move the current lehead (left even header) that has chapter # and chapter

move the current rohead (right odd) section name to the lohead (left odd).
 Keep the same italicised font.

put page numbers in lehead and rohead , except for first page of chapter
 eliminate page numbers from footers

After hours of going through the various manuals I think I need something

 \lehead{\pagemark}

Also, the program does not keep the areas typed in math mode in a

What you get after a second is a preview of what the formula will look

Second: which platform? I am guessing Windows here but the fact that you
talk about ispell is an indication of Linux.

Third: which version of LyX?

First, no matter what I do I can't run
spellcheck. It says something about it being unable to run ispell. That's
interesting since I've set my preferences to run something other than
ispell. I can't export documents to latex, even though I'm told I just need

don't know what else I could export to.

If you run one of the 1.6 release candidates on WinXP, that's a known
bug. Please use stable 1.5.6 instead.

And the bibliography has been a
complete mess. I have Bibtex up and running. But LyX never recognizes any
new entries.

If you are on Windows, the Bibtex 'push' feature does not work. You have
to save your bibtex file and reload it in LyX for the new entries to be
recognized.

I'm going to have to use Microsoft Word to do my bibliography.

To be honest, I'm quite fed up with this Latex/Lyx thing. I've spend many
more hours just trying to format/figure out what the formatting means than
writing my papers. The fact that the finished product looks nice does not
justify anything.

Fourth: LyX is a free software developed by people on their spare time,
the user list is very helpful and this is *gratis*, provided that you
ask gently and that you give more information.

Abdel.

Furthermore, I find it incomprehensible that there isn't a
much more user friendly decent word processer/typesetting program.
Seriously, what is wrong with having a program that the hardest thing is
pointing and clicking. Why do I keep running into computer codes!? I just
want to download a package that is good for X, and perhaps one that is good
for Y. I can't believe that we can put out iPhones but we can't get a good

it works only if I use:

/Applications/Adobe\ Reader\ 7.1.0/Adobe\ Reader\
7.1.0.app/Contents/MacOS/Adobe\ Reader

instead if i follow the other suggestions and use:

open -a Adobe Reader 7.1.0

it doesn't work. Nothing happens.

 /Applications/Skim.app/Contents/MacOS/Skim

What should also do the trick is open -a Skim, that lets OS X do the work
 of finding the app.

What I actually use is the attached script that explicitly tells Skim to
reload. I've disabled auto-reload in Skim, since this sometimes does not
work in combination with LyX's multiple compilation of the file.

So I have the attached script in ~/bin, set the script as executable (chmod

 Update PDF) in LyX

It is okay to ask questions on the list! That is one of the lists

themselves unpopular, but how do I do that? is fine.

When you use \includegraphic, the bottom edge of the picture
aligns with the text baseline. (Most letters sits on top of the
baseline, a few, like j and g extends under it.)

There are quite a few ways to change that. A simple one is to
put the image inside a \raisebox command. Raise by a negative length
to get the image lower down. Some experimentation may be necessary to
get it just right.

In some cases, one wants to line the image up so it matches something
else. Such as another image or a table. In such cases, put the
image inside a box (\parbox or \minipage). Such boxes can be aligned
in various ways: top alignment, bottom alignment, middle alignment.
You can usually get what you want, but it is not always trivial.

LyX now comes with a file named EmbeddedObjects.lyx, which
you can find from the help menu. It demonstrates lots of box stuff,
as well as the \raisebox trick. You can also find examples on the net.

Automagically reduce the spacing between ++ in the word C++

2008-10-22 Thread Daniel Lohmann

Hi,

I am currently in the process of polishing the typesetting of my
thesis. One of the things I would like to achieve is to reduce the
spacing between ++ in the words C++ and AspectC++, as this looks
somewhat strange with the font I am using.

This question is somewhat related to the thread

http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-users@lists.lyx.org/msg66864.html

where the original poster asked for a way to reduce the space between
the two slashes in hyperlinks. However, the original solution does not
work in my case, as C++ and AspectC++ are not typeset by any kind of
(La)TeX command, but are just ordinary words. Replacing all
occurrences with some ERT box is not an option, as this would cause
too much hassle and would not work in external material, such as
bibliographic entries. I am looking for a more elegant solution.

I think that I remember to have read about so-called catcodes (or
whatever?) in TeX, which apparently make it possible to declare
certain characters as active so that further processing is possible
whenever the TeX scanner reads such character. I wonder if it is
possible this way to declare in the preamble that

C followed by +, followed by +
is active and should be inherently substituted with something like
\mbox{C+\hspace{-.5ex}+}}

Any TeX gurus on this list who might help me?

Thanks!

Just a few mostly Mac specific comments that might be helpful. The correct

(of course replacing /path/to by the appropriate path.
/library/applications is not the standard location for applications; it's

 /Applications/Adobe\ Reader\ 7.1.0/Adobe\ Reader\
 7.1.0.app/Contents/MacOS/Adobe\ Reader

instead if i follow the other suggestions and use:

 open -a Adobe Reader 7.1.0

 it doesn't work. Nothing happens.

My guess is that you need:

open -a Adobe Reader 7.1.0

(with the quotation marks).

much for your help. Also, I am using LyX 1.5.6 . I looked throught
the authesis.cls file and did not find a line that said /LoadClass

This will dump you into a subdirectory of your user directory. Worth

Anyway, once you are sure which directory that is, go there and run

make lyx ignore left margin to center wide images

2008-10-22 Thread keeskooskaas

I have a figure placing problem which i cannot find a solution to. I need to
include a figure in my text that is very detailed. Therefore I need the
picture to be scaled wider then the text (via scaling 120% of textwidth or
95% of page width) This works,... but the image shifts to to RIGHT as soon
as the left side of IMAGE hits the lext margin of the Text/page. In other
words it no longer centers because it hit the left margin, it continues
scaling to the right but not the left.HOWEVER I WANT IT TO GO FURTHER
LEFT THEN THE TEXT MARGIN (see image)

I realise this is estheticly not ideal but I need to do it anyway :-)

If somebody knows what to do.. many thanks!

Re: make lyx ignore left margin to center wide images

2008-10-22 Thread ggszego

There are a few options to solve the issue. I personally prefer the
most straight forward ones, which are:
A) Rotate the Figure float: Right-click on the Float:Figure inset -
Settings - check Rotate sideways
Another option is to rotate the actual graphic inside the float: Right-
click on the figure - Settings - Angle (degrees) = 90

B) If rotating is not an option, edit the figure so that text is
readable in the scale you want (say 100% column width) and
rearrange the graphic blocks to fit.

You could change the margin settings for that particular page, but you
don't want to go there.

I still did not have luck.

Is this perhaps because i have placed my files in the wrong spot?
Should the authesis.layout file i made be with all the other layout
files? in Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/layouts/ instead
of in username/Library/Application Support/Lyx-1.5/layouts ?

And perhaps, these files (authesis.cls, aucas.clo, aut10.clo,
auecon.clo) should not be in this location:
users/username/library/texmf/tex/latex/authesis/

Once again, thank you very much.

So what was the output in this case? Did configure complete, or did it
die with an error?

The layout files should be in ~/Library/Application\
Support/LyX-1.5/layouts/. The username bit is meant to indicate your
main user directory, whatever that is. That's what ~ gets you, and also
should be the content of the $HOME environment variable. So if you do:

 echo $HOME
you'll get your home directory back.

And perhaps, these files (authesis.cls, aucas.clo, aut10.clo,
auecon.clo) should not be in this location:
users/username/library/texmf/tex/latex/authesis/

If kpsewhich is seeing them, then they are fine. So you might want to
check that again:

 kpsewhich authesis.cls

You need a # before the \Declare So try this:

#% Do not delete the line below; configure depends on this #
#\DeclareLaTeXClass{AU Thesis}

# Read the definitions from report.layout
Input report.layout

Put that in authesis.layout, and it should work now. We can hope!!

 Hi,

I am currently in the process of polishing the typesetting of my thesis.
One of the things I would like to achieve is to reduce the spacing
between ++ in the words C++ and AspectC++, as this looks somewhat
strange with the font I am using.

This question is somewhat related to the thread

 http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-users@lists.lyx.org/msg66864.html

where the original poster asked for a way to reduce the space between
the two slashes in hyperlinks. However, the original solution does not
work in my case, as C++ and AspectC++ are not typeset by any kind of
(La)TeX command, but are just ordinary words. Replacing all occurrences
with some ERT box is not an option, as this would cause too much hassle
and would not work in external material, such as bibliographic entries. I
am looking for a more elegant solution.

I think that I remember to have read about so-called catcodes (or
whatever?) in TeX, which apparently make it possible to declare certain
characters as active so that further processing is possible whenever
the TeX scanner reads such character. I wonder if it is possible this way
to declare in the preamble that
 C followed by +, followed by +
is active and should be inherently substituted with something like
 \mbox{C+\hspace{-.5ex}+}}

Any TeX gurus on this list who might help me?

Quick shot:

\makeatletter
\def\plus{+}
\def\smallplusplus{\raisebox{0.6ex}{\tiny+\hspace{-0.3ex}+}}
\catcode`\+=13
\long\def+#1{\ifx#1+\smallplusplus\else\plus#1\fi}
\makeatother

\documentclass{article}

\begin{document}

Single C

CPlus C+

CPlusPlus  C++ D  C++A

CPlusStar C+* D C+*A

\end{document}

Once forever on adding a document class in LyX

2008-10-22 Thread Giorgio Zavarise

Dear all,

The addition of document classes in LyX is for sure one of the most
debated topic. I also have had the problem in the past, and with
evolving LyX (on OSX) the way to solve has become more and more easy.

Just as an example, I have installed svmono from springer in this easy
way (MAC OSX 10.5.5):

1)
download and unpack the svmono.zip from Springer

2)
Perform TeX implementation update:
a)
copy files svmono.cls, svmult.cls e svind.ist into
~/Library/texmf/tex /latex
(if a folder does not exist, then create it)

b)
copy file svind.ist into
~/Library/texmf/tex /makeindex
(if a folder does not exist, then create it)

3)
LyX implementation update: (here the problem comes)
a)
find a .layout file to modify:
- ctrl-click on the LyX package and select show content from the menu
- go inside the Resources folder and then into the layouts folder
- copy the book.layout file on the Desktop and rename it svmono.layout
- modify the second row from
#  \DeclareLaTeXClass{book}
to
#  \DeclareLaTeXClass{svmono}

b)
copy svmono.layout into
~/Library/Application Support/Lyx-1.5/layouts

c)
start LyX and from the LyX menu select Reconfigure
END of the story
___

Now, usually everybody has the .cls files, and nobody knows how to
create the .layout file

Here is my proposal:
Even if not tested, and then not included into the LyX distributions,
why don't we start to collect them and put somewhere on the web site,
may be with a WARNING-UNRELIABLE MATERIAL label?

I truly believe this would help a lot!

Just in case, here is my svmono.layout file:

figure caption gives errors when exporting as PDF

can not get a caption :-(

There appears to be 5 errors

How do people get graphics with captions? and possibly figure numbers
that can be cross-referenced to?

Yes, I'd considered that, too. It obviously has a decent TeX parser in

seems to have a good parser, and it gives you a DOM-like structure that
can be manipulated all kinds of ways.

You can copy an equation from Lyx and paste it into Latexit and you

Then typeset and paste into keynote.

It would be nice if you could do it in one step, but I think that

the 'Section' areas, then the cursor acts normally.

Hmm... sounds like a bug.
Do you have Right-to-left language support enabled in

Also, the program does not keep the areas typed in math mode in a
different color. If I scroll to a new page, the formulas start out
blue, but then switch to black after a second.

What you get after a second is a preview of what the formula will look

 I would prefer that

You can turn off instant preview in the Preferences. Or, you can change

Second: which platform? I am guessing Windows here but the fact that you
talk about ispell is an indication of Linux.

Third: which version of LyX?

First, no matter what I do I can't run

new entries.

I just
want to download a package that is good for X, and perhaps one that is good
for Y. I can't believe that we can put out iPhones but we can't get a good
word procesing program/typesetting program. Ridiculous.

Re: How to change pdf viewer?

2008-10-22 Thread Pierfranco Minsenti
Hi,

I must confess that even in my case (LyX 1.5.4 on Mac Os X 10.3.9), if I
want to change the default PDF viewer I have to put the whole path to the
executable. For example, for using the pdf viewer Adobe Reader 7.1.0 for Mac
it works only if I use:

/Applications/Adobe\ Reader\ 7.1.0/Adobe\ Reader\
7.1.0.app/Contents/MacOS/Adobe\ Reader

instead if i follow the other suggestions and use:

open -a Adobe Reader 7.1.0

it doesn't work. Nothing happens.

Thanks, it works finally. But for someone else who also might want to
change the pdf viewer I add: it it not sufficient to give in the path to the
application package but to the application EXECutable itself, at least on
 Mac-OSX, in my case:

 /Applications/Skim.app/Contents/MacOS/Skim

What should also do the trick is open -a Skim, that lets OS X do the work
 of finding the app.

What I actually use is the attached script that explicitly tells Skim to
reload. I've disabled auto-reload in Skim, since this sometimes does not
work in combination with LyX's multiple compilation of the file.

So I have the attached script in ~/bin, set the script as executable (chmod
u+x ...), in LyX ~/bin/SkimReload.sh, and then always use View PDF (not:
 Update PDF) in LyX

\cfoot{\bf \large \scshape did this\\and it was fine}

The tawny frogmouth graphic sits a bit high as you can see in the attached
pic. Not a problem, just something I haven't as yet worked out how to fix. I
don't like bothering the list.

It is okay to ask questions on the list! That is one of the lists
purposes. People making demands or complaining loudly sometimes makes
themselves unpopular, but how do I do that?

C followed by +, followed by +
is active and should be inherently substituted with something like
\mbox{C+\hspace{-.5ex}+}}

Any TeX gurus on this list who might help me?

Thanks!

Daniel

Not with the GUI, I believe.

It should be possible by creating your own *.ui files.
Look at what is in /Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/ui/, create
your own set of *.ui and *.inc files, put them in your user-directory
and select them in the Preferences.

Thanks Charles!

However, I am editing and working in LyX, not LaTeX. Replacing C++ in

as it requires inserting some extra begin_inset and end_inset lines.
Moreover, this would not cover the occurrences of C++ in the

Bibtex: limit the number of authors for \cite to three

2008-10-22 Thread Oliver Arnold
Hi,

I use the style geralpha to layout my bibliographic references. When I
create a pdf-file with lyx everything is fine, except the citation
style. Now it looks like that: ...some text [NCTLH07]. There are five
authors for the cited entry (the first character of every surname is
used, plus the year).

I want to limit the characters used for a citation to three, so that it
looks like that: some text [NCT07]. Hence only mention the first
characters of the first three authors. Is that possible?

Thanks for any help.

lyx 1.5.x under debian

I try to get the latest 1.5 lyx under debian and entered

but synaptic does not like this line.

I also tried to update texlive et Co., but the latest version is 2005, which
seems to me a bit antique. It also asks for libgnome2-perl, which I can't get
if I search for it in synaptic (nor libgnome). Which package is responsible
for it?

http://www.samuel-greef.de/?p=210
tells me to get these packages and install them sequentially:

   1. lyx-common_1.5.4-1~emiscabpo40+1_all.deb
   2. libboost-filesystem1.34.1_1.34.1-2~emiscabpo40+1_i386.deb

   4. libboost-signals1.34.1_1.34.1-2~emiscabpo40+1_i386.deb
   5. lyx_1.5.4-1~emiscabpo40+1_i386.deb

# Pakete in der angegebenen Reihenfolge mittels “dpkg -i PAKETNAME”

Is this correct, or does synaptic do the job for me?

I would appreciate hints from one of you who uses Debian and has successfully
installed Lyx 1.5.4

Just a few mostly Mac specific comments that might be helpful. The correct
line should be:

python /path/to/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/configure.py

(of course replacing /path/to by the appropriate path.
/library/applications is not the standard location for applications; it's
typically just /Applications).

Note 2 (or 3) other things:

1. There's a space after python.

2. It should be Contents (with an s), not content.

3. Depending on your file system, the capitalization of LyX Contents and
Resources may matter. When in doubt, use proper capitalization.

I changed the layout file. to read report instead of article, ran
texhash, and still got the reconfigure error.

You said:
Hmm. That looks like a successful reconfigure to me. Try this again now from

ToolsPreferences, User Interface, hit Browse and then User Files. This
will dump you into a subdirectory of your user directory. Worth doing just
 to make sure.

I verified the directory and ran the python command. Here is my
terminal line I typed and its response.

I really appreciate your being so helpful.

make lyx ignore left margin to center wide images

That is, in Terminal, type:

cd ~/Library/Application\ Support/LyX-1.5/

to get to the user directory. Then type:

python /Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/configure.py

to reconfigure. (Note that in this line there is no /ui before
configure.)

I still did not have luck.

Is this perhaps because i have placed my files in the wrong spot?
Should the authesis.layout file i made be with all the other layout
files? in Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/layouts/ instead
of in username/Library/Application Support/Lyx-1.5/layouts ?

And perhaps, these files (authesis.cls, aucas.clo, aut10.clo,
auecon.clo) should not be in this location:
users/username/library/texmf/tex/latex/authesis/

Once again, thank you very much.

So what was the output in this case? Did configure complete, or did it
die with an error?

The layout files should be in ~/Library/Application\
Support/LyX-1.5/layouts/. The username bit is meant to indicate your
main user directory, whatever that is. That's what ~ gets you, and also
should be the content of the $HOME environment variable. So if you do:

 echo $HOME
you'll get your home directory back.

And perhaps, these files (authesis.cls, aucas.clo, aut10.clo,
auecon.clo) should not be in this location:
users/username/library/texmf/tex/latex/authesis/

If kpsewhich is seeing them, then they are fine. So you might want to
check that again:

 kpsewhich authesis.cls

thanks. it looks like my layout file is in the correct place. And
kpsewhich authesis.cls recognizes the file.
