[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 24.04 LTS Released!

2024-04-25 Thread Simon Quigley
ation menu.

 Picom Configuration Utility

Lubuntu is the lightest official Ubuntu flavor. That is by design - we
try to keep things small, sleek, and clean, rather than big, heavy, and
fancy. This commitment to a lightweight experience is most evident in
our lack of fancy desktop effects.

What if you actually want some fancy desktop effects?

With the Picom Configuration utility, you can now easily enable window
transparency, titlebar transparency, shadows, and fade-in/fade-out
effects on your desktop, and more. Note that changes made in this
utility will require you to log out and log back in before they take effect.

Artwork
---

Thanks to the efforts of our team and the work of other open-source
artists and designers, we have significantly refreshed the artwork in
Lubuntu 24.04:

 * The wallpaper and login screen have been refreshed with images
designed specifically for Lubuntu 24.04.

 * The Lubuntu Manual icon has been refreshed.
 * For those who like to customize their desktop, you can install the
`lxqt-themes-extra` package to get two new LXQt themes (win-eleven-dark
and sombre-et-rond).

Known Bugs

Please see the current list on the official release announcement:

Common Release Notes

Please also check the Ubuntu Release Notes for more common issues and
bugs affecting all Ubuntu flavors:
https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/noble-numbat-release-notes/39890

What is Lubuntu?

Lubuntu is an official Ubuntu flavor which uses the Lightweight Qt
Desktop Environment (LXQt). The project’s goal is to provide a
lightweight yet functional Linux distribution based on a rock-solid
Ubuntu base. Lubuntu provides a simple but modern and powerful graphical
user interface, and comes with a wide variety of applications so you can
browse, email, chat, play, and be productive. You can find the following
major applications and toolkits installed by default in this release:

 * LXQt 1.4.0
 * Qt 5.15.13
 * Mozilla Firefox as shipped in the snap package, the version present
on the ISO is version 125.0.2.

 * LibreOffice 24.2.2
 * VLC 3.0.20
 * Featherpad 1.4.1
 * Discover Software Center 5.27.11

You can find a variety of other applications installed which aim to
enhance your experience while staying out of the way of your normal
workflow. New features and bugfixes in core Ubuntu components can be
found here: https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/noble-numbat-release-notes/39890

Lubuntu Manual
--

The Lubuntu Team has been hard at work in polishing the Lubuntu Manual
to make it easy for new and experienced users alike to use their system
more productively. The manual can be found at manual.lubuntu.me. We want
to thank Lyn Perrine for all the hard work she has put into the Lubuntu
Manual. Thank you!

Need help quickly? The Lubuntu Manual can be accessed via the “Lubuntu
Manual” desktop icon.

### How can I help?

We can always use more help! No matter your skill level or your
technical experience, there’s something you can help with that can make
a huge difference in Lubuntu. Join us on our chat (which is bridged
three ways to Matrix, Telegram, and IRC) and talk to us there. Whether
you know another language, have some spare time to help us test Lubuntu,
are good at writing documentation, or just want to stay “in the know,”
that is the place to be. More information about contributing can be
found here. If you want to contribute to Lubuntu but do not feel you
have the time or skills, consider buying a t-shirt or donating to
Lubuntu. Another great method to get involved is bug reporting. If you
notice an issue, please file a bug using the instructions on the Lubuntu
Wiki. Don’t want to file a bug? Let us know what the problem is (in
detail, enough that we can reproduce it) and we can assist you in filing
one or do it ourselves.

### Contributors

We would like to thank the following contributors for dedicating their
time to Lubuntu this cycle. Thank you!

 * Simon Quigley
 * Aaron Rainbolt

### Global Team

The Lubuntu Global Team has been created to foster communities in
non-English languages and locales. An up-to-date list of our communities
can be found on our Links page, but the existing groups include:
Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Italian, Chinese, German, Japanese,
Arabic, and French. If you would like to start a language group, join
our development channel and talk with the Global Team. At minimum, you
should have a few interested drivers of the community, and at least one
administrator that speaks English. We now have multiple languages
available in the support section of our Discourse forum.

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 22.10 Feature Freeze Fast Approaching: What It Means and How To Help

2022-08-23 Thread Simon Quigley

Dearest Lubuntu contributors and users,

During every release cycle, we hit a milestone titled Feature Freeze,
where developers in the Ubuntu and Lubuntu projects are no longer
permitted to upload new versions of software without an exception, in
order to dedicate the remainder of the cycle to improving stability.

The Feature Freeze date for Lubuntu is Thursday, August 25th, 2022. I
will be around to process any final uploads from 3 PM to 6 PM US Central
Time on that date, after which I will declare Lubuntu to be in Feature
Freeze. If you're aware of any new features that would be beneficial to
include for users, please ping me in our development channel on
Matrix(/IRC/Telegram)[1] and I will address those requests first come,
first serve.

On my personal wishlist is the LXQt menu overhaul, yet another update to
Calamares, and further evaluation of the upstream LXQt code to ensure
there isn't a bugfix or feature we can cherry-pick. Unfortunately, after
speaking with LXQt upstream, they do not plan on releasing 1.2 until
shortly after the release of Lubuntu 22.10, and backports for non-LTS
releases are still up in the air. This weekend I will prepare a
QA-related document outlining every single commit we have cherry-picked,
why, and what users should expect to be different when reporting bugs to
upstream. My goal is to have this done in a thorough enough manner that
upstream LXQt will have little complaints. I have blocked off 1 PM to 6
PM on Saturday, tentatively, to do that.

You may be asking, how can I help? By testing[1], of course :) with
features no longer free-flowing into 22.10, this is the time to test
every "nook and cranny" of the operating system. What doesn't work for
you? Is there anything we can do better without vastly expanding the
scope of our mission?

If you have any questions, please do let me know. I will note publicly
at this point that the Lubuntu Council has granted me some of my former
permissions before my hiatus, including Release Manager capacity. I'm
glad to be back, and I hope to serve the Lubuntu project well once again.

Thanks!

[lubuntu-users] Announcing the Lubuntu Constitution and Lubuntu Members

2019-02-01 Thread Simon Quigley
Dear Lubuntu Community,

We are pleased to announce the Lubuntu Constitution, which introduces
the Lubuntu Council and Lubuntu Member system, that can be found
here[1]. The full rationale can be found on our blog here[2].

We are encouraging people who have demonstrated significant and
sustained contributions to Lubuntu via the mailing list, forums, or any
other support venues (you know who you are) to apply to become official
project members by following the new process we have laid out[3].

Let us know if you have any questions.

Thank you!

[lubuntu-users] Introducing the Lubuntu Council

2019-01-19 Thread Simon Quigley
Dear Lubuntu users and contributors,

The Lubuntu community has grown exponentially since our switch to LXQt.
With new users, contributors, and Lubuntu enthusiasts among many other
people who have decided to join our community, we are finding the need
to scale the project further than the unwritten technically-led
oligarchy that we currently have in the Lubuntu project. Therefore, we
are pleased to announce the Lubuntu Council.

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 18.10 (Cosmic Cuttlefish) Released!

2018-10-19 Thread Simon Quigley
You can find the full release announcement here:
https://lubuntu.me/cosmic-released

Please also take a look at the release video made by Michael from
TuxDigital:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRgcsTQGvwU

I just want to say thanks to everyone who has participated in these
mailing lists over this past cycle, whether it's helping other people,
reporting problems for us to solve, or discussing issues in general, you
all are very much appreciated. :)

If anyone is lurking and wanting to get more involved with the project,
now's your time to reach out. At the start of the 19.04 cycle we're
going to have a lot to do, and not just in terms of technical tasks, but
the Lubuntu Manual needs some more work as well as other non-technical
tasks. Feel free to send me an email with what you would like to help
with, and we can find a place for you. That's what at least seven people
(listed on the release announcement) did throughout the cycle, and we
found a place for them where every single one of them has made an
incredible impact on the project. It could be you, seriously!

Until the 19.04 codename is announced, I would encourage Lubuntu
contributors to take a short break if there's nothing to help with with
respect to 18.10. I'll personally be taking a short break from directly
contributing until the codename is announced, with the exception of
packages that need to be uploaded.

Thanks again, and have a good night.

It would be great if you could get the error logs from those.

How did you launch Calamares? Right now, you need to go to the start
menu and search "Install System" which should launch it. If not, type
`sudo calamares` (yes, sudo, pkexec doesn't work and sudo doesn't break
anything in this case) in QTerminal.

You just go through the install like normal.

The only thing I haven't tested yet is Secure Boot, so if you have error
messages from that, it would be great if you could file a bug with them
against calamares-settings-ubuntu.

Thanks.

Bug description:
Hi! I have used Lubuntu for many years and thought the lubuntu.net
webstte was the official site for lubuntu. I have subscribed to the
RSS feed to get news, but lately, there have been very few. Recently,
I discovered the lubuntu.me website. It seems more active and the blog
is up to date on news. There is no indication on either that they are
not official, but on the bottom of both, there seems to be information
pointing towards both being owned by individuals, not by the Lubuntu

any. Would it not be less confusing for users to have one website and

[lubuntu-users] Fwd: First set of Bionic (sort-of) RC images.

2018-04-21 Thread Simon Quigley
Please help test!

 Forwarded Message
Subject: First set of Bionic (sort-of) RC images.
Date: Sat, 21 Apr 2018 23:22:56 +
From: Adam Conrad
To: ubuntu-rele...@lists.ubuntu.com

Over the next couple of hours, builds for Bionic Final should be added
to the tracker[1] for all flavours. The builds have some intentional
omissions, but please do test them anyway.

Known issues that will be addressed Sunday/Monday:
 - Volume label still set to Beta
 - base-files still not the final version
 - kernel will have (at least) one more revision

Despite the above, please, please, please test your images. Do not
wait for a "final" build to test, as that guarantees your final build
will be broken. We need you testing now, iterating uploads to get
your bugs fixed, filing bugs and escalating where you need help.

Again: DO NOT DELAY, TEST NOW, FIX BUGS, FILE BUGS, ESCALATE FOR HELP.

Happy testing everyone, and here's hoping we push out another smooth
and stress-free release on Thursday.

... Adam Conrad

Kernel autoremoval is something that is being looked into for this

To be clear, Lubuntu Next is not what will become 18.04, it's the
Lubuntu with LXQt that we're experimenting with.

All of these problems are known, but we're spending our time polishing
the LXDE Lubuntu that ships as an LTS in about a month.

Thanks.

[lubuntu-users] Fwd: Xenial 16.04.4 Call For Testing (All Flavours)

2018-02-25 Thread Simon Quigley
It's that time again! We need your help testing Lubuntu 16.04.4 so it
can be released on Thursday (03/01/2018).

This Lubuntu release only features Desktop (ubiquity) amd64 and i386
images, so there are no Alternate (d-i) images and no PowerPC images.

Read the below announcement for more details, and let us know in any of
our development channels[1] (#lubuntu-devel, Matrix, or Telegram) if you
run into any showstopping issues.

Thanks everyone!

Subject: Xenial 16.04.4 Call For Testing (All Flavours)

From: Lukasz Zemczak
To: ubuntu-qual...@lists.ubuntu.com, ubuntu-rele...@lists.ubuntu.com

Hello everyone,

Some time ago our first release candidate builds for all flavours that
released with xenial have been posted to the ISO tracker [1] into the
16.04.4 milestone.

As with each point-release, we would need volunteers to grab the ISOs
of their flavour/flavours of choice and perform general testing. We
obviously are mostly looking for regressions from 16.04.3, but please
fill in any bugs you encounter (against the respective source packages
on Launchpad). There is still time until the target release date on
1st of March, but for now we're not considering pulling in any more
fixes besides ones for potential release-blockers that we encounter.

With enough luck the images that have been made available just now
might be the ones we release on Thursday.

Thank you!

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 17.04 has reached End of Life

2018-01-15 Thread Simon Quigley
The Lubuntu Team announces that as a non-LTS release, 17.04 has a
9-month support cycle and, as such, reached end of life on Saturday,
January 13, 2018. Lubuntu will no longer provide bug fixes or security
updates for 17.04, and we strongly recommend that you update to 17.10,
which continues to be actively supported with security updates and
select high-impact bug fixes.

For more important information about this End of Life notice, take a

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 17.10.1 (Artful Aardvark) released!

2018-01-11 Thread Simon Quigley
Lubuntu 17.10.1 has been released to fix a major problem affecting many
Lenovo laptops that causes the computer to have BIOS problems after
installing. You can find more details about this problem here[1].

*Please note that the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities have not been
fixed in this ISO, so we advise that if you install this ISO, update
directly after.*

This release is no different in terms of features from the 17.10
release, and is comparable to an LTS point release in that all updates
since the 17.10 release have been rolled into this ISO. You can find the
initial announcement here[2].

You can download 17.10.1 ISOs here:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/17.10.1/release/

Many thanks to Lubuntu's testers (especially the ones from Google
Code-In, that was a great help!) and Steve Langasek from the Ubuntu
Release Team for making this happen!

This has now been fixed, and you should be able to download ISOs from
the ISO QA Tracker.

Note that I manually went in and fixed this for Lubuntu and other
flavors might not have a fix yet; I've pinged on #ubuntu-release and am
waiting for a response on that.

Thanks for the heads up!

Although I think the emphasis is less on the logo and more on the
Lubuntu name and the trademark associated with it. From Canonical's

Rafael has this permission and Mario doesn't. I think that's all he's

What you seem to fail to understand is that we have been attempting to
get your closed site, Lubuntu.net/org, into official, open, Lubuntu Team
hands for more than a year now. But once 17.10 was out of the way, and
after several discussions with the Ubuntu Community Council, both public
and private, we decided to take legal action as a last resort. For the
sake of transparency (and since this does not include replies from
Legal), this was our email:

After this email was sent, we received a follow-up saying that they
would make some enquiries. After this happened, you:
 1. Stole the artwork and screenshots of Rafael Laguna, who, rightfully,
has explicit written permission to use the Lubuntu trademark, and is the
origin of these images and screenshots.
 2. Created several social media accounts and resources which the
Lubuntu Team has no control over promoting your new site which you stole
the artwork and screenshots from.
 3. FOSSASIA (which, I would like to officially say, has no affiliation
with the official Lubuntu Project in any way, shape, or form) created a
Google Code-In task (while Ubuntu is an official project in Google

this), which I will l

Thanks for pointing this out. We're aware of this within the team, and
we're working with the Release Team to get a solution. We'll likely have
to respin the 17.10 ISOs after the fact as a result of this.

We're on Twitter at http://twitter.com/LubuntuOfficial or on Telegram at

Thanks again!

We have some differences, for example, Ubuntu extends Debian's Britney
tool to provide extra verification such as running autopkgtests and
installability tests before releasing for general installability. This
is done via use of a -proposed partial suite, and then when ready, it
migrates for people to install. Debian is different in that once
something is uploaded to Unstable, binaries become available as soon as
they are done building, so stability is not guaranteed.

> They use lintian for the Debian package lint checks, and
> pbuilber to compile it

Actually, this is incorrect. Launchpad uses sbuild to build the
packages, then once that is done, the binaries get published to the
-proposed pocket. Then from there, in this order, package suitability
for general installation is determined:
 1. If the package has autopkgtests, run them. If any of the package's
binaries have reverse dependencies with autopkgtests, run those too
against the new binaries. All tests must either pass or be "hinted"
(failures are OK) by a member of the release team.
 2. Run installation tests with the binaries into the release pocket. If
the package isn't installable, it doesn't migrate. This avoids broken
systems on major library transitions.
 3. Make sure there are no bugs filed against the package with the
"block-proposed" tag.

More documentation is available here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ProposedMigration

> and make the packages which does some pretty

Well, not directly by apt. Checksumming of the binaries is done on
Launchpad and after apt downloads the packages, it verifies the
integrity of the binaries.

> PPA)

Correct, and for any Ubuntu flavor as well as Ubuntu itself, all of the
packages are in one central archive.

Right, gilir might know more about that but for right now we don't have
any programs we wrote ourself.

We also do nothing on GitHub, although with the new work done by the
Ubuntu Server Team, packaging might be available on Git, and we might be
able to mirror the packaging which goes into the archive on GitHub. More
information on the development of this tooling is available here:
https://insights.ubuntu.com/2017/07/24/developing-ubuntu-using-git/

I hope this clears up any confusion.

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 17.10 (Artful Aardvark) released!

2017-10-19 Thread Simon Quigley
Thanks to all the hard work from our contributors, Lubuntu 17.10 has
been released! With the codename Artful Aardvark, Lubuntu 17.10 is the
13th release of Lubuntu, with support until July of 2018.

  What is Lubuntu?

*Lubuntu* is an official *Ubuntu* flavor based on the Lightweight X11
Desktop Environment (LXDE). The project’s goal is to provide a
lightweight yet functional distribution. *Lubuntu* specifically targets
older machines with lower resources, but also runs great on newer
hardware. Along with a simple but usable graphical user interface,
*Lubuntu* comes with a wide variety of applications chosen for their
small footprint so you can browse, email, chat, play, and be productive.

  Where can I download it?

On the *Ubuntu* cdimage server
, we have
images for the following architectures:

  * amd64 (commonly referred to as 64-bit)
  * i386 (commonly referred to as 32-bit)

The release notes are here
 if you
wish to read them. We have left out some notes that are common to all
flavors, so read the *Ubuntu* release notes
 if you wish.

  What’s improved since 17.04?

  * We now ship with Linux Kernel 4.13.
  * General bug fix release as we prepare to switch to LXQt.
  * LXDE components have been updated with bug fixes.
  * The artwork has received an update.
  * The latest release of Audacious, 3.9, is included by default.
  * Hardinfo has been updated to the latest upstream snapshot.

  System Requirements

*Lubuntu* is a good operating system for many old computers, but not for
all of them. Some computers have too little horsepower or memory. A rule
of thumb is that the computer should not be more than 10 years old
(although some older computers are known to work as well).

  * *Memory (RAM)*: for advanced internet services like Google+,
YouTube, Google Drive, and Facebook, your computer needs at least 1
GB of RAM. For local programs like LibreOffice and simple browsing
habits, your computer needs at least 512 MB of RAM.
  * *Processor (CPU)*: the minimum specification for CPU is Pentium 4 or
Pentium M or AMD K8. Older processors are too slow and the AMD K7
has problems with Flash video.

  How do I get support?

We recommend that you email the lubuntu-users mailing list. Send an
email to lubuntu-users AT lists DOT ubuntu DOT com.

If you prefer IRC, our support channel is #lubuntu on freenode IRC
. If you don’t
have an IRC client, click the link in the earlier sentence, type in a
nickname, press start, state your question and press Enter to speak. *If
your question is not answered right away, stick around, and if you don’t
get an answer, email the lubuntu-users list.*

  How do I contribute?

We always need more help! If you would like to contribute, head over to
our Getting Involved page
. If you have any
questions about contributing, please join #lubuntu-devel on freenode or
email the lubuntu-devel mailing list at lubuntu-devel AT lists DOT
ubuntu DOT com.

  Known Issues

For known issues, please see the release notes
.

  Lubuntu Next

Alongside *Lubuntu* 17.10 featuring LXDE, the *Lubuntu* Team is proud to
announce an early adopter’s release of *Lubuntu* Next, featuring the
LXQt 0.11.1 Desktop Environment, which is the Qt 5 port of LXDE. *While
this release is available to install using the links below, we do NOT
recommend that people use it in production unless they are aware of the
somewhat critical bugs associated (which are more than 10 at the point
of writing this). It also wouldn’t be a bad idea to be in contact with
us as well*. A rule of thumb is that if you do not know what we are
talking about, don’t install it quite yet.

You can install *Lubuntu* Next by using the links available on the
cdimage server
 or by using
the Minimal ISO for 17.10 and selecting the Lubuntu Qt desktop
.

  Connect With Us

If you would like to connect with us on various platforms, we have
several ways to stay in touch .

Have you tried clicking on the applet? It doesn't ask for the WiFi
password because we don't have that notification system configured.

Did you *just* try a left click or a right click too?

That's expected, default settings aren't properly set. It's in the
release notes...

It is, it just doesn't show as the Qt version in the panel.

[lubuntu-users] Call for testing: Artful Aardvark Final Beta

2017-09-26 Thread Simon Quigley
Hello everybody, it's that time again! The Lubuntu team needs your help
testing Lubuntu Artful Aardvark Beta 2 (the final beta) so we can
release tomorrow.

We need the tests completed that are on the ISO QA Tracker[1] to ensure
that everything works properly. If all the Lubuntu tests are done,
please feel free to help out our friends over at the other flavors. They
would appreciate help as well. :)

Within the next day I will be working on the release notes[2]. Check
back tomorrow if you want to proofread/confirm the notes. If you found
any new bugs, please link to them on the release notes.

I'll also be working on preparing the release notes and announcement for
Lubuntu Next, as I plan on releasing that as well.

If you found any other way to help that hasn't been listed above,
respond to this email, send me an email, or join #lubuntu-devel on
freenode[3] and ask there.

Thanks again everyone!

What might happen is that we'll stick with Lubuntu LXDE for 18.04 LTS,
and have a smooth upgrade procedure and all the bugs worked out for
20.04. While it *may* be an option on the table, it's not an option I'd
personally like to take. Once LXDE is gone, I don't want to bring it
back unless it gets a GTK 3 or even GTK 4/etc. port.

That being said, the support period for 18.04 will be until April of
2021 for Lubuntu. Once that time comes around (maybe even when 18.04 is
released), we can discuss support periods for LXDE. If somebody has a
whole stack built on Lubuntu and doesn't feel like that's enough time to
migrate it, please feel free to personally contact me if that is nowhere
near enough time for you and we can work something out.
(don't worry, when we finally look at deprecating LXDE, we'll work
something out, this won't be the final chance...)

[lubuntu-users] Call for testing: SRU for LXTerminal

2017-07-13 Thread Simon Quigley
Hello everyone!

In Debian, a fix for an issue was applied from upstream that was
affecting LXTerminal, where tabs could not be renamed. This has been
available in Artful for a bit, but I have been working on getting the
fix in the archive for Zesty.

The fix has been uploaded to zesty-proposed and now needs some testing.
All of the details are available on https://pad.lv/1703307 including
what was fixed, and we now need some people to help confirm that the
update does not introduce any regressions and that it works.

The more people test the better, and the quicker it is tested, the
quicker it gets released for all users of Lubuntu 17.04 to enjoy. So
please, if you could help us out, that would be great.

Thanks!

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu Artful Aardvark Alpha 1 has been released!

2017-06-29 Thread Simon Quigley
Lubuntu Artful Aardvark Alpha 1 (soon to be 17.10) has been released!
Also in this release (in addition to the usual LXDE ISO) is an
experimental image with LXQt instead of LXDE.

For the LXDE edition, we have a couple papercuts listed in the release
notes[1], so please take a look there.

You can grab the Lubuntu images from here:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/artful/alpha-1/

*We recommend that if you install Lubuntu Artful Aardvark Alpha 1, that
you download the LXDE edition rather than the experimental LXQt ISO. The
LXQt ISO will most likely break your system.*

If you would like to read the release notes for Lubuntu Next (the
*experimental* LXQt edition of Lubuntu), you can find them here[2]. The
release notes lists all of the known issues for the images.

You can grab the *experimental* Lubuntu Next images from here:

platform can still receive updates. This is due to the fact that PowerPC
users would be left with an unsupported kernel after support is dropped
in the development release, Zesty Zapus.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Lubuntu is a good operating system for many old computers, but not for
all of them. Some computers have too little horsepower or memory. A rule
of thumb is that the computer should not be more than 10 years old.

*Memory (RAM)*

For advanced internet services like Google+, YouTube, Google Drive, and
Facebook, your computer needs at least 1 GB of RAM.

For local programs like LibreOffice and simple browsing habits, your
computer needs at least 512 MB of RAM.

*Processor (CPU)*

The minimum specification for CPU is Pentium 4 or Pentium M or AMD K8.
Older processors are too slow and the AMD K7 has problems with Flash video.

The reason that we replaced this with GNOME Software in 16.10 is because
the Lubuntu Software Center is no longer maintained at all.

I would recommend that you not use it.

[lubuntu-users] [ANNOUNCEMENT] Lubuntu 16.10 Released!

2016-10-13 Thread Simon Quigley
Thanks to all the hard work from our contributors, Lubuntu 16.10 has
been released! With the codename Yakkety Yak, Lubuntu 16.10 is the 11th
release of Lubuntu, with support until July 2017.

We even have Lenny the Lubuntu mascot[1] dressed up for the occasion!

WHAT IS LUBUNTU?

Lubuntu is an official Ubuntu flavor based on the Lightweight X11
Desktop Environment (LXDE). The project’s goal is to provide a
lightweight yet functional distribution. Lubuntu specifically targets
older machines with lower resources, but also runs great on newer
hardware. Along with a simple but usuable graphical user interface,
Lubuntu comes with a wide variety of applications chosen for their small
footprint so you can browse, email, chat, play, and be productive.

WHERE CAN I DOWNLOAD IT?

On the Ubuntu cdimage server[2], we have images for the following
architectures:
 - amd64 (commonly referred to as 64-bit)
 - i386 (commonly referred to as 32-bit)

The release notes are here if you wish to read them[3]. We have left out
some notes that are common to all flavors, so read the Ubuntu release
notes[4] if you wish.

WHAT'S IMPROVED SINCE 16.04?

 - We now ship with Linux Kernel 4.8.
 - General bug fix release as we prepare to switch to LXQt.
 - LXDE components have been updated with bug fixes.
 - The artwork has received an update.

HOW DO I GET SUPPORT?

Our support channel is #lubuntu on freenode IRC[5]. If you don’t have an
IRC client, click the link in the earlier sentence, type in a nickname,
press start, state your question and press Enter to speak.

We also have the lubuntu-users mailing list. Send an email to
lubuntu-users AT lists DOT ubuntu DOT com.

HOW DO I CONTRIBUTE?

We always need more help! If you would like to contribute, head over to
our Getting Involved page[6]. If you have any questions about
contributing, please join #lubuntu-devel on freenode or email the
lubuntu-devel mailing list at lubuntu-devel AT lists DOT ubuntu DOT com.

KNOWN ISSUES

For known issues, please see the release notes[3].

LXQt

Unfortunately, we could not get LXQt ready in time for 16.10, so Lubuntu
16.10 ships with LXDE.

2016-10-11 Thread Simon Quigley
Hello Nio,

It seems we're going to have one more respin for the kernel, and barring
any unforeseen difficulties, that will be our final respin.

At this point in the Yakkety release schedule, we'll let everyone know
about respins, as it's very important to get testers.

Thanks for asking!

[lubuntu-users] AskUbuntu Tag

2016-09-26 Thread Simon Quigley
Good morning,

Just a short reminder that we have a designated place on AskUbuntu for
people to tag their Lubuntu-related questions. Here it is:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/tagged/lubuntu?sort=newest=15

If someone could go through and answer a few questions there when they
have a minute, that would be great. This evening I will subscribe to the
RSS feed (on the bottom of the page) myself and attempt to navigate
through a few of them.

For example, here is one submitted 7 hours ago that someone could either
ask clarifying questions about or straight up answer:

Have a nice day!

[lubuntu-users] What I didn't get a chance to talk about at the meeting

2016-09-15 Thread Simon Quigley
Hello everyone,

I had a few agenda items I wanted to discuss at the recent Lubuntu
meeting, but unfortunately I didn't do the math right on the time zones
and I ended up not being able to attend.

BUG DAY:

Walter wanted a report on Bug Day, but to make it short, nothing
happened. Nobody seemed to pop in on IRC, and I didn't see any bug
activity in particular.

LUBUNTU MANUAL:

Slow progress (been busy with a lot of different things). I would always
appreciate the help. Here's the GitHub repo which should have all the
details if you'd like to give us a hand:
https://github.com/lubuntu-team/lubuntu-manual

I don't think it applies to DocumentationStringFreeze (which was today)
because it's not a package. If it all goes as planned, there will be
time before release to translate, if desired.

LXQt/PLANS FOR 16.10 AND 17.04:

We won't get LXQt 0.11 in the archive for 16.10 because they didn't
release yet. Hopefully for 17.04 we'll be good to go. I've heard that
LXQt 0.11 provides a lot of improvements, so I'm looking forward to it. :)

(maybe I'll get it in a PPA somewhere and take it for a test drive, who
knows? ;) )

Lubuntu team, I would like to propose that we at the very minimum
provide an image with a fully featured Lubuntu with LXQt for 17.04 (if
not default). This would include LXQt 0.11 (or 0.12, depending on their
timing) and would have all the default settings set. Even if we can't do
it, it would be a nice goal to set, just to have something to work towards.

It seems we're just waiting on a patch to be merged into Qt[1] so we can
set an environment variable to make our default settings apply
correctly[2]. Then, depending on when it's merged and what version of Qt
ships with 17.04, we might have to get the patch cherry-picked[3]. I'm
CCing Palo Kisa who has been awesome in helping me figure out a few
little quirks along the way (for example, this pull request which will
really help us in the future: https://github.com/lxde/liblxqt/pull/104
), just in case he has anything to add. But, I honestly don't see this
happening right away as 16.10 is right around the corner (we can use
PPAs to test, though).

Something to consider would be doing what Kubuntu does. If an individual
running 16.10 would like to use LXQt from the Yakkety archive, we can
upload to a backports PPA. Thoughts on this, Julien?

Within the next day or two, I'll get a tarball and some instructions on
installing LXQt and manually applying the default settings I whipped up,
so people can get testing. I haven't had a good experience building
ISOs, but I'll try again in a few days as well.

For those people who are unaware, we currently have a blocker in our
LXQt transition. We would like to apply some default settings, but there
are currently some upstream blockers (Qt at the moment, there might be
another blocker in the future, who knows?) that we have to unblock to be
able to continue.

Lubuntu team (especially Julien), objections?

Lubuntu community, about the above, more opportunities to test things
will certainly come very soon (within the next few weeks). We look
forward to any feedback you might have. :)

I encourage feedback on anything I wrote about here.

Have a good night everyone!

[1] https://codereview.qt-project.org/#/c/169245/
[2] An environment variable has to be set so LXQt knows which settings
to use.
[3] Just that patch could be put in the Ubuntu Qt package, which allows
for things like this to be immediately worked with.

By the way, MP = Merge Proposal. I have to set the default settings then
allow the changes to be proposed against the existing settings.

It's that time again! The Lubuntu team needs your help testing Lubuntu
Yakkety Beta so we can release without any problems on Thursday.

Later I'll work on the Beta 1 release notes[1]. Check back tomorrow if
you want to proofread/confirm the notes. If you found any
new bugs, please link to them on the release notes.

If you found any other way to help that hasn't been listed above,
respond to this email, send me an email, or join #lubuntu-devel on
freenode[2] and mention it there.

Lubuntu Yakkety Yak Beta 1 will be released on Thursday, so please get
your testing in as soon as possible!

NOTE: We don't need PowerPC testing as we don't release PowerPC for
non-LTS releases.

14.04.5, is now available for download.

This release includes images for amd64 (commonly referred to as 64-bit),
i386 (commonly referred to as 32-bit), and PowerPC.

The release notes[1], which covers the latest update as well as the
whole history of the release, is linked below. There is also a link to

Re: [lubuntu-users] Lubuntu Yakkety Yak Alpha 2 Call for Testing

2016-07-27 Thread Simon Quigley
Greetings,

Looking at the tests again, it would be nice to finish up one last
*mandatory* Lubuntu Alternate i386 test and the optional ones, but I'd
like to give a HUGE thanks to Nio and Brendan for completing these tests
before I even had to say anything. I seriously don't know if the Lubuntu
team would release anything without these guys. :)

Also, if anybody with a PPC machine would like to test to make sure it
works, even though we aren't releasing an image, that would be great. :)

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu Yakkety Yak Alpha 2 Call for Testing

2016-07-27 Thread Simon Quigley
Greetings,

I apologize for being late on this, my fault.

It's time again! The Lubuntu team needs your help testing Lubuntu
Yakkety Alpha 2 so we can release tomorrow.

We just need the tests completed that are on http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/ .

Right now I'm working on the release notes for Alpha 2[1]. Check back in
a few hours if you want to proofread/confirm the notes. If you found any
new bugs, please link to them on the release notes.

If you found any other way to help that hasn't been listed above,
respond to this email, send me an email, or join #lubuntu-devel on
freenode[2] and mention it there.

As for not getting this out sooner, yesterday I realized that nobody
stepped up to help with the global Alpha 2 release yesterday and Lubuntu
was looking to do one (I've had my eye on this for a while), so late
afternoon US time yesterday, I stepped up. After that, I got tired and
had to go to sleep, I slept all day today, and I recently woke up.
That's why this didn't get out a few days ago, and I'm really sorry. My
fault.

For those of you who can test before we release, thank you. But I
understand all of you can't.

>From the recent discussions about PPC, I'd like to mention that we do
not release PPC on non-LTS releases, so although the testing helps, and
we still need people to test to make sure it doesn't break, we won't be
releasing a PPC image.

Thanks again everyone! :)

Re: [lubuntu-users] uploaded: almost the released 16.04.1 LTS version for PowerPC

2016-07-24 Thread Simon Quigley
The Lubuntu team unfortunately can NOT recommend these images due to
Phill not being a member of the team any more[1] and it not being an
official server or builder.

To be clear, we didn't release Lubuntu 16.04.1 for PowerPC, and there
are no official images that we can recommend. I would recommend that
people stay away from these images because of the aforementioned concerns.

Re: [lubuntu-users] State of PPC

2016-07-23 Thread Simon Quigley
his and I filed a bug,
thank you so much for telling us about this," I ask them, "can you

https://launchpad.net/link/to/package/+filebug.; I just make sure that
they know we're listening and understand. In fact, could you link me to
some of these forums? Maybe I should link the release announcements
there and respond to responses on that. I could also look at some
threads and instruct people on filing bugs and reporting issues that a
bunch of people are having in a way we can see it.

And the fact of the matter is that when people complain, "the devs
aren't paying attention!" or "the devs don't care," we do. We want to
make sure that Lubuntu is better for everyone. We just don't have the
time to scour the internet for people claiming, "it works!" or "we have
this problem" on release day to be able to follow through where the
people writing didn't. We want to release. So the time that person spent
grumbling about the problem and how it is a big issue could be time
spent reporting it. All it takes is *one* person reporting a problem in
the correct channels to get it fixed. In fact, take a look at our
release announcement:

Greetings,

If you look at the release announcement, it states:

This is because we received *zero* testing for PowerPC in 16.04.1. If
you want these images in the future, make sure they are tested[1]. :)

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 16.04.1 LTS has been released!

2016-07-21 Thread Simon Quigley
Thanks to all the hard work from our contributors, we are pleased to
announce that Lubuntu 16.04.1 LTS has been released! This release
provides updates to the Lubuntu 16.04 LTS to reduce the update time
post-download and an upgrade path for users running Lubuntu 14.04 LTS.

WHERE CAN I DOWNLOAD IT?

On the Ubuntu cdimage server[1], we have images for the following
architectures:

- amd64 (commonly referred to as 64-bit)
- i386 (commonly referred to as 32-bit)

The release notes[2] are here if you wish to read them. We have left
out some notes that are common to all flavors, so read the Ubuntu
release notes[3] if you wish.

This release does NOT include PowerPC, although users of the PowerPC
platform can still receive updates.

KNOWN BUGS

To see the list of known bugs, please take a look at our release
notes[2]. We also have a list of Lubuntu-specific bugs that have been
fixed since the release of 16.04.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Lubuntu is a good operating system for many old computers, but not for
all of them. Some computers have too little horsepower or memory. A
rule of thumb is that the computer should not be more than 10 years
old.

Memory (RAM)

For advanced internet services like Google+, YouTube, Google Drive,
and Facebook, your computer needs at least 1 GB of RAM. For local
programs like LibreOffice and simple browsing habits, your computer
needs at least 512 MB of RAM.

Processor (CPU)

The minimum specification for CPU is Pentium 4 or Pentium M or AMD K8.
Older processors are too slow and AMD K7 has problems with flash
video.

Graphics

Nvidia, AMD/ATI/Radeon and Intel work out of the box, or the system
can be tweaked to work fairly easily. You can get help at the Ubuntu
Forums[4]. With such graphics, or if you don't know, try the current
Lubuntu version.

HOW DO I GET SUPPORT?

Our support channel is #lubuntu on freenode IRC[5]. If you don’t have an IRC
client, click the link in the earlier sentence, type in a nickname,
press start, state your question and press Enter to speak. We also
have the lubuntu-users mailing list. You do not need to subscribe to
the mailing list to ask a question. Send an email to lubuntu-users AT
lists DOT ubuntu DOT com.

HOW DO I CONTRIBUTE?

We always need more help! If you would like to contribute, head over
to our Getting Involved page[6]. We need help with Reporting bugs,
Translations, Tests/QA, Code & patches, Artwork, Documentation, and
Marketing/Press. If you have any questions about contributing, please
join #lubuntu-devel on Freenode or email the lubuntu-devel mailing
list[7] at lubuntu-devel AT lists DOT ubuntu DOT com.

Re: [lubuntu-users] Installation using mini.iso for i386-16.04 freezes loading nic-firmware package

2016-07-19 Thread Simon Quigley
Hi Nio,

First of all, thank you for looking into this.

Can you personally confirm this bug? If not, could you please ask OP to file a
bug report?

In that bug report, please subscribe the Lubuntu Packages Team. We can then
determine whether or not this is a Lubuntu and/or Ubuntu Server bug as well.

I'm predicting that it doesn't affect Lubuntu and/or Ubuntu Server because the
mini.iso cuts down on a lot of different packages, but I could be wrong.

Looping the Ubuntu Server list in and leaving Nio's original email below just
in case someone is experiencing the same thing.

[lubuntu-users] [ANN] Lubuntu Bug Day

2016-07-14 Thread Simon Quigley
Greetings,

My name is Simon Quigley and I am a member of the Lubuntu Team. The
Lubuntu team is running a bug day on Tuesday, July 26, 2016. It’s a spin
of a hug day.

We will have an Ubuntu On Air session on Monday, July 25, 2016 from 19
to 20 UTC. I will give a presentation for the first half, then for the
second half, I will be joined by Walter Lapchynski and we will answer
questions provided to us over IRC. I strongly recommend that you either
attend the session or watch the archive, because we might answer a
question that you have. To attend, go to http://ubuntuonair.com/ during
the date/time I listed above.

What’s a Hug day?

From the Ubuntu Bug Day wiki page[1]:

"A Hug Day is a special day where the Ubuntu Community comes together
with a shared goal of triaging bugs for a specific package or set of
packages. Working together allows us to share knowledge and give some
much needed assistance to the Ubuntu Developers. The term Hug Day is a
spin on Bug Day; every time someone triages a bug, then someone else
should hug him/her. Why? This is a very special way for us to tell
everyone that we love contributions! And triaging bugs is a really big
contribution."

What bugs are we targeting?

The Lubuntu team has a team called the Lubuntu Packages Team[2]. It was
created to help track all the bugs related to Lubuntu, and it is a very
useful team for subscribing to all of the Lubuntu-related bugs. We would
like to ensure that this team stays up to date with all the Lubuntu
bugs, so we can make sure that our development team has an eye on them.
To do this, we need to go through the following steps:
 1. Find a bug that affects software preinstalled in Lubuntu.
 2. Triage[3] the bug accordingly, and if it still exists in a
reproducible state, subscribe the Lubuntu packages team.
 3. Add the bug to our known bugs list[4].

Where is the communication for this event happening?

Join the #lubuntu-devel channel on freenode, this is the Lubuntu team’s
IRC channel, and people will be around to help. If you don’t have an IRC
client, Kiwi IRC is a decent web client:
http://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.freenode.net/#lubuntu-devel

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to visit our IRC channel or
send me an email.

I hope to see you there!

[lubuntu-users] Fwd: Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) reaches End of Life on July 28 2016

2016-07-07 Thread Simon Quigley
This affects Lubuntu as well. Upgrade if you haven't already!

 Forwarded Message
Subject: Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) reaches End of Life on July 28 2016
Date: Thu, 7 Jul 2016 12:16:48 +
From: Adam Conrad
To: ubuntu-annou...@lists.ubuntu.com
CC: ubuntu-security-annou...@lists.ubuntu.com

Ubuntu announced its 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) release almost 9 months
ago, on October 22, 2015. As a non-LTS release, 15.10 has a 9-month
month support cycle and, as such, the support period is now nearing
its end and Ubuntu 15.10 will reach end of life on Thursday, July
28th. At that time, Ubuntu Security Notices will no longer include
information or updated packages for Ubuntu 15.10.

The supported upgrade path from Ubuntu 15.10 is via Ubuntu 16.04.
Instructions and caveats for the upgrade may be found at:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/XenialUpgrades

Ubuntu 16.04 continues to be actively supported with security updates
and select high-impact bug fixes. Announcements of security updates
for Ubuntu releases are sent to the ubuntu-security-announce mailing
list, information about which may be found at:

https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-security-announce

Since its launch in October 2004 Ubuntu has become one of the most
highly regarded Linux distributions with millions of users in homes,
schools, businesses and governments around the world. Ubuntu is Open
Source software, costs nothing to download, and users are free to
customise or alter their software in order to meet their needs.

On behalf of the Ubuntu Release Team,

Adam Conrad

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu Yakkety Yak Alpha 1 released!

Lubuntu Yakkety Yak Alpha 1 (soon to be 16.10) has been released!

We have a couple papercuts listed in the release notes[1], so please

creating BTRFS and XFS partitions using the desktop installer.

A big thanks to Brendan Perrine and Nio Wiklund for helping us test this
release.

Re: [lubuntu-users] ring any bells?

2016-06-01 Thread Simon Quigley
Hi Jack,

When you boot up, hold your Shift key down to get your GRUB menu.

Select: Advanced Options for Ubuntu
Select: Ubuntu, with Linux VERSION (recovery mode)

When you boot up:
Select: root

It should bring you to a root console.

DISCLAIMER: Be *very* careful as this doesn't have the usual restrictions and
you could *permanently* damage your system if you don't follow my instructions.

Next, type the following to remount / as a readable and writable partition:

mount -o remount,rw /

Then, if you had /home or anything else on separate partitions, run:

mount --all

Then, after that, run the following to ensure Lubuntu is installed:

apt update && apt install lubuntu-desktop

I haven't done this in a while, so I don't know if it has networking right
away, but to get networking, run:

ifup --all

If it prompts you to install some packages, great. That's your issue. You
reboot and it should be all fine from there. If not, follow up and let us know.

Good luck!

Re: [lubuntu-users] Unexpected system restart requested.

2016-05-28 Thread Simon Quigley
Greetings,

The difference between restarting after a regular software update and a release
update is that the latter usually requires a restart just to be safe. For
example, 14.04 -> 16.04 is two years of software updates. Open source software
really evolves in that timespan. So if it is just a few updates, I totally see
your point. But for something as massive as a release update, to be safe, you
should restart.

Hope that clears things up!
