Sterling,
I once approached a luthier to do this and he advised me that the fingerboard shape
and spacing was not able to be converted to Baroque tuning. I'm not sure whether this
was hard-sell to get a new new instrument, but it did result in a new instrument
anyway.
Regards,
Michael.

Since so many lutes were converted to so many
different configurations historicaly, this sort of
thing seems like a good way to learn more about lute

Dear lutenetters,
Here is a reply from a series of questions which I (privately) put to
Arto about converting a lute into a theorbo.
Since it is on a subject which should be of general interest, we have
decided to open it to you all.
I will be most interested in any contributions that you may
Thomas,
Your explanation is perfect (and I just saw some postings on the harp list
that I'll answer tomorrow after a night's sleep having to do with folk
songs). Song and lied are considered synonymous, but they aren't quite.
English is a lovely language because of its variety and range of express
Ah, so it wasn't an A lute...

Dear Ariel & all,
These are some of the most gorgeous lute songs in the repertoire. They are
astonishingly beautiful, and they have a unique feature; they are the only
pieces I know of, where the singer accompanies the lute! The lute parts
are these wonderful, dense polyphonic compositions,
Hi Jon,
I used the term (lute) "song" as opposed to "instrumental work". Off
course the psalm settings are song settings in the sense that
preexisting carols are put to the lute (and often with additional
diminuitions). This carols are based on religious texts (the psalms).
Usually I am insecure

Dear David,
Many many thanks for fixing it. I've now downloaded the last one, and they're
great. Last night I wrote a primitive bass line to the seven I already had,
and the pieces sound wonderful, and are splendid for practising, as well as
being lovely music. Thousand thanks once again for gi
Thomas,
You mention playing the music of the Regia Pietas, and you say you hadn't
thought of them as songs but instrumental works. I confess that I often use
the word song when referring to a piece of instrumental music, and do so by
choice. In some languages the word song is synonymous with story
Dear Ariel;
I will be performing ten of the psalms from "Regia Pietas" on
January 28 with a singer. You may have noticed the little asterisks
under the tablature. As explained in the editor's notes in the
introduction, these indicate points where the voice enter
Dear Ariel,
a while ago I played some of the music (together with a prelude) at
church services (one pastor even devoted the complete service to the
lute and it's role in the bible).
I never looked at them as songs (although the original melody of the
carol shines through and Vallet seems to mark

BTW, in a concert of early baroque music I heard last
year Lee Santana switched at the end of a piece from
theorbo (which he plays excellent IMHO) to a small A
lute (I think it was 12 course Dutch/French/English
style), just when the text was about something
heavenly, eternally. The effect was
