I'll just give you an update on the situation. Seems like I had really
bad luck yesterday, I guess being sick+stressed wasn't really good for
clear thinking. I guess that's why every single string I used snapped,
most of these strings were 0.50+, including the frets.
I've taken off

The 7 octave wont reach G4, tried that. And there are no fishing stores
here, so that's also not an option. The

12 gauge fluorocarbon fishing line is 0.33 mm and works ok for a top string -
it's an ok top A4 on my 54.5mm Renaissance guitar at 440, a bit tight but will
probably be usable as a G4 on a Renaissance lute.

Time to put the bridge and nut under a microscope- well, just a good
magnifying glass in a good light, & examine at all angles, cast shadows
around - you are trying to find any and all imperfections, sharp edges
or even hard angles and rough spots that can be smoothed down with very
fine nail
I hadn't read this reply properly but the octave on the 7th course is
going to be far too large a diameter to be used on the top course. If
you have an octave on the 4th course, that would be OK.
I don't mean to sound patronizing but it really is a good idea to have a
stock of spare top
ok...after trying several different strings, taken from the 7 course
and fret gut, I came to the conclusion that there's something wrong
with the lute today. For some reason it refuses to reach G4 without
snapping the strings.

If you're lucky and the broken string is still long enough when it
stretches to extend between the nut and the bridge, then you could try
tying another string to it using a fisherman's knot so as to be able to
wind it around the peg. Be careful to ease the knot over the nut so as
Of course you shouldn't use the octave of the seventh. It could probably only
be tuned to G3.
An alternative is to tune it to G3 and play it like a theorbo with the top
string down an octave.
