Please provide examples for the float thing and other instances where the

Preamble is more difficult to solve I guess.

In many cases LyX is not able to find the true location of the
offending code (e.g. if inside a float or a macro definition in the
preamble).

Hi Wolfgang,

I don't have an answer for you but I would like to respond and say that I have
the same difficulties with finding and solving errors in Lyx (see my other posts
today) - even worse is the situation with BibTex and Lyx - there is none
indication whatsoever where and how to fix it...

I chased a citation error for more than an hour - closing Lyx and reopenening it
did the trick; well that is not what I call a deterministic behaviour

Anyway, what I do in these situations is that I export to Latex and work with
TeXnicCenter where you have more options for error tracking.

Still, Lyx is cool.

Cheers

Export to Latex

2009-06-04 Thread Ralf
Hi there,

me again - somehow related to my previous post but
this can be a separate question:

when I export to plain Latex (when Bug-hunting) the exportation
takes ages...okay I got a lot of high resolution PNGs in there -
so I put all pictures in Draft mode...alas, this did not help
and it seems Lyx still converts everything to EPS (?).

Is there a way to export only the text, not the pictures...?

Cheers

About Lyx Error Messages

2009-06-04 Thread Ralf
Dear Gurus,

sometimes even in Lyx you do something wrong and you get an error message. Most
of the time they are not very usefull - they simply indicate that something went
wrong with a short excerpt of what caused the trouble - the excerpt however is
not enough (for me at least) to find out what exactly went wrong and how to fix
it. You always have to go bug-hunting...

Maybe that is by choice of design to let the user chase it, but if TeXnicCenter
can do it, I dare to say, Lyx can (should?) do it.

TeXnicCenter let's you browse through the errors and puts you to the right
place, which is very very helpfull.

Is something like this planned in a future release or maybe it is already there
and I just missed it?

How do you people solve things like this?

Cheers
-Ralf

> Do you know how to set the offset between the figure and the title?

Hi Adrián,

I'd do it with wrapfigure:
In the menu, go to [Insert]->[Float]->[Figure Wrap Float]
and then you do the usual like in any figure float - you can place the caption
above or below the figure...

The settings of Wrap (right click opens the menu) lets you place the figure on
the left or the right. Note that wrapfigure places the figure where you put it
and it doesn't float (unless specified)

Offset:
What do you mean with 'Title'? If you mean Caption, then I cannot help you, but
if you are thinking about Figure and the main text then you can do it with an
ugly hack:
\vspace{-0.5cm} for example lets the vertical offset shrink for half a
centimeter. But I'm sure there are much more elegant ways to do it...I just
don't know them...You would include the ugly hack with: [Insert]->[Tex
Code]->\vspace{-0.5cm}

p.s. the help files in Lyx has something to say about this all as well, so check
it out

Hope this helps
Cheers

CocoAspell bug on Mac

2009-06-04 Thread Shane White
Installed Lyx version 1.6.2 and CocoAspell version 2.0.4 on Mac
version 10.5.7

When spell checking a document in Lyx I couldn't "add" words to the
dictionary.

After some web searching I discovered a fix is to comment the line
"home-dir $HOME/Library/Preferences/aspell" in file /usr/local/etc/
aspell.conf
This fixed the problem but involved a lot of messing about as user
root and altering permissions to allow me to edit this file.

Lyx and CocoAspell are excellent applications. I think the issue I've
described is worth fixing.

Thanks,
Shane.

It seems that there is an interaction with the babel package. When I turn

This is also true for Open Document (ODT) export which previously zipped up
all of the latex intermediate files in the temporary directory producing a
file that was unintelligible to OpenOffice.

[ANNOUNCE] LyX 1.6.3 is released

2009-06-04 Thread Jürgen Spitzmüller
Public release of LyX version 1.6.3
===

We are pleased to announce the release of LyX 1.6.3. This is the third
maintenance release in the 1.6.x series. Besides the usual improvements
of stability, the highlights of this release are:

* tex2lyx is now able to read files in all latex supported encodings and
transform them into the proper unicode-based format introduced in 1.5.0.
This paves the way for many other improvements in LaTeX->LyX translation.
* The performance problems when editing a master with child documents have
  been resolved.
* LyX 1.6.3 introduces some goodies provided by Qt 4.5 (menu support for
fullscreen mode in linux, close button on tabs). Of course these
improvements (as well as some Qt-related fixes) only show up if LyX is
  compiled against Qt 4.5.

A detailed list of changes is appended below, remaining known problems
are listed in the file RELEASE-NOTES.

All users are encouraged to upgrade to this version.

In case you are wondering what LyX is, here is what
http://www.lyx.org/ has to say on the subject:

LyX is a document processor that encourages an approach to writing
based on the structure of your documents, not their appearance. It
is released under a Free Software/Open Source license.

LyX is for people that write and want their writing to look great,
right out of the box. No more endless tinkering with formatting
details, 'finger painting' font attributes or futzing around with
page boundaries. You just write. In the background, Prof. Knuth's
legendary TeX typesetting engine makes you look good.

On screen, LyX looks like any word processor; its printed output --
or richly cross-referenced PDF, just as readily produced -- looks
like nothing else. Gone are the days of industrially bland .docs,
all looking similarly not-quite-right, yet coming out unpredictably
different on different printer drivers. Gone are the crashes
'eating' your dissertation the evening before going to press.

LyX is stable and fully featured. It is a multi-platform, fully
internationalized application running natively on Unix/Linux, the
   Macintosh and modern Windows platforms.

You can download LyX 1.6.3 here (the .bz2 are compressed with bzip2,
which yields smaller files):

ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/1.6.x/lyx-1.6.3.tar.gz
ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/1.6.x/lyx-1.6.3.tar.bz2
ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/lyx/lyx-1.6.3.tar.gz
ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/lyx/lyx-1.6.3.tar.bz2

and it should propagate shortly to the following mirrors (which will
also host the .bz2 versions):

ftp://ftp.lip6.fr/pub/lyx/stable/1.6.x/lyx-1.6.3.tar.gz
http://lyx.cybermirror.org/stable/1.6.x/lyx-1.6.3.tar.gz
ftp://gd.tuwien.ac.at/publishing/tex/lyx/stable/1.6.x/lyx-1.6.3.tar.gz
ftp://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/X11/LyX/stable/1.6.x/lyx-1.6.3.tar.gz

http://sunsite.icm.edu.pl/pub/unix/editors/lyx/stable/1.6.x/lyx-1.6.3.tar.gz
http://lyx.mirror.fr/stable/1.6.x/lyx-1.6.3.tar.gz

Prebuilt binaries (rpms for Linux distributions, Mac OS X and Windows
installers) should soon be available at
ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/1.6.3/

If you already have the sources of the previous release, you may want to apply
one of the following patches instead
ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/1.6.x/patch-1.6.3.gz
ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/1.6.x/patch-1.6.3.bz2

If you find what you think is a bug in LyX 1.6.3, you may either
e-mail the LyX developers' mailing list (lyx-devel lists.lyx.org),
or open a bug report at http://bugzilla.lyx.org

If you're having trouble using the new version of LyX, or have a
question, first check out http://www.lyx.org/help/. If you can't find
the answer there, e-mail the LyX users' list (lyx-users lists.lyx.org).

Enjoy!

The LyX team.

aux-file of lyx-run

2009-06-04 Thread Wolfgang Engelmann
Dear Gurus for lyx/latex,

I am trying to trace a citation error in my document (koma, book, 2 column,
debian). I divided the document in a master and several subdocuments.
I am getting in /tmp/lyx_tmpdir.TJ4198/lyx_tmpbuf directories for the master
and the subdocuments.
Could somebody explain the task of these tmp files and its handling by lyx?

The reason is, that I have difficulties to localize the citation error,
because even after taking out the offending citation lyx is still complaining
about it. I have to close lyx and reopen it until I get the response after
removing. I guessed, that the aux file is reused after a new run of lyx
(without closing it down), and wanted to remove it therefore from the
tmp-directory(ies). I am however, uncertain about it, since the last file
which contains the citation error produces no tmp-directory.

Also, why has the master file directory no aux-file, although this is the file
where the list of references is located at the end. The subdirectories have
also a list of references at the end, but they are in a commentary-note
(allowing to view all the references, that is master and subdirectories).

As a general rule, you can type in the terminal:

texdoc [package name]

and TeXLive will open the documentation for you. So in your case it would be:

texdoc komascr

It doesn't always work, but it's extremely handy when it does.

Hi everybody
dvips knows 68 standard colours (see then at h t t p ://

that have names. Some of them are quite beautiful. How can I use these named
colours is Lyx - for example to define text colours or the shading colour. I
have tried to insert:

\usepackage[usenames,dvipsnames]{color}

\definecolor{shadecolor}{named}{ProcessBlue}

in the preamble but it doesnt work.

If I export the LyX file to LateX and insert the in the first part of the
latex preamble it does work. Is there something extra that I need to do in
Lyx ?

I don't know, but the answer to your question lies here: Export the LyX
file to LaTeX, then compare it to what does work. I'll guess there's an
issue with the order in which things are loaded. Alternatively, it may
be that LyX is loading the color package before you do. So you may need
to pass the options as document options (which get forwarded to the
packages).

Defning the shadecolor using rgb codes does work: e.g
\definecolor{shadecolor}{rgb}{0.95,0.1,1} for a purplish colour to use in a
shaded box. I suppose one could try to find the rgb codes for all those
nice dvips colours, but using the names would be more elegant and easy to
remember.

Incedently: Can I define the colour of a certain type of text (e.g. section
heading) in the preamble?

If you want the color to appear in LaTeX output, then yes. Use the
titlesec package, or the customization facilities of the koma-script
classes, if you're using them.

Koma-script package is a LaTeX-package and therefore its
documentation is in the LaTeX distribution, not in LyX's folders.
Search your system for the file "scrguide.pdf" if you cannot find
anything, download it from here:

ftp://ftp.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/koma-script/scrguide.pdf
Look there at section 4.

Hello Uwe,

thank you. I didn´t know that there is a template – this helps a lot.

But I still do have problems. I do not find the koma-script UserGuide,
which I searched out of Lyx and in my \usr-folder also. (I use OSX and
do have no "texmf" in /usr/share/… Instead I found texmf in /usr/local/
texlive/2008, but in the doc-folder there is not latex-folder)

In the extended guide from Lyx I find a note for koma-letters (v.1),
that there are two types "letter" and "opening", which define the
beginning of the letter, and which have to be used. I don´t
understand, what these types are, and I could not find them, althought
there is mentioned, that they are marked with the letter "O" and "L"
on the left margin – maybe that´s not the case for v.2.

Is that what you mean by letter head and foot definitions? Where could
I find those definitions or enter them? I couldn´t find this in the
koma-letter2.lyx-template neither.

Thank you*
Jess

You forgot to use a letter closing and mixed the signature with the
closing. I fixed tis in the attached LyX file.

That you cannot see the bank and phone is due to the missing letter
head or foot definitions. To see how this is done, have a look at
the "koma-letter2.lyx" file that you find in LyX's template folder
or via the menu File -> New from template.

For more infos about the koma letter document class, have a look at
the koma-script UserGuide section 4.
