Lyx setup for ASA style (Americal Sociological Associoation)

2011-11-03 Thread Dave

Dear all,

I would love to use Lyx for my Phd thesis
and academic papers but I am close to giving up
as I don't manage to adapt it to my needs.
I would like to use Lyx in combination with
Bibdesk or Zotero, and use an
ASA document style (American Sociological Association).
This includes in-text references (e.g. (Giddens:22)),
the bibliography formatting, the overall text structure etc.
I was neither able to find appropriate document templates
nor to adapt the existing ones. Is there any not-too-difficult way of
setting up Lyx for the ASA style without diving into the details of Latex?
I am using Mac OS 10.7.2 and Lyx 2.0.1.

Thanking you,

David

A4 paper in tufte book class

Is there a way to use A4 paper in Tufte book class? The Tufte-LaTeX def file is

Looking at the output it seems related to configuring user directory.
 LyX: reconfiguring user directory
seems to indicate it is re-configuring on every run - this makes me
think configuring is not successful.

Also, if i run Tools -TeX Information all classes are listed and

Kenedy,
You are clearly in the hands of experts here, so I shall not try to
muddle the water.
However, after several years of using Miktex on Windows, I have switched
to TexLive,
which seems to be the general trend. I use Texlive on Linux, and wanted
to have the same Latex system on both

Windows and Linux (Ubuntu).
In my experience, TexLive is easier to maintain (upgrade). In addition,
after you install it (on Windows),

you can click Start/Run:
tlmgr gui
and see a list of all the Latex packages with a short description of
what each one does, plus some other information about the package. You
can double click on the package name and get a longer description.
You might consider trying that. Unlike the Republicans and Democrats in
Congress,
TexLive and MikTex can coexist and function in the same system, and Lyx
can use either.

I hope this is helpful--

Probably none of these are in the paths TeX is searching. You'll need to
put it in one of those directories and then run texhash. Run e.g.
kpsewhich article.cls to see where that one lives, and put svmono.cls
in a similar location. Or you can create a local TeX tree, e.g., at
$HOME/texmf/. Note that it has to have the same structure as the main
TeX tree. E.g., LaTeX stuff would be below $HOME/texmf/tex/latex/.

Flex-insets in Math mode

2011-11-03 Thread Murat Yildizoglu
Hello,

I have waited a little bit before harassing you again with my Sage
extension problem.

Concerning the possibility of including Sage commands in the math mode, I
have not found any solution.

Is there a Flex-inset type that can be inserted in a math box, without
being interpreted before the compilation of the document by
pdflatex+Sage+pdflatex? When I insert my \sage{} instruction in a math
expression, Lyx tries to interpret what is inside, even if I have set the
inset as Passtrough=1.

I know that I can do it using an ERT but I will have to type the complete
expression in the ERt too in this case :-( (well, I know that I could type
it in a math box and then copy and paste in the ERT, but I cannot use the
conveniences of Lyx for displayed equations and equation sets even in this
case).

While there is no direct way of doing that in lyx, there are useful
alternatives. My favourite is the XY-pic package
(http://www.tug.org/applications/Xy-pic/), which is useful for all
kinds of diagrams.

To use it you need to install XY-pic (the 'xy' latex package), and in
LyX, in the preamble (Documents-Settings-LaTeX preamble) you should
write

\usepackage[all]{xy}

\newcommand{\pd}[2]{\frac{\partial #1}{\partial #2}} %this line is
only for your specific diagram

Then in the body, you create an ERT box (Ctrl-L) and inside you can
put the following:

\[
\xymatrix{
 z \ar@{-}[dll]_{\pd{z}{x}} \ar@{-}[drr]^{\pd{z}{y}} \\
   x \ar@{-}[dl]_{\pd{x}{s}} \ar@{-}[dr]^{\pd{x}{t}} y
\ar@{-}[dl]_{\pd{y}{s}} \ar@{-}[dr]^{\pd{y}{t}}\\
s t s t \\
}
\]

A first look at this might seem daunting, but once you read the xy
user's guide it will seem quite straight-forward.

Thanks for the solution! I'm not sure if the author of that document
can see this email, so I guess you'd better cc Jeff or Dave.

As for the batch file, I mentioned this once to JMarc, and I do not if
this is a good solution, because if the user knows how to modify PATH,
he/she does not need the Rweave.bat trick. So which way is better to
go? Teach Windows users PATH or use the batch files to find R
automatically? Or let LyX borrow the idea of the batch file as a part
of its configuration? e.g. when (re)configuring LyX, the path to
Rscript.exe will be searched automatically.

Lualatex won't work on most Linux distributions, since they ship
outdated version of TL (and some other packages), and don't allow
user-space updating of packages. If you're on Windows, you're best bet
is to update your packages to their latest version, select 'use
non-tex fonts' in Doc Settings Fonts, and cross your fingers.

As far as I'm concerned best is to properly document PATH tweaks for

To use it you need to install XY-pic (the 'xy' latex package), and in
LyX, in the preamble (Documents-Settings-LaTeX preamble) you should
write

\usepackage[all]{xy}

\newcommand{\pd}[2]{\frac{\partial #1}{\partial #2}} %this line is
only for your specific diagram

Then in the body, you create an ERT box (Ctrl-L) and inside you can
put the following:

\[
\xymatrix{

   x \ar@{-}[dl]_{\pd{x}{s}} \ar@{-}[dr]^{\pd{x}{t}} y
\ar@{-}[dl]_{\pd{y}{s}} \ar@{-}[dr]^{\pd{y}{t}}\\

A first look at this might seem daunting, but once you read the xy

 Thanks for the reply, Richard!

The good news is: I managed to adapt the standard
 templates using some \bibpunct[:]{(}{)}{,}{a}{}{;}
commands and other local adjustments. This is sufficient
for me to start working and to stick to Lyx after
all. I am sure more formatting issues will come up in
the course of my work and who knows, maybe be
then I will be able to write a whole new class for the
 ASA document style.

And the best thing is: If you change your mind about these formatting
issues, you can change it all around again later just as easily.

Lualatex won't work on most Linux distributions, since they ship

is to update your packages to their latest version, select 'use

Lyx setup for ASA style (Americal Sociological Associoation)

2011-11-03 Thread Dave

Dear all,

I would love to use Lyx for my Phd thesis
and academic papers but I am close to giving up
as I don't manage to adapt it to my needs.
I would like to use Lyx in combination with
Bibdesk or Zotero, and use an
ASA document style (American Sociological Association).
This includes in-text references (e.g. "(Giddens:22)"),
the bibliography formatting, the overall text structure etc.

Are you referring to the the config.log created in the build process?

If so I did not build. I installed via pacman (ArchLinux package manager).
If not where would I find this log?

Looking at the output it seems related to configuring user directory.
>> LyX: reconfiguring user directory
seems to indicate it is re-configuring on every run - this makes me
think configuring is not successful.

Also, if i run "Tools -TeX Information" all classes are listed and
paths are correct.

Kenedy,
You are clearly in the hands of experts here, so I shall not try to

Run e.g.
"kpsewhich article.cls" to see where that one lives, and put svmono.cls
in a similar location.

To use it you need to install XY-pic (the 'xy' latex package), and in
LyX, in the preamble (Documents->Settings->LaTeX preamble) you should
write

\usepackage[all]{xy}

\newcommand{\pd}[2]{\frac{\partial #1}{\partial #2}} %this line is
only for your specific diagram

Then in the body, you create an ERT box (Ctrl-L) and inside you can
put the following:

\[
\xymatrix{
  & & & z \ar@{-}[dll]_{\pd{z}{x}} \ar@{-}[drr]^{\pd{z}{y}} & & & \\
  & x \ar@{-}[dl]_{\pd{x}{s}} \ar@{-}[dr]^{\pd{x}{t}} & & & & y
\ar@{-}[dl]_{\pd{y}{s}} \ar@{-}[dr]^{\pd{y}{t}} & \\
s & & t & & s & & t \\
}

Yihui

Thanks for the reply, Richard!

The good news is: I managed to adapt the standard
templates using some "\bibpunct[:]{(}{)}{,}{a}{}{;}"
commands and other local adjustments. This is sufficient
for me to start working and to stick to Lyx after
all. I am sure more formatting issues will come up in
the course of my work and who knows, maybe be
then I will be able to write a whole new class for the
ASA document style.

Best, David

And the best thing is: If you change your mind about these formatting
issues, you can change it all around again later just as easily.

Hi Paul,

Are you writing a calculus book? I've been looking for a book to
refresh my memory of calculus, and if your book uses lots of diagrams,
that's a good thing. Where can your book be purchased?

Thanks

Lualatex won't work on most Linux distributions, since they ship
outdated version of TL (and some other packages), and don't allow
user-space updating of packages. If you're on Windows, you're best bet
is to update your packages to their latest version, select 'use
non-tex fonts' in Doc Settings > Fonts, and cross your fingers.

As far as I'm concerned best is to properly document PATH tweaks for
Sweave users on Windows. Batch tricks may work in one version, but not
in the next one. And one of the best things about LyX is that it keeps
things transparent; if it could, and it certainly seems so, a
"black-box" trick should be avoided.
