I've never found the thesaurus to be anything but a keystroke that
offers no alternatives at all or seldom at best.

I think you're probably better off using another thesaurus apart from
the one that doesn't work in LyX.

In my experience XeTeX typesetting is inferior to that of LaTeX. But
then I'm no expert.

I'm not sure I follow. Do you mean why use XeTeX? Largely for the font support,
but also because I thought it was the superior engine these days. Perhaps that
was foolish.

Hello:

The manual of magyarlatex clearly states that you have to
use husort.pl instead of makeindex.

In lyx 2.0.x you have to set "Tools -> Preferences -> Output
-> Latex -> Index generation -> Processor" to "Custom".
Below this you set "Command:" to husort.pl with full path (eg:
/home/username/husort.pl).
In linux make sure that husort.pl has the correct run permission.
Then don't forget to click save. Do a Tools -> Reconfigure.
Restart lyx. Now the index should be generated correctly.

Or write xtetex2rtf :-)-O

Does it really matter, when using LyX, which back end one uses?

I think I answered my own question there. It seems to come down to that issue:
no easy route from XeTeX to LaTeX for latex2rtf to work. Kinda obvious I guess!

All this so I can give my thesis chapters to supervisors in Word for feedback
via track changes. I think it would have been simpler to just install LyX on
their machines...
