Many thanks to Guenter for the comment about OT1. Followed this
path and have changed to using non-Tex fonts. This has solved the
< > and | conversion errors and seems to have fixed an inconsistency
in handling quotation marks.
Rather oddly the older Lyx 2.0.6 on Kubuntu uses OT1 but has no erro
