Why would one ever use pdf2pdf? Lualatex (pdf5) generates proper PDF. I haven't encountered the italic issue, but if I can verify it I will take it up with the package maintainer. You can take any font you like, and if New Century Schoolbook 14 works, use that. I just happen to like Noto :-)-O
