Re: Tables without oldstylenums
Helge Hafting wrote: Niklas Huldén wrote: Hi! I have a lengthy (300 p) humanistic manuscript and have enabled \usepackage[osf]mathpazo as to get oldstyle figures across the whole document. However, I also have 50+ tables and if I've understood correctly one should not use oldstylenums except in the main text body. Is there any way to exclude these table floats from the generic option. I could of course mark every number in every table float as "math mode" but that would seem to be a lengthy operation, as would indeed be replacing all numbers in the text with ERT. Any suggestions? Unfortunately, LyX doesn't have options for turning oldstyle on/off for pieces of text - only for the whole document. At least if you use version 1.5. Various solutions: 1. Use ERT everywhere - but too much work. 2. Redefine the latex tabular environment so that it issues the "no oldstyle" command in addition to everything else it does. Then all tables comes out without oldstyle numbers. I don't know if this is feasible though. Version 1.5 may offer a solution if you're willing to create a custom layout file. Understanding layout files is some work, but gives these options: 3. Make a charstyle for "not oldstyle numbers". You can then mark anything and apply this style - the numbers marked will no longer be old-style. Easier than converting to math, because you can (probably) mark whole tables instead of hunting for each little number. You can also use this charstyle for numbers in uppercase headings. (Oldstyle numbers are lowercase, non-oldstyle numbers are uppercase numbers. So a number in uppercase text should not be oldstyle.) 4. For older versions of LyX, make a paragraph style (instead of a charstyle) for "standard, but not oldstyle numbers". Very much like alternative 3, except that it always works on whole paragraphs. But a table is usually in a paragraph of its own anyway, so not much of a problem here. You can then change the paragraph type for each table. Helge Hafting Thank You for all the suggestions! I think I will stick with the oldstyle figures in the tables also for now. If someone complains about it (which I seriously doubt), I can return to your suggestions. Many thanks! Niklas H.

Merge documentation into one doc!
We have discussed this before ... I wanted to find out how to adjust appendixes to replace A, B, C with Appendix A, Appendix B, Appendix C. Etc. In LyX 1.4 you did that with some ERT, but now with LyX 1.5 there is some fancy red appendix box and perhaps another way to do what I wanted. So I headed to the docs ... Horrible experience! I had to open 6, six, S-I-X different documents to search for the information I wanted (not counting the introduction)! How about a little merging - LyX should be pretty good at that, yes? :o) Martin PS. In the mean time I decided just to use A, B, and C for my appendices.
Miktex questions
Dear all, Could any please help me with this issue. I have lyx 1.5.1 installed on a windows XP pro SP2 machine. All work fine except when I tried to update or install a Miktex package on the fly. There's always an error messge "failure when receiving data from the peers". I had to download these packages manually but it's inconvenience when there's too many package to update. I have windows firewall installed but the problem exist even when I make it disabled. Any help is highly appreciated. Cheers, Son

AFAIK, LyX is geared to using xx_XX codes for languages (e.g., en_GB if you like all those extra letters in your words). I don't know if setting an environment variable to en_GB.UTF8 will work; LyX might not recognize it. Being neither a Debian user nor a user of non-default locales, all I can suggest is the following. In /Resources/ you should find a file named languages. The entry for British is british british "British" false iso8859-15 en_GB "" At least I assume from the first three fields that it's British. :-) You might try either of the following tweaks: 1. change iso8859-15 to UTF-8; or 2. change en_GB to en_GB.UTF8. If the dictionaries are not installed, you may download them at: http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/Aspell6 You may verify you document language setting on LyX's menu "Document", option "Settings". With less text beside your wrapped stuff, you push the next (sub)section further down and away from the wrapped region. Make sure that the only stuff that will get next to the wrap is ordinary text. OK...what am I supposed to be changing the size of? The only things I see are config windows called "Graphics" OR "Text Wrap Settings". I have changed all kinds of things in both those windows and see *absolutely no change whatsoever* in the LyX window appearance of the float box, graphic nor text (using 1.5.1). Is something suppose to be changing that I can see? The red (float?) box automatically goes full (column?) width and I see no way to adjust that. You don't see a change inside LyX when adjusting the width, but is some cases you may succeed in producing a wrapped float. I.e. you'll get something useful when printing or doing view->dvi. Now, perhaps the menu should read "insert->float->text wrap float(broken)" For this thing simply don't work well, and I don't think there is anything we can do with that either. Also, the text always starts at the bottom of the graphic--like "justified to bottom". How do I get the text to start at the top of the graphic so it actually has something to wrap around? You will not see the wrapping inside LyX, only in the output. LyX is not wysiwyg, it is wysiwym. (See the intro for an explanation.) Helge Hafting
Re: web references
I've been trying to understand how to include DOI and URL references within bibtex so that they come out properly formatted for APA. The kbibtex program is very good for keeping references in a bibtex file, and allows lots of extra functionality, like keeping the DOI and URL references so you can just click on them and it will bring up the document. However, apacite doesn't use these fields and I have had to code them into the 'howpublished' bibtex field to use with either the @article{} or @misc{} types: howpublished = {Retrieved 20 June 2007, from \doi{101.3...}} This of course is annoying, as it means copying the info which is already in the doi field into the howpublished field in a formatted manner. Does anyone know of a neat bibtex macro that would build the howpublished field from doi{}, url{} and retrieved{} fields? How could we add an extra type of format into apacite.bst which uses retrieved{}, url{} and doi{} fields? And, for lyx, only the "article(APA)" document class works with apacite without problems. All other document classes (like books) give errors when building the document from with lyx. This is because the \usepackage{apacite} has to come before the \usepackage[longnamesfirst]{natbib} package, which lyx puts first into the preample. My solution so far has been to export the lyx document to LaTeX and then eddit the .tex file to put the apacite reference before the natbib reference (and add the longnamesfirst correction). Mateo. Re: web references
Whether and how this will show up in the bibliography depends entirely on the bibtex entry type and the bibtex style used and its options. Miki, I would like to understand it better... By "bibtex entry type" you mean the entry type on JabRef, for instance, right? And by "bibtex style" you mean the bibliography style used in LyX, right? I tried to create a new entry type on JabRef, but LyX treated it as if it was a normal book reference. I suppose that was because that entry type didn't exist in the bibtex style that I'm using, which is apacitex (as I need to follow as closely as possible the APA style specifications in my bibliographies). Is it possible to change the apacitex style in order to make it accept a new entry type? If so, how? Where should I look for the apacitex file? Thanks! Re: web references
Thank you all so much! I was almost giving up and returning to manual bibliography building! After so much time spent on getting these tools working together, it would be really frustrating. The apacite user manual contains some discussion of listing URLs (specifically, whether line breaks are handled to APA specifications, and the relative merits of \href v. \url). You might also want to look at http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=citeURL for a suggestion about how/where to list web pages. The link you provided, Paul, had the solution: I'm now using the "Misc" entry type, on JabRef, and using the "howpublished" field to store the URL. Like that, the apacitex bibtex style seems to be able to integrate the URL in the printed bibliographic reference! Where may I find the apacite or the apacitex manual that you mentioned?
