Drawbacks:
1. Poor video playback from YouTube videos
2. "window tearing" when moving a window about on screen.

Advantage:
1. It works :)

Hi Walter,

Thanks to your reply, I am much more familiar with cvt and xrandr. I used
them to create a higher resolution mode but when I tried to activate it

OK, I'm not familiar with this sort of thing. How do I change the installed
system to match the live system? Is it only kernel module settings or other
things as well? I've never had to change a kernel module's settings before).

Also, is there anything else I should read as background material?

[lubuntu-users] SiS Graphics problems - lubuntu 18.04.3 LTS 32-bit

2020-01-29 Thread Ian Bruntlett
Hi,

When I boot from installation media, Lubuntu appears with a screen
resolution of 1280 x 1024 and a Refresh rate of 0.00. Other resolutions
(1024 x 768, 800 x 600, 640 x 480) are available.

When I boot from hard drive which was set up from the aforementioned
installation media, Lubuntu appears with a screen resolution of 640 x 480
and a Refresh rate of 73.00. Other resolutions are not available.

I would like to increase the resolution. I've tried going into Preferences
-> Monitor Settings but only a resolution of 640 x 480 is available.

Other details:
Elonex ProSentia Tower PC.
AMD Athlon XP3000+ 2.17GHz
RAM: 2GiB, some shared with graphics
ASUSTek motherboard with onboard graphics
VGA Controller: SiS 661/741/760 PCI/AGP or 662/761Gx/ PCIe VGADisplay
Adapter
Graphics kernel module: sis_agp

Any ideas? I can provide more details on request.

TIA,

Ian

Re: [lubuntu-users] new software needs testing

2019-08-21 Thread Ian Bruntlett
Hi,

Did more testing
* System pauses a lot after typing password in at login. Maybe there should
be a "Password OK" message?
* Firefox - Watched & made notes whilst viewing YouTube video OK - "Bad
ass: Making Users Awesome" (Kathy Sierra).
* Could not find equivalent of "Software Updater" - looked in "Muon Package
Manager", did a check for updates & it listed too much - it included stuff
about "Not installed software".
* Accessories->Compton slowed down the GUI. Am not a fan of windows or
menus fading in/out
* Leave->Shutdown "Do you want to really switch off your computer?" even
when no applications are running.

Walter - thank you for the testing instructions.

*Using this hardware:*Dell Inspiron 530 - franklin (for 64-bit Lubuntu
testing)
Intel Core 2 6600, 2.4GHz, 64-bit; 2GiB RAM, 466GiB hard drive, DVD RW
optical drive, Ethernet connection

*Using this software*4ef27debaa7342df727e80b41c71739b
*eoan-desktop-amd64.iso

This is a full-blooded install of lubuntu 19.10 onto bare-metal hardware,
running from internal hard drive.

*Summary*Did all that was asked of me. System works with a few quirks.

*Install experiences** Chose "manual install" (it had a previous install on
it)
* When the installer showed what the 'before' and 'after' hard drive
partitioning would look like, they were identical. Which is strange but the
install worked

*Login screen*Before any key is pressed, the screen shows that keyboard
layout is 'US'. As soon as I started typing a password, the layout would be
displayed correctly as a British keyboard.

Not sure what to test for - not having experimented with graphics much.

Tried Accessories -> Compton. Hard drive whirred for a while. Nothing else.

As per instructions, installed new compton from ppa:wxl. No problem.
Rebooted and used system to install SuperTux. No problem

Used provided share.riseup.net URL to download sddm-config-editor. Did a
chmod +x on it and ran it directly from ~/Downloads directory. Wasn't sure
what to test so decided on setting "General->Initial NumLock state" to
"on". Quit it. Ran it again - "General->Initial NumLock state" was still
"None". Rebooted. Noticed that "NumLock" is ON but sddm-config-editor does
not reflect this.

*By the way...*Lubuntu looking and running better than before. Well done!

Hi Basil,

I hope I've understood your problem correctly...

When faced with problems like this, I import the image into LibreOffice
Draw, set the page to Portrait / Landscape, resize the image appropriately,
and print it from there.

To set the page to Portrait or Landscape, load LO Draw and go Format ->
Page Properties and then choose the appropriate Portrait / Landscape radio
button.

The above approach is used in a charity, Contact, that I volunteer in and
works for me :)

I had a dig around and found a 2GiB SO-DIMM, fitted it this evening - and
ran memtest86+ with no errors.

Did some testing of LibreOffice. Basically, it is a Java problem. If I go
to Tools -> Advanced in, say, LibreOffice Calc, I can disable the use of a
JDK and once that it set, LibreOffice Writer starts working again.

Thanks for the CEX tip. Looked at the website and it was very interesting.

I got this advice:
*First, start Libreoffice, click on Tools, click on options and under
Libreoffice section click on Advanced. Deselect "Use a Java runtime
environment"* and problem solved.

BTW, I am running 32-bit lubuntu on a 64-bit system (Toshiba NB250-107
Netbook), due to lack of memory (only 1GiB).

I think the problem might be due to the use of a 32-bit system. Maybe the
32-bit Java Runtime Environment is buggy? Because I can run LO Writer fine
on a ThinkPad T420 (64 bit CPU, 64-bit Ubuntu).

[lubuntu-users] Activating a swap partition

2018-11-24 Thread Ian Bruntlett
Hi,

On behalf of the Computer Wombling Project I am refurbishing a donated
Toshiba NB250-107 netbook. It has a 64-bit CPU and 1GiB RAM. Because of
that I installed 32-bit Lubuntu 18.04.1. Whenever I try to open a (small)
document with LibreOffice Writer, the hard drive whirs a bit, some of the
LibreOffice window appears... and then LibreOffice closes.

I think it is running out of memory. I've put a 2GiB partition on the hard
drive but that does not seem to be used. Here is the output of the swapon
--summary command:-

FilenameTypeSizeUsedPriority
/dev/sda1 partition19988440-2

Re: [lubuntu-users] [lubuntu-devel] lubuntu 32-bit 18.10

2018-10-28 Thread Ian Bruntlett
Hi Walter,

Doing my best to reduce the workload of the bug fixers...

Yesterday I printed and studied the notes you recommended. There was a typo
in the notes, however, it contained a link written as "How to Write Bugs
Effectively". It should read "How to Report Bugs Effectively". As an on and
off programmer, I have never needed a guide to introducing bugs :)

This evening I downloaded and installed the 18.10 32-bit release of lubuntu
via USB flash drive:-
38e0bf05b6bfc3faa700f779e94cc1b7 lubuntu-18.10-desktop-i386.iso

*In a nutshell:*
I don't think it is a calamares bug - from what I understand, calamares is
the installer.
The problem is something to do with window management. When a window is
created, whatever is creating the window does not take into account that
the taskbar takes up vertical pixels. The result is that you sometimes end
up with some windows that have some of their contents hidden by the taskbar.

*Hardware details:*
Samsung NC10 Netbook, hostname: hawking
Intel Atom N270, 1.66GHz, 32-bit, 2GiB RAM, 149.05 GiB hard drive, no
optical drive, Ethernet and WiFi connections, lubuntu typically installed
via USB flashdrive
https://gist.github.com/21b61903871ee685fc79
Screen dimensions: 1024 x 600 pixels, 270 x 158mm
Resolution: 96 x 96 dots per inch

*Notes from this evening's install of 18.10*
Installing from USB flash drive onto netbook.
The "Welcome to the lubuntu installer" window's buttons - e.g. "Next" &
"Cancel" are obscured by the taskbar. Maximising this window not only fixes
the problem for this screen but for quite a few following screens (that is
"Location","Keyboard", "Partitions","Partitioning").
When I chose to edit a partition, the resulting subwindow had to be
maximised for me to see the "OK" and "Cancel" buttons which appeared to be
obscured by the taskbar.

*Conclusion*
I don't know whether this is a window manager (openbox) issue or if it is a
problem with the display manager (sddm). What do you think?

BW,

Ian

How do I go about filing a bug against calamares?
I always do tests on bare metal. I'm sure there's a joke hiding in that

[lubuntu-users] Qt Games

2018-10-15 Thread Ian Bruntlett
Hi All,

In a previous conversation discussing LxQt, I complained that there was
only one entry in the Games menu for Lubuntu.

In my wanderings I found https://wiki.qt.io/Qt_Based_Games which in turn
took me to https://www.linux-games.org/

It isn't a perfect catalogue. Have a play with them, if you feel inclined.
Let people know if you find something that should be on the install iso or
maybe referred to in a meta-package to conveniently install a bunch of
games.

Re: [lubuntu-users] About scanning for and turning wifi on/off

Hi All,

About disabling wifi.

1. A friend of mine has a Dell laptop with a Wifi on/off slider switch on
the side. Every so often, she would unknowingly brush the switch and WiFi
would stop working.

2. The BIOS screen may have an option to enable/disable WiFi.

I was particularly interested in the clause:
"Lubuntu will create and maintain complete documentation which will be
included by default in the operating system, and can guide anyone from
beginner to expert on how to use Lubuntu to its full potential and
contribute to the further development of it."

I've been running a computer refurbishment scheme for over 10 years now,
and lubuntu has been a big part of that. I take in old computers, refurbish
them and they are given away to people with mental health problems or their
families. Initially I taught people how to use things on a 1:1 basis. Then
I created an illustrated guide to using lubuntu - 7 pages crucial, the
other 7 pages in case they are needed. It gets provided as both paper and
PDF copies.

So, when a refurbished computer is passed on, I put on the Desktop 1) a
folder of the PDFs available from the LibreOffice site 2) GIMP user guide
from the GIMP website and 3) a PDF of my illustrated guide/

There are some other works out there than might be worth considering for
inclusion:-

And the GNU manuals can be found online here:-

Just thought I'd inform the mailing list as well.

*Tested this iso:*
$ md5sum bionic-desktop-amd64.iso

*On this hardware:*
Dell Dimension E520 - joliet-curie.
Intel Core 2 (6300), 1.86GHz, 64-bit, 3GiB RAM, 160GB hard drive, DVD RW
drive, Ethernet connection.
Printer - HP LaserJet M1132MFP (Laser Printer / Scanner).

The OS behaved fine. Installed and ran LibreOffice (just Writer) and GIMP
OK.

Printing and scanning took a bit of effort but worked in the end:-

Ran sudo hp-setup from the terminal to install my HP LaserJet M1132MFP
(Laser Printer / Scanner). hp-setup complained about missing packages
(PyQt4 and PyQt5). Used Synaptic Package Manager to install python3-pyqt4,
python-pyqt5 and python3-pyqt5. Re-ran hp-setup. Rebooted and was able to
print and scan an image.

*I've logged the results* on

I have one 32-bit lubuntu system - a Samsung NC10 Netbook - still in
"serious" use and am able to test future isos when needed - if there is
something 32-bit and important that you want it tested, if you don't mind
sending me an email I'll do my best to test it for you.

For 18.04, I was concentrating on Ubuntu 64-bit because of a problem with
the HPLIP drivers recognising my HP LaserJet printer but not its built-in
scanner (I use both Ubuntu and Lubuntu).

I've also been busy working/experimenting on a friend's Lubuntu system,
getting audio-video working on her laptop using Cheese.

I did try experimenting with lubuntu LXQt.

[lubuntu-users] Tower PC, lubuntu and Qt

2018-06-30 Thread Ian Bruntlett
Hi,

I have a tower PC that I had refurbished for a friend who turned out not to
have enough room for it in her new flat.

So it is knocking around, not doing much. Thought it might be interesting
to try LxQt - is it still called that or is it now officially Lubuntu Next?

I've done some Googling, done some askubuntu.com searches and am still not
100% sure how to go about installing LxQt. Suggestions, anyone?

Thanks :)

The Linux Kernel has a Ring buffer of messages.

To see it, try this command:-
dmesg | less

To find out more about that command try:
man dmesg

Any help?

1. A friend that benefited on a refurbished laptop from the Computer
Wombling Scheme had a sound problem. It was fixed by clicking on the
loudspeaker icon on the bottom right of the screen and selecting "unmute"
(IIRC).

2. Ensure the PulseAudio package is installed.

3. Check the kernel log. I use the dmesg command for that. Not sure how
comfortable you are with that. You could try this command. (You can change
the word sound for more relevant search terms):-
dmesg | grep -i -A 4 sound

That runs the command dmesg which outputs the kernel ring buffer and sends
it to the grep command. I use the -i parameter to make the search
case-insensitive and the -A 4 parameter to print 4 lines per successful
search.

I've looked up the appropriate journal that describes what I did to get
debugging info sent to launchpad for the bug where 80% of the screen is
black and you are unable to use apport because of that...

On the computer with the graphics problem I did this:-
apport-cli -f -p linux --save 32-bit-graphics.apport
The above command gathered debugging information and put it in the file
32-bit-graphics.apport
I then copied that file to USB flash drive and copied it to a computer to
report it.

On the working computer I did this:-
ubuntu-bug -c 32-bit-graphics.apport

Apologies if this information is at a bit of a tangent. My motive is to get
this information out into the open.

I think apport needs a working GUI. When I was gathering information to
report a device driver bug, I had to use the apport-cli command to generate
the debugging information, copy that information to a working computer and
then submit a bug report that way. Sadly, I can't remember which command I
used for that.

Thanks for that. This is what I saw (amongst other things):-
DEBUG: retrieving nic-firmware 1.157.13
Cannot write to /var/cache/anna/nic-firmware_1.157.13_all.udeb (No such
file or directory)

The hard drive had been recently wiped - not even the partition table
remained. This was why I said I could not run apport. Maybe it is
worthwhile coming up with an apport live CD? One idea I had was to use a
GPartEd Live CD to create a partition table and a swap partition and then
try to run the install.

I _think_ the installer ran out of memory. I have a second system to work
on some time and will see if I can find out more.

[lubuntu-users] netboot failing to install

2017-11-25 Thread Ian Bruntlett
Hi,

When I try to install the netboot disc for Ubuntu/lubuntu 16.04 LTS 32-bit
on CD-R, I have a problem.

When the computer is "Loading additional components" I get the error
message:-
"The installer failed to install a file from the mirror". I *suspect* the
missing file is "nic-firmware" and I have tried these three mirrors:-
archive.ubuntu.com
gb.archive.ubntu.com
fr.archive.ubuntu.com

Should I get a bug number for this bug? Obviously I can't run one of the
apport commands so if you can point out a web page with relevant help would
be really appreciated :)

On a system I refurbished recently, memtest86+ passed and dban failed. I
booted into a live CD, queried smartctl and was told everything was OK.
After some research I was told that modern hard drives tend to fail
suddenly.

I removed the hard drive, put a replacement in, installed lubuntu on it and
then used it on and off for a while as my final testing. It has now been
given to its new home.

Just running one test, especially the free as in beer Memtest release

I agree - to a point - I have found memtest86+ to be useful - as the first
part of a testing process.

When I answered the previous question with info to run memtest86+, I was
not advocating _only_ running memtest86+, just that I believed it would be
helpful to run the test and that the questioner would be able to get back
to this list with the results and then people (such as yourself) could
offer further advice.

Given personal experience of refurbishing computers for the Contact
Computer Wombling/Refurbishing Project, I have found that when a computer
I'm working on fails to run memtest86+ , that computer is not reliable
enough for normal use. After a memtest86+ test has been passed, I wipe the
hard drive using dban. If that fails, it is a strong indication that I'm
going to have to change the hard drive.

One thing to do is check for memory problems.

With lubuntu already installed,
* Switch computer on
* Press and hold down both SHIFT keys
* You should get a black and white menu.
* Use the down arrow key to select "Memory test (memtest86+)
* Press ENTER
* You should get a blue and white screen and the computer will start
testing memory
* If you get any error from the memory testing, you need to get someone to
help you with your hardware

Re: [lubuntu-users] [lubuntu-devel] Help! I can't report bugs

2017-10-18 Thread Ian Bruntlett
Hi Simon et al,

Discovered there is a way to report a bug when the test system is awkward:-

Also, because of screen problems, I might have written the filename as
32-bit-graphics-apport

apport-cli -f -p linux --save 32-bit-graphics.apport # this gathers
debugging info and saves it as a text file

Then you copy the above created file ("32-bit-graphics.apport") to a USB
flash drive and copy it to a computer in order to file a bug, using this
command:-
ubuntu-bug -c 32-bit-graphics.apport # this takes the debugging info copied
from the other system and passes it on to bugs.launchpad

After doing some processing, it opened a page on Firefox. Logged in as
usual, typed in some extra info about the bug. The bug was then filed OK.

Bug #1724639

I've added an attachment with a photo of the display corruption.

[lubuntu-users] Help! I can't report bugs

2017-10-16 Thread Ian Bruntlett
Hi,

Yesterday I received from qatrac...@stgraber.org a notification of a new
release and that I can get it from here:-
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/383/builds/158971/testcases

I downloaded the iso, created install media on a USB flash drive and ran
into a graphics device driver problem. I reported the problem on
lubuntu-devel and got no reply.

I have tried logging in to Ubuntu One / Launch Pad and that works OK. I can
find info on how to report bugs - everything seems to be about using
apport. Given that I am having hardware problems, running apport usefully
is out of the question.

So, I have a question for you:- How do I report the bug I found? I can find
web pages that discuss bugs but the actual way to report bugs is completely
overlooked.

TIA,

Ian

Yes, I tested it on Wednesday night. I immediately found a graphics
problem, running on a Samsung NC10 Netbook (32-bit). Whenever there is a
new lubuntu iso made available for testing, I always test it out. I
reported the problem to this (and other) mailing lists. I even have a list
of checks I perform on new isos.

On Thursday, I performed more tests, with a view to helping anyone trying
to fix the problem. At the end I took some rather blurry photos of the
graphics problem and emailed them to the lubuntu-devel mailing list.

This is the first time I have experienced it.

I always test pre-release isos when asked on lubuntu-devel on this
particular netbook (Samsung NC10, 'hawking') so it is probably safe to say
this is a new problem.

The graphics PCI devices are:-
VGA compatible controller : Intel Corporation Mobile 945GSE Express
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Display controller : Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML
Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Here is what I believe might be going on:-

There is a graphics issue. I think the kernel parameters "splash quiet"
somehow result in the graphics subsystem is somehow put into the wrong
mode, resulting in the wrong piece of memory being used for part of the
display, resulting in 80% of the screen being junk and 20% of the screen
being perfect.

It appears that booting from being switched off completely, with the kernel
parameters "quiet splash" removed, prevents the problem from happening in
the first place.

Still testing! Booted system again. When Samsung BIOS screen appeared
again, pressed down both SHIFT keys. Used GRUB to edit the parameters to be
passed to the kernel - removed the parameters 'quiet' and 'splash'. System
booted, with plenty of text messages (as expected). As the system continued
booting, there was _no_ screen corruption. I logged in OK and am about to
perform other tests.

Hi Simon,

Downloaded this iso - artful-alternate-i386.iso - and put on a USB flash
drive. Checked its integrity
ba4544fa8728c195505660e6980e7123 artful-alternate-i386.iso

Installed it on this hardware with no errors:-

Samsung NC10 Netbook - hawking
Intel Atom N270, 1.66GHz, 32-bit, 2GiB RAM, 149.05 GiB hard drive, no
optical drive, Ethernet and WiFi connections, lubuntu typically installed
via USB flashdrive
https://gist.github.com/21b61903871ee685fc79

Rebooted. When booting, I saw a dark blue screen with a smear of white
pixels on it. Eventually reached the login screen. Unable to login because
of junk on screen. 80% of the left hand side of the screen was black with
two smears of pixels - one white, one blue. The remaining 20% of the screen
on the right hand side was OK.

Because of the junk on screen I was unable to login and perform further
tests.

Is there a launchpad page you'd like me to put this information on?

Try searching for a local Linux User Group (LUG). Because they will have
the advantage of being able to look at your problem and do the technical

Using personal test list, "Lubuntu - Additional things to test for".

I've attached my personal test list as a PDF, in case someone is interested.

Hi Fritz,

I'm not sure I understand your question but I'll try to answer it.

In particular http://clonezilla.org/ might be of interest to you. I haven't
tested it though,

There are some Linux "live" disks available that might be of interest to
you and I have links to them on this web page:-
https://sites.google.com/site/ianbruntlett/home/free-software

For backing up personal files, I use a shell script that invokes tar. I
then copy the resulting tar files to an external flash drive using the
standard file manager.

Re: [lubuntu-users] Using Pentium 3 Machines on Lubuntu--posting from "the top"--ode to PPC

2017-05-14 Thread Ian Bruntlett
Hi All,

Regarding the Firefox crash. Using Synaptic Package manager I installed the
Firefox debug symbols package firefox-dbg.

I then ran Firefox 3 times in gdb. It consistently crashes in a function
being called by:-
/build/firefox-wWifUV/firefox-53.0.2+build1/js/src/jit/BaselineJIT.cpp:157

I've attached more detailed files to this message.

I believe that Firefox is creating object code on the fly that is not
always compatible with some 32-bit systems.

Before I can prove that I'll have to learn how to use gdb a bit better,
look at the Firefox source code first and also brush up on my assembly
language.

2017-05-13 Thread Ian Bruntlett
Hi All,

I, too, am chasing down a problem with Firefox on Lubuntu problem. It keeps
on crashing with SIGILL (illegal instruction). Now it is late, I'm off to
bed but I do have a couple of insights.

* If you are running a GUI based programme and it fails to start correctly,
fire up a terminal and run it from there. You might see some useful error
messages.

* If you are left without a functioning web-browser, do a "sudo apt-get
install lynx" in a terminal (removing the quote marks) and then use lynx, a
text based web browser, to access the Internet.

* If Firefox is giving problems, start it in a terminal with the command
"firefox --debug" (again, removing the quotes). This starts it in a
debugger. I'm going to explore this further tomorrow and will try to
provide more helpful info about this.

BW,

Ian

[lubuntu-users] 64 Bit netbook - Acer Aspire One 722-C52rr

2017-04-23 Thread Ian Bruntlett
Hi,

I have acquired an Acer 64-bit netbook, to test Lubuntu 64-bit on. I was
wondering, does anyone know about this sort of thing? It has Windows 10 on
and I was thinking of setting it up to dual boot.

Currently 16.4GB of 297GB the hard drive is in use. I suppose before I try
to install Lubuntu I should back that up, somehow (probably Clonezilla).

TIA :)

[lubuntu-users] Downloading YouTube videos on lubuntu.

2017-02-05 Thread Ian Bruntlett
Hi,

I am trying to sort out something for a friend. He downloads YouTube videos
on Windows 7 and his laptop was rootkitted a couple of weeks back. I was
hoping to put something together using lubuntu on an old PC tower with the
hope of him not getting rootkitted. He'll need something with a GUI.

I am also trying to sort out something for myself, using Ubuntu to download
YouTube video clips. Typically programming stuff. I've done some research
and discovered that there is a Python programme called youtube-dl available
from the Synaptic Package Manager. Any recommendations/suggestions before I
install it? (I have done a backup of data files this afternoon). I am
comfortable with the bash command line.

Re: [lubuntu-users] [lubuntu-devel] Lubuntu Zesty Zapus Alpha 2 has been released!

2017-01-28 Thread Ian Bruntlett
Hi Simon et al,

Something (big) cropped up. When I returned to my NetBook, the screen had
locked. Typed my password in. System then (visually) unlocked itself,
paused briefly and then locked me back out again. You can test this more
quickly by using the keyboard shortcut of CTRL+ALT+l

Naturally I thought I'd got the password wrong. Tried typing in the
password in upper case and it didn't do the above - it gave a red error
message, pretty much expected.

The only way I could get into a locked system again was to chose a
"Shutdown" menu option.

Played around with it for a bit. Managed to unlock the NetBook successfully
once - then it resumed its unhelpful behaviour.

Is there a LaunchPad bug for this?

OK. Used your link and downloaded MD5SUMS and zesty-desktop-i386.iso. Ran
md5sum and it checked out OK:-
1c3f420bb80754bc3b31eb479d77e3b5 zesty-desktop-i386.iso

Used Startup Disc Creator on a 4GB USB flash drive.

Hardware used to install iso on:

Samsung NC10 - hawking
Intel Atom N270, 1.66GHz, 32-bit, 2GiB RAM, 149.05 GiB hard drive, no
optical drive, Ethernet and WiFi connections
Full details see here:- https://gist.github.com/21b61903871ee685fc79

Booted install media without Ethernet cable connected. Had to reboot system
after connecting Ethernet cable before it was happy to continue the update.
Opted for "Download updates while installing Lubuntu" and "Install
third-party software". Chose option to wipe hard drive and install Lubuntu
on top of it. Put in a hostname of "hawking" for this NetBook. Installer
said there was already another system on the network called "hawking".
Decided not to argue so named the system "hawking2".

Install completed successfully and asked for the (installation) storage
medium at a suitable time.

Rebooted system, logged in. The start/swift menu icon isn't present. Ran
Software Updater OK. Saw an email on lubuntu-devel complaining about
Firefox not working. On my NetBook, ran Firefox (version 50.1.0) ran fine
and I Googled "Hello World".

Normally I only use the "alternate" iso images and in the install I
repartition the hard drive manually. For some reason I did it a little
differently this time :)

There are a couple of ways to do this more easily.

1. Get a friend to install it on an old computer that they have knocking
around somewhere.

2. Get that friend to install it on your computer.

It is worthwhile using a search engine to find out about ( local ) Linux
User Groups as they will gladly help you get started.

[lubuntu-users] Security on Lubuntu PCs/Laptops

2016-10-23 Thread Ian Bruntlett
Hi,

(Intro)
I refurbish old PCs and laptops that people give me to refurbish and pass
on (free) to people with mental health problems, their carers or their
children. People give me unwanted hardware so I can do that. Sometimes I
scrounge parts. Sometimes I buy parts and pay for them personally.

(Refurbishing a computer)
I run memtest86+ on it to check the memory. Then I use dban to
comprehensively wipe the hard drive. Then I put Lubuntu on it. Also
installed are:- my illustrated guide to Lubuntu, LibreOffice, GIMP,
lubuntu-restricted-extras, gnome-games.

(Actual question)
Paul Chapple, one of my long-term lubuntu on a Dell laptop users asked me
about viruses on Linux. I do know that Linux server computers sometimes get
hacked over the Internet. I did a bit of research and found
https://www.linux.com/learn/myth-busting-linux-immune-viruses . After that,
is there anything else I should be aware of?

TIA,

I might have a solution to that problem. Start Synaptic Package Manager
(SPM), click on "Search". On the resulting dialogue box (marked "Find"),
there should be an option labelled "Look in", probably with the value
"Description and Name". Click on it and select "Name". Doing that on my
system for GIMP generates 37 results instead of 122.

Re: [lubuntu-users] [lubuntu-devel] red bug in Lubuntu alternate i386

2016-10-12 Thread Ian Bruntlett
Hi Nio,

TL;DR I've done some testing and failed to install 32-bit and 64-bit
lubuntu. As asked, wrote it up at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/debian-installer/+bug/1632675

DETAILS:-
This is what I reported on launchpad:-

Happened to me, too - on both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures:-

I used Startup Disc Creator on a 64-bit Ubuntu laptop to write the isos to
USB flash drives.

When installing lubuntu on either of the 2 systems detailed below, I got a
fatal error.

This is what I tested, 32-bit :-
md5sum yakkety-alternate-i386.iso
812a19293dadd4bdb0c6cb3d02489535 yakkety-alternate-i386.iso

Hardware details:-
Dell Dimension 8400 - herschel (for 32-bit Lubuntu testing)
Intel Pentium 4, 3GHz, 32-bit, 512MiB RAM, 74.5GiB hard drive, DVD RW
optical drive, Ethernet connection.

I got an error message during install - "Load installer components from CD
- No kernel modules were found... etc". I first tested the 32-bit system
and I eventually gave up when I got a red screen complaining about not
finding network interfaces".

This is what I tested, 64-bit :-
md5sum yakkety-alternate-amd64.iso
e142cff24db65349ce5582ba41d56149 yakkety-alternate-amd64.iso

Hardware details:-
Dell Inspiron 530 - franklin (for 64-bit Lubuntu testing)
Intel Core 2 6600, 2.4GHz, 64-bit; 2GiB RAM, 466GiB hard drive, DVD RW
optical drive, Ethernet connection
I got the same error message about no kernel modules so I gave up on that
install.

[lubuntu-users] Keyboard shortcuts

2016-09-06 Thread Ian Bruntlett
Hi,

I like the short-cut ALT+x keypress which alternately maximises the window
or returns it to its previous size.

However, I have noted with things like a terminal emulator (in which I use

as tall as possible or wide as possible.

Would other people find such shortcuts useful? Do they already exist?

Hi Nio & Walter,

Note: If someone is testing an iso, should it be a requirement that they
run Software Updater, just in case they spot bugs that have been recently
fixed?

Walter: I agree - only reproducible problems should be logged as bugs. Is
this page the right page for me to file bugs - https://bugs.launchpad.net/
lubuntu ?

Nio,
I've been doing more testing. I'm currently running memtest86+ to make sure
the hardware is OK. It has been OK in the past, I'm just checking. Will do
a bit more testing and then see what reproducible bugs I have spotted and
then file them on the above mentioned launchpad page. A friend wants me to
type up and print a letter for him tomorrow. Will see how that turns out on
this test system :)

A mystery.

Maybe the hplip libraries are not yet updated for Yakkety.
>
> Someone using HP printers and hplip, please help :-)

The crash information mentioned a .py file. That file extension is what a
Windows developer would give to a Python script file. Not a big Python
expert but I believe Python 3 is a breaking change from v2 to v3. On my
Ubuntu laptop I get this:-

ian@turing:~$ which python python2 python3
/usr/bin/python
/usr/bin/python2
/usr/bin/python3
ian@turing:~$

So if someone is doing a #!/usr/bin/python in a script requiring a
particular version (e.g. 3) then they use this as the first line of their
script:-
#!/usr/bin/python3

OK, memtest86+ 5.01 has finished testing the Netbook and there are no
memory errors.

Off to do more testing :)

This is a pet peeve of mine.

There is a work around - when the mouse pointer disappears, press the CTRL
ALT F1 keys altogether. This should take you to a black and white text
screen. Then press CTRL ALT F7 keys altogether. This should take you back
to your main screen and your mouse pointer should now be visible.

A friend of mine has a strange keyboard - he has to press FN LOCK first
before this approach will work.

As requested, I read your blog post.

1) To quote you, "I've been using LXQt for a while now, and it has a lot of
advantages not only in applications, but the desktop itself". Yes, I'd like
to read more about that.

2) Let me know when the isos will be ready. Time permitting I'll test it on
various systems. And then I'll be helping friends use it on their systems.

3) Once I've got to grips with Lubuntu using LXQt I will create an updated
version of my brief illustrated guide to Lubuntu for friends to use when
they upgrade their Lubuntu installs.

As long as Netboot is supported (http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/netboot/) it
will still be possible to install Lubuntu from CD-R. The only disadvantage
of exceeding the capacity of a CD-R is that the Lubuntu Live disc will have
to be DVD rather than CD.

It currently doesn't fit on a CD. To install one of the Ubuntus, go to
http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/netboot/ and download the relevant iso. From
what I see there, 32-bit Ubuntus can be installed by putting a 48M iso onto
CD-R and choosing options - e.g. Ubuntu or Lubuntu packages - at install
time. I've been using a NetBoot CD-R for some of my 32-bit installs.

Can I get my point over, one more time? Any live CD needs more resources to
run from CD/DVD than it does to run from hard drive. Your problem may
simply be that your computer doesn't have enough resources to run a Lubuntu
live CD/DVD. OTOH, there are various isos for Lubuntu - there is
"alternate" which is used only for installs, never as a live CD/DVD - are
you trying to use "alternate"? If so, please try using the "desktop" iso as
that is intended to act as a live CD/DVD, if required.

I thank you but it sounds like there will not be a corrected LIVE CD

Re: [lubuntu-users] lubuntu 16.04.1 Live CD

2016-08-08 Thread Ian Bruntlett
Hi Neil.

I haven't had Lubuntu fail to install. I tend not to use it as a live CD as
the computers I work on are rather old and not really suited for that task.

I refurbish old PCs on behalf of a mental health charity, Contact, and they
are given to Contact's members, their carers or families.

What kind of processor is being used? What make and model of graphics card?
How much memory is available to Lubuntu?

It might be worthwhile running memtest86+ to verify that the system's RAM
is OK.

I have a collection of multi-coloured USB flash drives from Amazon that I
use to put operating systems / live boot images on, kept in a transparent
pencil case. I have a piece of notepaper for each flash drive that states
what the contents of a particular flash drive are. It is useful when
dealing with Lubuntu "daily" release images :)

I refurbish old computers with Lubuntu. I'm a volunteer at Contact, a local

given to Contact's members, their carers or families.

So you could try a local charity or a local Linux User Group, if there are

[lubuntu-users] Firefox playing flash

2016-07-16 Thread Ian Bruntlett
Hi,

I'm testing a system that has had problems with the i915 graphics driver in
the past. At the moment it is running Lubuntu 16.04 LTS GNU/Linux and
everything is fine.

However, I haven't activated flash playback in Firefox, yet. In the run up
to Firefox 47 (I think), I was led to believe that Flash files would be
natively handled using HTML5.

That doesn't seem to have happened. I've looked in Firefox's Tools ->
Add-ons and searching for "Shockwave Flash" yields 98 results. Not too sure
which one to try.

For security reasons, I disabled Flash playback on computers.

Can anyone advise me what to do next?

TIA,

Ian

When it comes to old systems, as time goes by, I have fewer and fewer older
systems to deal with that demand an O.S. image that fits on a CD. Being
able to boot from CD is helpful but I have an external USB DVD writer that
I currently use to install Lubuntu on a Samsung NC10 NetBook that doesn't
even have a CD drive.

Being able to use an old system is still important to me. So the "386" isoe
are vital for the Samsung NC10 and 2 friend's laptops that have Pentium M
processors in them.

[lubuntu-users] Keyboard shortcuts to run arbitrary programs

2016-05-25 Thread Ian Bruntlett
Hi,

I use both Ubuntu and Lubuntu.

On Ubuntu I can use Super+1 to run the first program on the panel on the
left of the screen.

On Lubuntu, I can add programs onto the "Task bar" - added GNU emacs today,
to accompany the icons to 1) start PCManFM and 2) start a web browser. I'd
like to have a keyboard shortcut to run these options so I don't have to
use the mouse to start one of those programs.

Any ideas?

TIA,
