Yes, pritty much. I saved the lyx2.0 file with another name and exported that

As I mentioned in a second mail I tried also to export the lyx file as a .tex

question about styling/highlighting abbreaviations

2010-09-20 Thread Ipacs Péter
Hi Guys,

Forgive me if my question is newbie but I'm indeed a newbie both to latex
and to Lyx as well.I was trying to use some supported way to highlight
abbreviations in a Lyx document but I found no good way so far. I also did
the standard drill of looking through forums etc. without any luck.

What I'm trying to achieve is something similar to the behavior of the
abbr tag in HTML; a way to semantically tell that a given piece of text is
an abbreviation and the ability to apply a common style to all the different
abbreviations.

The nomenclature package looks promising but - as far as I understand - it
lacks this feature.

It would be also nice to have a capability in Lyx
that automatically converts pieces of texts into abbreviations based on the
list of nomenclatures entered previously.

Let me give you a quick example. I enter a nomenclature entry like: HTML
= Hyper Text Markup Language, for example. Later in the document when I
write HTML Lyx would automatically recognize the text as a known
abbreviation and in the rendered document all the occurrences of the string
HTML would have been styled as italics - maybe as hyperlinks to the
nomenclature list.

What do you think? Is it possible to have something similar off the shelf?

Thank you in advance!

Cheers,
Peter

Re: question about styling/highlighting abbreaviations

2010-09-20 Thread Paul Rubin
What you have in mind with automatic substitution would be a macro. LyX 1.6.x
does not support macros directly; you can create them in the preamble if you
know how to write LaTeX code. My impression is that LyX 2.0 will have a macro
capability. As an alternative hand-coding macros in LaTeX, you can bind a
custom key combination to a sequence of LyX functions (LFUNs) that inserts what
you want (so that, for instance, Ctrl-Alt-H inserts HTML along with possibly
some custom formatting). The downside there is that (a) there's a limited
number of uncommitted key combos and (b) if you're like me, you won't remember
them.

As far as markup goes, remember that your document will probably end up being
turned into a DVI, PS or PDF file, so the final product will not contain any
markup. I think what you want is visual cues, which leads you to custom
character styles. Rob Oakes has a nice blog post
(http://blog.oak-tree.us/index.php/2009/11/14/customize-lyx-character-styles)
that will get you started on that. I think Steve Litt also documented it
somewhere, but I'm afraid I don't have a link to his book handy. Searching
the archive of the user list should turn it up.

that is the content of it:
- open LyX 2.0svn
- open a file that you previously created with LyX 2.0svn
- export it to format LyX 1.6.x

Result: no converted file is output.

It only works correctly when you made a change to the opened file.

in other words have you tried to change the file?

I understood the last sentence as
loading my file, change it (eg add a word),
export it as lyx 1.6.x file

however, Pavel (and the author of the ticket) ment to change the name of the
file (?).

Now I understand. There is indeed a .lyx16 file, but this does not show up if
I try to load it into the lyx 16 version.
I have to rename it to 'a-name.lyx'
Loading this solves the issue.

I thought lyx 1.6.x understands .lyx16 and loads that one.

Sorry for the noise.

There is still the question why I get this error if I try to load the .tex
file:
An error occurred whilst running tex2lyx -f 'EG-Q16x.tex' 'EG-Q16x.lyx'

and this one if I try to load the exported .html file:
An error occurred whilst running java -jar htmltolatex.jar -input 'EG-Qn.html'
-out

Yes, the styling part is relatively easy. One way: DocumentSettings,
then go to the Modules pane. Load the logicalmkup module. This will
give you access, in particular, to the Noun character style, under
EditText Settings. This one may not do what you want, but, if not, then
it will be relatively easy to produce an alternative if you (a) look at
the logicalmkup.module file, which will be in LyX's layout/ directory,
and (b) read some of ch. 5 of the Customization manual.

To make them all links would take a little more work. I'm no expert on
nomenclature, so don't know exactly how to do it. But start with the
styling part.

The question is, how can I add the double slash in math environment?
Everytime I try to do it, a regular slash is rendered.

LyX is able to handle that case but there is currently no way to enter
the extra vertical space specification \\[0.3em] through the GUI.

Simply write as latex the array outside mathed (with the \\[0.3em])
then select it and press Control-M. After that, you can copypaste
the array inside mathed and the \\[0.3em] will be retained.

If you need to change the spacing, copy the array in mathed (only the
array and not the math hull) and paste it outside of mathed, then change
the spacing and apply again the above procedure. A little cumbersome but
it works.

As far as markup goes, remember that your document will probably end up being

that will get you started on that. I think Steve Litt also documented it

Now I understand. There is indeed a .lyx16 file, but this does not show up if

I have to rename it to 'a-name.lyx'
Loading this solves the issue.

I thought lyx 1.6.x understands .lyx16 and loads that one.

Sorry for the noise.

There is still the question why I get this error if I try to load the .tex

An error occurred whilst running tex2lyx -f 'EG-Q16x.tex' 'EG-Q16x.lyx'

and this one if I try to load the exported .html file:

Yes, the styling part is relatively easy. One way: DocumentSettings,
then go to the Modules pane. Load the logicalmkup module. This will
give you access, in particular, to the Noun character style, under
EditText Settings. This one may not do what you want, but, if not, then
it will be relatively easy to produce an alternative if you (a) look at
the logicalmkup.module file, which will be in LyX's layout/ directory,
and (b) read some of ch. 5 of the Customization manual.

To make them all links would take a little more work. I'm no expert on

Yes, pritty much. I saved the lyx2.0 file with another name and exported that
one as an 1.6 lyx file, which gave however the error above.

As I mentioned in a second mail I tried also to export the lyx file as a .tex
file, but I am told
an error occurred whilst running tex2lyx -f ...

As another trial I used the most recent elyxer:
elyxer EG-Q.lyx EG-Q.html
which worked well (except the size of some images was not well translated).
But importing it in lyx1.6.7 gives:
an error occurred whilst running java -jar
htmltolatex.jar -input 'EG-Qn.html' -out

It was a bad idea of mine to try lyx 2
reminds me of the mantra...

You surely know, that the extension of exported files is _not_ ".lyx" but e.g.
".lyx16" ?

which means, lyx2.0.0svn is not exporting the lyx file for 1.6.x, since there
is no .lyx16

could it be that the lyx2lyx script or whatever does the job needs something
which is missing in my case? Can I run this script (name?) separately and
how? Has anybody successfully exported a .lyx16 file from 2.0.0?

Yes, just tested it. But of course my file was different from yours.

If you've got both 1.6 and 2.0 installed, it is possible that LyX is

Re: question about styling/highlighting abbreaviations

2010-09-20 Thread Paul Rubin
What you have in mind with automatic substitution would be a macro. LyX 1.6.x
does not support macros directly; you can create them in the preamble if you
know how to write LaTeX code. My impression is that LyX 2.0 will have a macro
capability. As an alternative hand-coding macros in LaTeX, you can bind a
custom key combination to a sequence of LyX functions (LFUNs) that inserts what
you want (so that, for instance, Ctrl-Alt-H inserts "HTML" along with possibly
some custom formatting). The downside there is that (a) there's a limited
number of uncommitted key combos and (b) if you're like me, you won't remember
