for PCMan: Could LXAppearance suggest that? I know that this requieres the existence of theme packages (or something like that) to change all with a single clic. What do you think? -- attachment: b3.pngattachment: b2.pngattachment: b1.png___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop Post to : lubuntu-desktop@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
