Re: debian and the latex file structure

2001-09-10 Thread Baruch Even

First, if you'll go to http://packages.debian.org you can see at the
bottom a form to search for file names in packages, specifically for
a4.sty you can find that tetex-extra includes a4.sty, just
apt-get install tetex-extra
and you'll be fine.

.dtx and .ins are the latex "package", you need to run it through latex
and they will produce the .sty file and anything else necessary.

I suspect that this is a problem with the EPS file. What
program have you used to generate it? Maybe it is a
postscript file, not actually EPS.

If it is a bitmapped image and you have the original (.png or .tiff,
for example) try converting it to EPS using some other program.

2001-09-10 Thread Alexis Wiasmitinow

Hi

if I want to make a A4-small margins format, lyx (or latex) says "file a4.sty
not found". I know from the latex configuration file that the package is not
installed. so I tried to get it from ctan.tug.org but there is only a
"a4.dtx" and a "a4.ins" file.
so where do I get the a4.sty file?

I got lyx from debian by apt-get, and so I have no idea what is the system
between all the folders I have in my /usr/share/texmf directory.
so what has to be put where?

what is the debian package with a4.sty in it?
the geometry package would also be nice, but my problems are the same than
above...

I'm actually running a Cooker system so I am beyond 8.0 (and closer to 8.1).
In any case, I haven't even tried printing because the gv image clearly show
me that the right side of the table is way too close to the right page margin
- the printer will clip it and cannot print that close to the margin.

problems with eps and lyx 1.1.6fix3 (and fix1)

2001-09-10 Thread Praedor Tempus

I am having problems with lyx 1.1.6 fix3 and and eps file.

I open a new document, type in "Table 1a" and then select Insert ->Figure and
then I have tried with both eps and inlined eps for an eps file I generated.
It displays just fine IN lyx but if I try to view a preview page with dvi,
pdf, or ps, all I see is the text I typed: Table 1a. No inserted table eps
file.

Furthermore, with previewing a ps file in gv, it invariably indicates that
there are 3 pages, the first page simply displays "Table 1a" which I entered
but there is nothing on any of the 3 pages - and I get an error window for
ghostview with a totally gibberish error, with all the text rapidly rendering
on top of itself.

Nothing like this happens with dvi or pdf, just the blank page with the text
I entered.

I upgraded to fix3 from fix1 when I ran into this but it remains the same.

Why would it display fine IN lyx but trying to render it for printing or
display totally wrecks it?

I use jpilot for a Palm m100(standard in Mandrake, otherwise google will
get it). Works great, has a very nice "desktop" interface, and does one
thing Palm's own software doesn't do: a true 100% backup of the handheld.
It has already saved me a lot of grief after I inadvertedly ran out of
batteries once. I don't know if it will work with the HandEra, give it a
try.

By the way, I wish you good luck on what you want to do with Lyx and
handheld editing, but I'm not very optimistic. Most document converters are
somewhat imperfect, and trying to go back and forth between two different
formats is typically a recipe for disaster. In most cases you can get away
with one conversion, but doing Lyx->Other_format->Editing->Lyx I suspect is
*very* likely to give you lots of grief. Again, good luck, and maybe drop a
line when you are further ahead letting us know if you got it to work
without as a real day to day system.

Fernando.

Hello, and my first problem.

2001-09-10 Thread Ben Logan

Hi. I've had LyX around for awhile now, but am still a newbie at
using it. Until the other day, I didn't really have any need to write
anything. Now I am attempting to write a tutorial for the PHP
language, and have run into a few problems. Sorry for the
not-so-descriptive subject, but I couldn't figure out the best way to
summarize my problem. :) My version of LyX is 1.1.6fix2-1 (installed
via RPM), and I'm running it on Redhat 7.1. Also, I know nothing
about LaTeX.

In order to conserve list bandwidth, I uploaded my (23k) document to my
website, so please retrieve it from
http://cyclist.newcreature.org/phptut.lyx

First of all, when I export it as HTML I get the following error:

/usr/bin/nsgmls:0:329:5:E: end tag for element "TAG" which is not open

It doesn't abort on the error. I.e., the html does get
generated. However, when I first started I was using the "DocBook
Article" layout instead of the "LinuxDoc Article" one and I think it
was aborting with that layout...can't remember for sure.

The other problems occur in section "4.1 Arithmatic Operators". The
snippet of PHP code in the "code" paragraph environment wraps in the
output even thought the lines aren't too long, and don't wrap within
LyX. Some of the shorter lines wrap while longer ones don't!

The last problem occurs in the next-to-last paragraph. There is a
mysterious line break between "10%3" and "is 1" in the output even
though LyX doesn't show one.

I would greatly appreciate any help,
Ben Logan

HFill with leading periods?

2001-09-10 Thread Niklaus Giger

I'am using LyX now for about a year and I still like it very much. I helped
my wife to write a 35 page long paper for her diploma.

Thanks to all the developers and specially to Herbert Voss and his very
helpful compendium of useful LaTeX and LyX tricks!!

But I have a small problem which I could not yet solve and for which I didn't
find any help on the web.

Sometimes I would like to have "HFill with periods". Sometimes (in other
programs) also called "tabs with leading character" e.g. {.,-}.

E.g. my line should look like
Some text ...After HFILL with period

I have found in my "A guide to LaTeX" the TeX-function \dotfill which does
the job for me.

Is there a LyX-way to use this feature (except the trivial solution to insert
it using the TeX-style)? (I fear that the LaTeX-solution is not very
appealing to newbie's).

Two possible solutions.

1. If you want to keep your column widths the same and have the rest of
the table printed below (usually ugly), right-click on your table and
select Lontable.

2. Set the column width -- right click, click the Column/row tab and
enter your desired width in the Width box. Remember you need to specify
the units, e.g. "3cm".

You're a genius Dekel! I used your coloration method to do EXACTLY what's
needed in my book. Each color is a character style, and it leaves its own
name in the .lyx file for future parsing and easy modification.

So red is the "steps" character style, and magenta is the "chapters"
character style, and I can change all instances with a single change to the
stuff inside the preamble/endpreamble in my .layout file. The one significant
change to your example was the inclusion of a third ifthenelse{}{} so that #2
gets printed if it's not red or magenta.

You might think it would be confusing remembering red is steps and magenta is
Chapters, but I'll put a note on my monitor to remember, and maybe a comment
in the document.

Thank you very much. This fixed a BIG problem for me.

\usepackage{ifthen}
\renewcommand{\textcolor}[2]{%
\ifthenelse{\equal{#1}{red}}{{\LARGE\textsf{#2}}}{}% Steps
\ifthenelse{\equal{#1}{magenta}}{{\LARGE\textit{\textsf{#2{}% Chapters
\ifthenelse{\equal{#1}{magenta}\or\equal{#1}{red}}{}{#2}% fallthrough
}

By the way, if \textsf is sans, and \textbf is bold, anyone know how to make
underline?

Thanks

Steve

I wanted something more comprehensive as I am going to be doing a lot more
work with the machine on the road. Basically, I am treating this as a laptop
instead of getting a laptop. I know, may be a bit strange to do something
like that, but the power and functionality for what I need is there, and the
expense is significantly less. So, it seem(s) appropriate to me.

Yeah, I thought WordSmith was using JDoc, but as it turns out, it is using
the normal doc format.

Yeah, I was thinking about doing something with CVS, but hadn't thought it
all the way through yet. Glad to see that I am on the right track there.

> I'm going to write some helper apps when I need them, for now I just

Makefile's would be a good way to handle the conversion for now. But, I
think having a set of tools, or better a "wrapper" application for this might
be more useful. Should be something that even I could work on once I have
the right tools in place.

That is the problem that I was trying to get around. When I am writing, I
don't really want to have all of the codes being displayed, that's the reason
that I use LyX for writing, instead of using a TeX or LaTeX front end with
emacs or vi.

> I don't use it to change major parts of the file, only to add things
> or make adjustments to the content; leaving the formatting pretty much
> alone until I get back home.

This is the other part for me. I work on _lots_ of documents, and make heavy
edits to them on a very frequent basis... That can mean chaning the
structure, or formatting, etc. Or, even more so, I end up creating a lot of
documents. So, the more transparent the markup is, the better for me.

I was thinking that I can keep pretty easily to a standard template, just
enough to mark headings and outlines, that's the major stuff that I need. I
don't need to do diagrams, floats or tables (well, maybe an occasional
table).

As I look more at things here, it seems that WordSmith uses RTF for it's
conversion layer. That means that with the right interface from LyX to RTF
it should be possible to have a template that preserves the structural
formatting. That would make it much easier to convert back and forth between
LyX and WordSmith.

There are quite a few tools that do things like SGML<->RTF conversion, and
other formats. Will just have to investigate them some more.

But, I really, really, like the idea of using CVS to manage the files. The
major trick then remains to move from CVS->WordSmith and back.

Question: what software are you using to sync your HandEra under Linux? I've
been trying to use KPilot, but it's been a pain (doable, but a real pain).

Thanks for the input!

No. This is one of the main missing features of LyX, but there are plans to
add it soon.

In the meantime, you can use the following hack:
Use colors for character styles, and put \usepackage{mystyles} in the preamble
(you can put it in the layout file), where mystyles.sty is something like

\usepackage{ifthen}
\renewcommand{\textcolor}[2]{%
\ifthenelse{\equal{#1}{red}}{\textit{#2}}{}%
\ifthenelse{\equal{#1}{green}}{\textbf{#2}}{}%
}

It seems that you have installed Cygwin's tetex package (which is not
configured and therefore not usable). So any DOS program will find latex.exe
from the MikTex package but any Cygwin program (like Lyx) will find
/usr/bin/latex.exe because all internal pathes in Cygwin are in front of
$PATH!

So uninstall the tetex package this way:
