preview-latex.tar file but am not clear as to where it should be
installed.
LyX doesn't need the whole thing. Here I have:

What platform? There's a bit of an adventure with exporting on Windows,
depending on how you opened the file (file menu v. double-clicking the
file icon).

You indicated elsewhere you're using MiKTeX on Win XP, correct? In that
case, send the tar file to the bit recycler, then use
