AFAIK there is no out-of-the-box solution (aka some magic option) for this kind of problem that really works. If the space is just enough for an orphan/widow, but to big to be let empty, well what should LaTeX possibly do about it? Space is enough for 3 or more lines. No orphan/widow involved. Only a big blank space. IMHO this is best solved by manual fine-tuning at the very end: - I usually start with altering the size of figures and floats on the pages before the problem page. Make them slightly smaller so that an extra line would fit on the problem page or bigger, so that the empty space no longer looks that empty. - If that doesn't help, I rephrase the text so that an extra line of the otherwise orphan/widow paragraph would fit on the page. - As a last resort, if space is a real problem because I have a page limit, I start to spread negative \vspaces at certain positions. Ops, I forgot the attachment.
Ok, after more experimentation with the package I discovered that you need
to create an appendices environment then all of the package options are
correctly used. So, directly after the 'start appendix here' command you
need to insert ERT\begin{appendices} and after all of your appendix material
an ERT\end{appendices} just like an environment.
I've attached a minimal example that changes the appendix style from:
A Title
to
Appendix A Title
in both the document and the toc.
I think it would be nice to post this info on the wiki (although I've never
personally posted anything), since this is the second time I've asked this
question and not received a response. Or is this just not very important to
the majority of people (hence no need to post to the wiki)? I don't know. I
just think it is good info, since the documentation isn't necessary clear
about the use of the 'appendices environment' and someone very new to
LyX/LaTeX may not even know how to use an environment definition. Since the
majority of packages don't need this type of definition to use the
\usepackage[options]{package} command in the preamble.

Is there any way to give you more information? Is there some logfile whose content I could post to help, or some startup option for LyX, that gives a more detailed error? I can only say that the standard windows binary alway worked for me out of the box with LyX 1.4. And usually I don't have any Problems installing normal WinXP Software on my Transmeta notebook.

This next thing is a very long shot, but ... you might try booting the computer in safe mode and repeating the experiment. That would disable a bunch of drivers, including any network connections. LyX 1.5.0 beta1 and UTF-8 copy/paste
Québec, le 25 mars 2007 I compiled and installed LyX 1.5.0 beta1 on Ubuntu 6.10. It seems a little faster than 1.4 series. I wanted to try it especially for UTF-8 as Ubuntu 6.10 is UTF-8 based by default (like all modern linux distros). A copy/paste from another application (Gedit, Firefox, etc) to LyX gives me garbage for every diacritic sign (accented letters, ç, etc). I thought that a copy from UTF-8 to UTF-8 application would be easier :-( There are other annoyances in LyX 1.5.0 beta1 (QT4): - using the mouse to select a word, a few words or even a paragraph often fails, the beginning of the mouse selection or the ending selection are often forgotten with Gnome 2.16 (and the behavior is worst if you use Beryl); - I can import any other LyX files but I can't export to any previous version of LyX, I'm having this message: «Une erreur s'est produite lors de l'exécution de python -tt '/usr/share/lyx-1.5.0beta1/lyx2lyx/lyx2.» Indicating that an error occured while executing python; - Previewing a file in the dvi viewer sometimes doesn't work, I'm having such a message: «Fichier inexistant : /tmp/lyx_tmpdir12244R5TMCz/lyx_tmpbuf1/blabla.dvi» or Inexistant File: /tmp...blabla.dvi as if LyX looses the dvi temporary file I know this is a beta. Ok, after more experimentation with the package I discovered that you need
to create an appendices environment then all of the package options are
correctly used. So, directly after the 'start appendix here' command you
need to insert ERT\begin{appendices} and after all of your appendix material
an ERT\end{appendices} just like an environment.
I've attached a minimal example that changes the appendix style from:
A Title
to
Appendix A Title
in both the document and the toc.
I think it would be nice to post this info on the wiki (although I've never
personally posted anything), since this is the second time I've asked this
question and not received a response. Or is this just not very important to
the majority of people (hence no need to post to the wiki)? I don't know. I
just think it is good info, since the documentation isn't necessary clear
about the use of the 'appendices environment' and someone very new to
LyX/LaTeX may not even know how to use an environment definition. Since the
majority of packages don't need this type of definition to use the
\usepackage[options]{package} command in the preamble.

Is there any way to give you more information? Is there some logfile whose content I could post to help, or some startup option for LyX, that gives a more detailed error? I can only say that the standard windows binary alway worked for me out of the box with LyX 1.4. And usually I don't have any Problems installing normal WinXP Software on my Transmeta notebook.

Open a DOS window and cd to the directory under which you want LyX to create your "user" directory. On XP this is typically C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data. (LyX will create a LyX1.4.x subdirectory underneath it -- we hope.) If you already have a LyX1.4.x directory, delete it and everything underneath it. >From there, run \python.exe \Resources\configure.py and see if you get that same error message about the missing Python component. It's correct that Lyx thinks I am Admin and Documents folder is indeed on the D partition. But the document itself is writed on the C Partion. That could be a problem, I will look in to it. But Lyx was installed as Admin and I don't have any extra permissions on the Computer. So should be able to write anywhere.. Well, I'm running low on ideas. Does this happen with a variety of document classes, or just with one document class? Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling LyX? This next thing is a very long shot, but ... you might try booting the computer in safe mode and repeating the experiment. That would disable a bunch of drivers, including any network connections. If LyX does not hang, then the hourglass probably relates to LyX waiting on a system driver (disk or network) ... maybe ... possibly ... /Paul

I notice that the directory is "C:\Python20". I have Python 2.3 installed, and LyX ships with a stripped version of Python 2.5. Try this experiment again, but use C:\LyX14\python\python.exe. If that works, either upgrade your Python installation or put the LyX Python directory on the LyX path prefix. /Paul

LyX 1.5.0 beta1 and UTF-8 copy/paste
Québec, le 25 mars 2007 I compiled and installed LyX 1.5.0 beta1 on Ubuntu 6.10. It seems a little faster than 1.4 series. I wanted to try it especially for UTF-8 as Ubuntu 6.10 is UTF-8 based by default (like all modern linux distros). A copy/paste from another application (Gedit, Firefox, etc) to LyX gives me garbage for every diacritic sign (accented letters, ç, etc). I thought that a copy from UTF-8 to UTF-8 application would be easier :-( There are other annoyances in LyX 1.5.0 beta1 (QT4): - using the mouse to select a word, a few words or even a paragraph often fails, the beginning of the mouse selection or the ending selection are often forgotten with Gnome 2.16 (and the behavior is worst if you use Beryl); - I can import any other LyX files but I can't export to any previous version of LyX, I'm having this message: «Une erreur s'est produite lors de l'exécution de python -tt '/usr/share/lyx-1.5.0beta1/lyx2lyx/lyx2.» Indicating that an error occured while executing python; - Previewing a file in the dvi viewer sometimes doesn't work, I'm having such a message: «Fichier inexistant : /tmp/lyx_tmpdir12244R5TMCz/lyx_tmpbuf1/blabla.dvi» or Inexistant File: /tmp...blabla.dvi as if LyX looses the dvi temporary file I know this is a beta.
