There are two attempts to make TeX behave with UTF-8 (aside from Omega,
which IMHO still not fully mature):

- LaTeX3 development team created support for UTF-8 for inputenc,
- Petr Ol\v{s}\'ak (yes, he is my fellow Czech) extended his encTeX to
UTF-8 (i.e., it is support for UTF-8 on the level of input/output
processor of TeX, so everything works as it should). His webpage is
  petr.olsak.net/enctex.html (previous version -- w/o UTF-8 -- was
described in his article for Tugboat, which should be available on
www.tex.org and if I am not mistaken also on
  ftp://math.feld.cvut.cz/pub/olsak/enctex/encdoc.pdf).

However, both of these attempts are very bleeding edge of development.
encTeX should be part of the next web2c (promise made in February and
AFAIK there is still not new release), and I am not quite sure whether
UTF-8 support for inputenc made it to new LaTeX yet. So I am afraid, we
cannot much rely on it.

Hello David,

Nice to hear from you again :)

David My home machine, running a current image of debian-testing, has
David a problem with some fonts being invisible under LyX. For
David example, when I go to the File - Save As menu, the box with
David the filename in it is blank. I can place the cursor at various
David spots in the box, so the characters are there, they are just
David invisible. I can type, and the changes show up on the filename
David when I save, for example. Same thing in, say, the Layout -
David Document - Margins. I can set the margins, but I cannot see
David what I type.

Xforms tends to do that when the box in which the text should go is
not tall enough. We had a tightening of the dialogs in 1.3, and some
people with unusual dpi settings see this problem. The person who
knows about that and may be able to help is Rob Lahaye.

David I tried fiddling with the background colors to no avail.

It is not a problem of colors. The text is not there.

optional arguments in math. how to?

2003-07-10 Thread Amir Seginer
Hello,

I've just been trying use the command \xrightarrow with it optional
argument, e.g.

\[ leftside \xright[down]{up} rightside \]

Is it possible to do this (and in general use optional arguments in
math/display mode)? I've tried writing it as regular text (without the
\[ and \]) and turning it to a math/display mode. I've also tried to
insert it manually in the .lyx file, but to no avail.

I did manage to use it in an ERT box, but I would rather not write the
whole equation that way.

If it is indeed imposible, might it be better if there was an option
within math mode to enter pure latex, without Lyx helping in the
middle. Something like the ERT box in the regular text. I think (if I
remember correctly) that it was possible in earlier version 1.1.6 (or so).

Thanks for any help,

Amir.

P.S.

I'm using Lyx 1.2.1 (Xforms)

No it doesn't (for me), the moment I press [ to start the optional

something in which LyX will not interfere (like in the ERT box in

this these are bugs or a feautres.

1) In the program menubar (File, Edit, Insert, Layout...) when i select a tab (for
example: Edit) and then try to select the next tab (in this case: Insert)
the mouse pointer becomes a double arrow pointing right ( something like = ) and when
i left-click, nothing happens.
It seems like i must click in some certain positions of the tab to select it (bottom
right?)
I'm using KDE 2.2.2 with QT 2.3.1 (from debian testing).

as double clicking the .exe. Making a shortcut with the -dbg 3
switch also doesn't work (It has read the -dbg 3 switch as the helpful
 shell window appears).

Well, that's unusually peculiar, even by Windows standards. You're
saying that 'lyx -dbg 3' on a command line works (meaning latex runs when
you View-DVI), but lyx on a command line (without the arguments) can't
get latex to run properly?

For the shortcut, did you put the '-dbg 3' on the target line of the
shortcut ('path\lyx.exe -dbg 3' all on one line)? And does the shortcut
start in the same directory in which you were opening the command window?
(Not that I think that would account for the systems, but when fishing I
favor a big net.)

The shortcut (with the debug options) behaving differently from the
command line (with debug options) might suggest either a difference in
the environment variables the two are using or a difference in what
account is running the program (assuming you're in a multiuser version of
Windows that cares about user accounts -- I don't think you specified
your OS version), but that would not explain why lyx on the command line
without debug options would fail. The debug options making a difference
on the command line might mean that something is missing (or ignored) in
the environment that is being supplied internally (or paid attention to)
in debug mode, but that wouldn't explain the shortcut failing.

Best bet is probably to ask Ruurd Reitsma about it.

What happens if you make shortcut run a batch file that starts LyX in
debug mode? Any joy on the viewing?

In LyX 1.3.x, you type \xrightarrow and then press space.

No it doesn't (for me), the moment I press [ to start the optional

something in which LyX will not interfere (like in the ERT box in

Bad Interface?

2003-07-10 Thread Francesco Orsenigo

Lyx seems to behave in a strange and counter-intuitive manner, i can't figure out if
this these are bugs or a feautres.

2) When i click File-Revert, i'm asked if i want to save the modified file first!
This is useless if not dangerous!

I'm using Lyx 1.3.2.

Hope it helps (and that this is the correct list where to post it)

I tried from the command line lyx -dbg

as double clicking the .exe.

Xforms tends to do that when the box in which the text should go is

optional arguments in math.

If it is indeed imposible, might it be better if there was an option
within math mode to enter pure latex, without Lyx "helping" in the
middle. Something like the ERT box in the regular text. I think (if I
remember correctly) that it was possible in earlier version 1.1.6 (or so).

Thanks for any help,

P.S.

Thanks for the quick answer

\xrightarrow is supported 'natively'.

Just make sure to enable AMS.
The problem is the optional argument, not just using \xrightarrow

If it is indeed imposible, might it be better if there was an option
within math mode to enter pure latex, without Lyx "helping" in the
middle.

Even that work.
No it doesn't (for me), the moment I press "[" to start the optional
argument I'm out of LaTeX mode and into LyX's math mode. I would like
something in which LyX will not "interfere" (like in the ERT box in
plain text after pressing ctrl-L) - This should be used only for special
cases. The use of "\" to turn on math-mode is good (and much more
convenient) for 99.99% of the cases.

I'm using Lyx 1.2.1 (Xforms)

Brr... I think it should work there, too, but I've not checked.
Especially the native xrightarrow support might be a 1.3.x feature.
Not the optional argument (just the text above the arrow).

Thanks again,

Amir.

P.S.

1.3.x is not exactly an option, I would like to have compatibilty with
the university computer.

What happens if you simply write a '[' there? What does the exported
.tex look like? What the is the "problem"?

Yes, and what's wrong with that? You write [] in "LyX's math mode".

Toolbars/Modification for Aqua

Bad Interface?

2003-07-10 Thread Francesco Orsenigo

Lyx seems to behave in a strange and counter-intuitive manner, i can't figure out if
this these are bugs or a feautres.

1) In the program menubar (File, Edit, Insert, Layout...) when i select a tab (for
example: Edit) and then try to select the next tab (in this case: Insert)
the mouse pointer becomes a double arrow pointing right ( something like => ) and when
i left-click, nothing happens.
It seems like i must click in some certain positions of the tab to select it (bottom
right?)
I'm using KDE 2.2.2 with QT 2.3.1 (from debian testing).

2) When i click File->Revert, i'm asked if i want to save the modified file first!
This is useless if not dangerous!

I'm using Lyx 1.3.2.

Hope it helps (and that this is the correct list where to post it)

Simply replace the icons in the lyx installation with your own ones ...

You're actually using the xforms frontend. I suggest using the Qt one
instead.

The only solution for lyx 1.2 is to put
  \let\myrightarrow=\xrightarrow
in the preamble, and then use \myrightarrow in the document.

It is an _official_ standard, but I believe that most people use Qt

Set $QTDIR correctly, and use --with-frontend=qt. You may need to use
--with-qt-includes/libs ..

Well, that's unusually peculiar, even by Windows standards. You're
saying that 'lyx -dbg 3' on a command line works (meaning latex runs when
you View->DVI), but lyx on a command line (without the arguments) can't
get latex to run properly?

For the shortcut, did you put the '-dbg 3' on the "target" line of the
shortcut ('path\lyx.exe -dbg 3' all on one line)?

Shortening down TOC

2003-07-10 Thread Niklas Huldén
Hi!

Is there any way to shorten down a TOC which contains loads of
subsubsections
in an "oldfashioned" way like this:

Chapter 1..1
Section 1.12
  Subsection 1.1.1.3
   Coins 4, Groins 5, Fever 7,
   Wars 8, Platypus 11
Subsection 1.212

  and so on

I have studied the tocloft package but i cant find a solution there.
I know I could manipulate the .toc-file by hand, but then I would have
to change all the pagenumbers also :(

many thanks!

LyX with LaTeX Error

2003-07-10 Thread Alex S.
Howdy, (new to the list - and a new user of LyX - great program btw!)

I'm having a problem including any sort of graphics in a document. They
add just fine, but when I go to export or view the document (DVI, etc.),
I get a dialog box "There were errors during the LaTeX run.", and when I
double click on the error, I get:

"LaTeX Error: Unknown option 'ln' for package 'graphics'. \if
[EMAIL PROTECTED] The option 'ln' was not declared in package 'graphics',
perhaps you misspelled its name. Try typing to proceed."

I know this is a LaTeX error, but it's complaining about the code LyX
sends it. I've since reinstalled teTeX, and LyX, and still no help. I
get this error on a *new* document, with nothing but an image it in.
I've tried all sorts of images (eps, png, jpg, etc.) and still get it.

I'm at a loss of what it could be. Any tips on how to solve this
problem? I really need figures in my paper. Thanks.

latex --version, gives TeX version 3.14159, kpathsea version 3.3.1;
LaTeX configuration does find "graphicx" package.
