I didn't have this available since it was built in /tmp a few weeks ago. I pulled in the Lyx code again, installed the aspell *dev package (which was not installed), recompiled, and now things work. Thoughts on Multiple Document Formats
Because I think like a software engineer, I'm putting documents together in Lyx so that I can generate them with a makefile. This isn't (I hope!) just over the top attention to detail -- most of my graphs are generated in Scilab, and I've found that the best way to not lose the source for a graph is to generate it on the fly and discard the actual eps file when I'm done. I recently got an email from a reader who got one of my PDF documents off the web, then as an experiment reformatted it for a Sony eBook reader. It actually looks OK, and it has made me think (dangerous I know, but there you are). Since my 'build time' model is to open a command line, go to the correct directory, type make, and go have some coffee, why shouldn't I set things up so that I end up with two sets of documents -- one for this big desktop universal eBook reader that I'm typing at, and another for little eBook readers. Particularly if I can find one eBook format that'll at least be suitable for a number of readers. But -- how do I do this? As far as I can see, the latex and lyx command lines are not rich in switches to do things like insert formatting commands. It appears that the best I can do is to include a file with page margins, then rename files as appropriate so that when the eBook version gets built that file name points to the eBook margins, and when the regular old version gets built that file name points to decent margins for A-size paper. Is this the best I can do, or is there some other, better way? -- Tim Wescott Wescott Design Services Voice: 503-631-7815 Cell: 503-349-8432 http://www.wescottdesign.com

Hi Tim, I haven't looked into, but you might see what tools are available for creating ePub files. LyX can export to XHTML already, and ePub is merely a subset of XHTML. It seems that getting an XHTML file is the easy step. You could either use eLyXer, or the native XHTML export. Both appear to create very nice output. From there, you would only need to find a tool to convert the XHTML to ePub. One option might be Calibre, which is a free eBook library tool. After the ePub file has been created. You could go after it with a dedicated editor, such as Sigil. I'm willing to bet that you could probably automate the entire process without too much effort. It might be possible to even create a script that does it all for you. Calibre has a command line processor, even though I haven't played with it much. If interested, you can find more about the different: Calibre - http://calibre-ebook.com/user_manual/conversion.html Sigil - https://code.google.com/p/sigil/ This page also has some good info, though it's a bit dated. http://www.jedisaber.com/eBooks/Readers.asp Let me know how your experiments go. Help with DVI output
Hi everybody, I'm a somewhat new LyX user and have run into the following problem: Two of my floating figures/tables don't show up where they are supposed to be in the DVI output but a couple of paragraphs later/earlier. If tried placing somewhere else in the document but the misplacement still happens. Also, how do I install the caption package for LyX 1.6.8 ? Thanks you for your suggestions, Best regards, Tim

If tried placing somewhere else in the document but the misplacement still happens. This is normal. It is why the figures and tables are called floats: They float to where LaTeX thinks it is best to put them. If you really want them to go right where you put them---this is usually not a good idea, though, because it can lead to very bad page breaks---then get inside the float, hit EditFloat Settings, and then deselect Default Placement and choose Here definitely. You could also try Here if possible, which will make LaTeX put it there unless that's bad. Also, how do I install the caption package for LyX 1.6.8 ? This is a LaTeX issue. Install it however you normally install LaTeX packages. If you don't know how to do that, then: What OS are you using? Richard

Lyx2 + latex-tufte -- recurring error on rendering to DVI
Hi — I am a newcomer to this list. Please forgive me in advance for missteps. This looks like a really great community and I look forward to learning fast. I'm running Lyx2.0b3 on Mac OSX 10.6.6. I have the latest installation from Mac TeX and (using TeX Live Utility) did an update of all packages. I started several documents using the plain article class, using the following environments: Standard, Title, Abstract, Section, Itemize, Paragraph, and Float (Figure). Each has some images and a few local styles (just using the LyX interface). Now I want to start making the document more attractive and I want to see what I can do with the latex-tufte class. I switched the class and then the errors started as soon as I try to view the DVI. Basically, I get several repetitions of this pattern in the LaTeX Errors window: ! Argument of \MakeTextLowercase has an extra }. ! Paragraph ended before \MakeTextLowercase was complete. ! You can't use `math shift character $' after \the. ! Argument of \@skipmath has an extra }. ! Paragraph ended before \@skipmath was complete. All five of those lead to a highlight of the same portion of text in the document. Looking at the source for that portion (and the surrounding source), I don't see any evidence of the errors listed. In fact, I don't see any of the commands (is that the right word?) listed. I am modestly skilled at some scripting languages, but a TeX newbie, so I don't really know where to dig. I can add that, when I look at View Complete Log, there is actually a larger pattern. (The overview LaTeX Errors window seems to leave some out.) Listing only the error lines themselves (I assume those are the ones with exclamation points), this is the complete pattern (after which it moves to another place in the document and does the whole thing again): ! ! Undefined control sequence. ! Use of \SOUL@n doesn't match its definition. ! Use of \protect doesn't match its definition. ! Package soul Error: Reconstruction failed. ! Undefined control sequence. ! Missing number, treated as zero. ! Illegal unit of measure (pt inserted). ! Extra }, or forgotten \endgroup. In addition to looking at the source, I have cut back on the document so that it only produces one of these, and then, eventually, none. Character by character, I found some arbitrary place where it started to do this. To my naive eyes, there is nothing magical about that point. I am happy to try other troubleshooting techniques. Suggestions? TIA, to say the least — Michael Nonprofit Online News http://news.gilbert.org

I didn't have this available since it was built in /tmp a few weeks ago. I pulled in the Lyx code again, installed the aspell *dev package (which was not installed), recompiled, and now things work. Browsing through all the documentation pulled up the information as well that the dev package was required. I think I'll file this as a bug under LyX with Debian... For average users, I'd think this is an item expected to be there. I just saw Paul's note as well (apparently he had the same problem). Thank you very much for your patience and help, Stephan!
Since my 'build time' model is to open a command line, go to the correct directory, type "make", and go have some coffee, why shouldn't I set things up so that I end up with two sets of documents -- one for this big desktop "universal eBook reader" that I'm typing at, and another for little eBook readers. Particularly if I can find one eBook format that'll at least be suitable for a number of readers. But -- how do I do this? As far as I can see, the latex and lyx command lines are not rich in switches to do things like insert formatting commands. It appears that the best I can do is to include a file with page margins, then rename files as appropriate so that when the "eBook version" gets built that file name points to the eBook margins, and when the "regular old" version gets built that file name points to decent margins for A-size paper. These will set document options but then do nothing but include the common document. Richard

I'm also in the process of trying to figure out how to convert my own book to ePub for digital distribution and would love to bounce ideas back and forth. Cheers, Rob

It is why the figures and tables are called "floats": They "float" to where LaTeX thinks it is best to put them. If you really want them to go right where you put them---this is usually not a good idea, though, because it can lead to very bad page breaks---then get inside the float, hit Edit>Float Settings, and then deselect "Default Placement" and choose "Here definitely". You could also try "Here if possible", which will make LaTeX put it there unless that's bad. Also, how do I install the caption package for LyX 1.6.8 ? This is a LaTeX issue. Install it however you normally install LaTeX packages. If you don't know how to do that, then: What OS are you using? Richard

Perhaps you had the problems with 1.6 because of reading and writing LyX 1.6 the same files as LyX 2.0 - when starting LyX from terminal you may add -dbg lyxrc as command line arguments to verify that. You have to add e.g. --with-version-suffix=-2.0 to make LyX 2.0 using a parallel $HOME/.lyx-2.0 directory for it's settings. > I think I'll file this as a bug under LyX with Debian...
