Using the Memoir class with a two-column document, and inserting a box
(simple frame, page breaks), how can the background of the box be made
shaded?

Hello,
 I have same problem when I change font size.
I found the part that gave the error in a table. I hidden it inside a note and 
I change the font size without error. But every time I pull the table of the 
note, the error appears.

Unbroken long URL's within endnotes

Hi LyXers,

back on February I've used to have, within a "scrbook" document, many long 
URL's (using the URL inset) inside endnotes (using the "\theendnotes" in the 
end of the document). For example:

Except in a few cases, most URL's, inside endnotes, where "properly" line-
broken. Specifically, they where broken also in "/" occurrences. In addition, 
they appeared with a monospace(d) font, colored blue (due to urlcolor=blue) as 
defined and expected and where clickable to lauch the preferred web-browser.

Now, the last days I am struggling to get the same output without any success. 
They appear unbroken, black and not "clickable". What has been changed since?


I've tried, without success, the following:

  - the option "hyphens" (in the documentclass options), as well as the entry 
"\PassOptionsToPackage{hyphens}{url}\usepackage{hyperref}" in the Preamble % 


  - "Break links over lines" checkin in Document > Settings > PDF Properties > 
Hyperlinks (although this is related to "href"s?)

  - \renewcommand{\UrlBreaks}

You might try with the versions from Debian/testing instead of
Debian/stable.

You can download them from the "Debian package search" and install "by hand"
(with dpkg).

Another way to do this is to change /etc/apt/sources.list to use the "testing"
sources, e.g.

# stable (commented out)
# deb http://ftp.tu-chemnitz.de/pub/linux/debian/debian/ stable main contrib 
non-free
# deb-src http://ftp.tu-chemnitz.de/pub/linux/debian/debian/ stable main

This might also give you a new version of lilypond. Maybe even solve 4-.

Beware: testing is not stable - Mixing packages works in many cases but
might also fail. 

Also, if you have some "auto-update" feature activated, this will try to
bring everything up to the newest version -- leading to many packages update
to "testing" versions. OTOH, with "auto-update" disabled, this will
conveniently ensure the required packages are installed in the required
versions (if the version info on the requiring package is complete and
correct).

If happen to need this many times and you know the name of the target
language, you can use

Alt x   % opens minbuffer/command line
language english% or whatever language you need

And the second time
Alt x
Up  % the minibuffer remembers the command.


That said, I wish there were an LFUN for 

language reset % set to main document language

which I could bind to a key.

There is easier. When a document contains two languages or more, it
suffices to c-menu > language > select language.

Another lyx-produced book

Dear all,

in the wake of Richard's announcement, here is another one. The book "A
Search for a Theory of Cognition," which I edited with Francesco Bianchini,
has just come out with Rodopi:

I produced book entirely in Lyx, to Rodopi's specs. They printed it from
the pdf file. I used memoir as base class, and customized it. References
were done with biblatex (+biber), with a customized style. Customizing the
memoir and biblatex took quite a bit of effort, since Rodopi's specs were
for Microsoft Word. I ended up buyiing myself a typographer ruler and
working from an actual book in the VIBS series.

Lyx is mentioned in the acknowledgments. Unfortunately the acknowledgments
page is not among those available on Amazon's free preview.

  Well, I guess it's old news here, but Springer published my book,
"Quantifying Environmental Impact Assessments Using Fuzzy Logic", in 2005. I
used Spriger's mono class and they provided a TeXpert (who told me to use
\ldots rather than \textellipsis; shrug). I sent the PDF along with all
files LyX and LaTeX produce. It was camera-ready but they added 4 pages at
the front with all the required cateloging and other publication data.

  I selected LyX and the Palatino typeface after reading Bruce Momjian's
PostgreSQL book that he wrote using LyX. Bruce answered many questions for
me that made the writing tool decision easy.

LyX can break URLs, but are often not good at it. When I get
such problems, I often put the URL on a line of its own.
That tends to work, and separating out a big URL is often

such paragraphs, because monospace is supposedly mostly used
for computer code and similiar cases where positioning
may be more important than automatic line breaking.

But this can be changed. Some preamble trickery can
tell LaTeX to hyphenate monospaced text too, and then
it works very well for normal text.

It is supposed to do that. Text written in Hungarian remains Hungarian 
when inserted into an English document.



This occurs even if there is no any foreign (that is Hungarian language 
specific character) in the pasted text. It also occurs if the paste 
special/plain text method is used.



The reason for marking it Hungarian is not merely to take care of 
special characters. If a line break fall inside the Hungarian text, then 
Hungarian hyphenation is needed there. English hyphenation rules
may fail to break up Hungarian words, leading to words sticking into the 
margin. Or even split words in ways that look silly. Hungarian 
hyphenation will avoid breaking up words in a bad way. (At least in

some languages, bad breaking of certain words could create
funny or embarassing half-words. You don't want to hyphenate
the english word "Scunthorpe" after the "S", for example. Language
specific hyphenation support avoids these things.)

Also, spell checking will honor the language setting.


As the codes go into the lyx source code there is no way to change them
or get rid of them, while they are absolutely unnecessary in the document.


If the language setting is wrong, i.e. the text pasted do not contain 
Hungarian language, do this:


1. Select the text
2. Use the Edit->Text Style dialog
3. Revert language
After this, the pasted section is in "document" language. In this case, 
English.


If you are merely irritated by the blue underline, lobby for a less
visible language indicator. :-)

selection disappears

Hi,

I'm using lyx 2.0.0 on ubuntu 11.10 and gnome 3. Since the last upgrade,
if I select some text, the selection disappears after a short time
(0.1-3 seconds).

For ex. after selecting a table it is often impossible to Cut'n Paste
it. Even if I use shortcuts.

I had to do something similar, though OUP sent me their design
specification, so I didn't actually have to measure things. I DID have
to hold up pages printed from my implementation to a light, with one
printed from their specification manual behind it, to see if they lined
up correctly.

Sounds like a conflict with some clipboard manager. We've seen several
of these.

Boy, do I know that drill! I am lucky that it never rains in Texas, as I
needed all the sunlight I could get. For a few days I had several pages of
the actual book I was using as a  design reference permanently taped to my
kitchen's windows, so I could easily check my latex output against them.

Is there a recommended procedure for updating from 2.0.0? I have made
some customizations (shortcuts, added modules, etc.) that I would like
to retain if possible.

Congratulations, indeed.

My last book was also philosophy at OUP, and my experience was very
good as well. After sending them the manuscript in PDF, they were
impressed enough with its appearance that they asked me if I wanted to
typeset the book. I declined (not wanting to go to the trouble of all
the tweaking you did); they did accept a LaTeX version, which I
believe they tweaked in order to typeset it. In any case, another
testament to LyX/LaTeX. Thanks again to the developers, to whom I'm
grateful every day.
