Cannot display document pdf but dvi works
Hallo everybody I use LyX 1.6.1 on Mac OS X Leopard Since yesterday I coundn't generate a pdf for a report that I am working on. The error message reads: /var/folders/ub/ubvWLUkKHf8WAywv5rmtcE+++TI/-Tmp-/lyx_tmpdir.xJL136/ lyx_tmpbuf1/bsadan-090615-baselinreport-e.pdf bsadan-090615-baselinreport-e is the name of my document. Re: Including LaTeX code produced by Sweave in a LyX document
Answering my own question for the record To include latex code generated by R through Sweave one has to specify a filename with a .tex extension save the latex files there. In that way Sweave doesnt print the tex code in the pdf document by saves it in the specified place. In LyX these tex documents can be included as child documents Insert File Child Document Generate pdf and update the pdf directly afterwards. R has functions can generate latex tables which is highly cusomizable. When these functions are run using sweave in LyX the do exactly what they are supposed to do and generate Latex code. LyX then typesets the verbatim code perfectly as in the pdf document. What I want is obviously the table and not the latex code that produces the table. When I paste that code into ERT it generate the table perfectly. Using named colors
Hi everybody dvips knows 68 standard colours (see then at h t t p :// en.wikibooks.org/wiki/LaTeX/Colors#The_68_standard_colors_known_to_dvips ) that have names. Some of them are quite beautiful. How can I use these named colours is Lyx - for example to define text colours or the shading colour. I have tried to insert: \usepackage[usenames,dvipsnames]{color} \definecolor{shadecolor}{named}{ProcessBlue} in the preamble but it doesnt work. If I export the LyX file to LateX and insert the in the first part of the latex preamble it does work. Is there something extra that I need to do in Lyx ? Defning the shadecolor using rgb codes does work: e.g \definecolor{shadecolor}{rgb}{0.95,0.1,1} for a purplish colour to use in a shaded box. I suppose one could try to find the rgb codes for all those nice dvips colours, but using the names would be more elegant and easy to remember. Incedently: Can I define the colour of a certain type of text (e.g. section heading) in the preamble? regards Christiaan

LyX and R: Unable to import data
Hi Everybody I use R2.8.0 on Mac OS X. I set up LyX 1.6.1 to use Sweave today following the instructions on the LyX wiki. It seems to work fine. I can compile the test file I found on CRAN (http://cran.r-project.org/contrib/extra/lyx/) without a problem and the output looks very nice. In the test file the following R code is used. myFirstChunkInLyX= xObs - 100; xMean - 10; xVar - 9 x - rnorm(n=xObs, mean=xMean, sd=sqrt(xVar)) mean(x) @ that should be the same as: xObs - 100 xMean - 10 xVar - 9 x - rnorm(n=xObs, mean=xMean, sd=sqrt(xVar)) mean(x) in the R console. My problem is that I want to import data to use in my report. In the R source I currently use to analyse my data I import it through csv.get(). I have found that I cannot use csv.get() or write.csv() from within LyX. I don't seem to be able to use load() to get a .rda file in either. So now I am stuck because no data equals no report. Is this issue related to LyX, LaTeX or R? Thanks in advance Christiaan

Including LaTeX code produced by Sweave in a LyX document
Hi Everybody I started using R with LyX (through Sweave) recently (earlier today actually) and can see from here that it has great potential. I now want sweave to generate its output inside something like ERT Is there a way to say to LyX "what follows here is LaTeX and it must be handled like you include ERT" latex code generated by sweave comes here "close ERT-like environment" regrads Christiaan

Indeed! texhash in users mode doesn't work but it does work in administrator mode (I used sudo). After running texhash in administrator mode kpsewhich returns ./rotfloat.sty from anywhere and not just from the directory in which the file is located. I tried my LyX document and it worked. graphic in fancy header causes crash with ps2pdf
Hallo Everybody I use LyX 1.6.1 on Mac OS X I have a report with fancy header and a logo in the header. Sorry, sloppy terminology on my side. You used ps2pdf, that means that first a Postscript file is generated, and that can only contain EPS images. So it should work when you use pdflatex instead of ps2pdf, or when you use an EPS image. Thanks, I'll try using a eps image. The reason I used ps2pdf is because the resulting pdf file is much smaller (the pdflatex file is 27M for a 50 page document). Why is there such a big difference between the size of the pdf files? Thanks again for helping regards Christiaan

Hi Everybody I have written a large technical report with LyX and now the project sponsor wants to publish it as a book. The format they are thinking about should be very visual with a lot of photos as backdrop to the pages and things like that. I have approached a publisher that wants to do it in some DTP program. They see all my beautiful LateX as an obstacle. They are going to be very expensive (for example $3000 for indexing). Does anyone have experience or examples of an more popular eye candy approach to publishing with LyX/LaTeX. kind regards Christiaan

The stuf in the ERT look like this \multicolumn{1}{|S{Data}{r}|}{1107.89}. This is the individual cell content. The problem seems to be related to a inline formula I exported the file to Latex and this is what the offending line looks like: more than 30~000 \textgreek{m}g/m{\small 3} during stove use (several times the US-EPA 24-hour ambient standard of 150 \textgreek{m}g/m $^{3}$ for PM$_{10}$ {[}particulate matter with a diameter of less than 10 \textmu{}m] The error message is: Font LGR/cmr/m/n/9=grmn0900 at 9.0pt not loadable: Metric (TFM) file not found ...ween 300 to more than 30~000 \textgreek{m} g/cubic I wasn't able to read the size data for this font, so I will ignore the font specification. [Wizards can fix TFM files using TFtoPL/PLtoTF.] You might try inserting a different font spec; e.g., type `I\fontsame font id=substitute font name' Does anyone understand what this means or how i can fix it? thanks in advance Christiaan
Re: Uncompilable file
Thanks Jürgen, it worked Incidentally, How does M-x work. Is M some special key that you hold down. I have a macbook, so I have fn,ctrl, alt and cmd -is it one of them? Thanks again for saving my day regard Christiaan On 01/04/2008, Jürgen Spitzmüller [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Christiaan Pauw wrote: Does anyone understand what this means or how i can fix it? Yes. Since you're using a Greek µ (mu) character, LyX is switching to greek encoding, but you do not have the appropriate Greek fonts installed. One solution (apart from installing this font) is, as Bennett pointed out, to switch to math mode. Another one is to use the correct symbol MICRO SIGN instead of the (similar-looking) GREEK SMALL LETTER MU. You can insert the correct symbol in LyX by the sequence M-x unicode-insert 0x00b5 (where M-x opens the mini-buffer). Or just copy it from here: µ. If you use such units a lot, you might consider using a special package, such as SIunits. Jürgen

Hi everybody I use to have a working Aspell on LyX 1.5.1 of Win XP but I seem to have broken it. When I try F7 get the message: The spellchecker could not be started No word list could be found for language en_US. Does anyone know what to do bar re-installing LyX? thanks Christiaan

Aspell problems in Lyx 1.5.1
Hi All I installed 1.5.1 for windows yesterday . It is a vast improvement on the already good 1.4.1 I had previously. The only thing that doesn't work is the spellchecker. I have a working aspell installed under C:\Aspell . In the preferences language settings spellchecker the spellchecker executable shows a greyed out aspell (library). Does anyone have an idea what can be wrong or how I can point LyX to my Aspell instalation Regards Christiaan

Article with seperate title page and TOC
Hallo Everybody I am writing a report using the article class but I want the title page and TOC on seperate pages like the report class does (but I don't want tot use Chapters like the report class). I used a manual page break after Title, author, date but sometimes I get errors when I compile. When I delete the manual page break, everything works again. Is there a way in which I can change the article class to automatically break after the title-author-date or to change the report class to be able to use it without chapters so that it does not number the sections 0.1 0.2 0.3 etc but just 1 2 3 etc? regards Christiaan

Adding longtables to List of Tables
Hi All I have a 100 page document with a lot of table floats in it. Thus have a List of Tables in the Table of Content. Everything works fine except for 4 longtables that I have. I could not place these tables in a float because they cover several pages. I have searched this list and found some advice on how to add tables to a List of Tables. I added the following ERT \addcontentsline{lot}{lot}{\hspace{0.6cm}\thetable\hspace{0.7cm} TABLE NAME \hfill} The first table look OK in the List of Tables The second and all subsequent ones have the table number too far left The fourth table has the page number too far left It looks something like this: 1. TABLE 1 i 2. TABLE 2 ii 3. TABLE 3 iii 4. TABLE 4 1 (too much space here) 5. TABLE 5 5 6. TABLE 6 6 ...etc Table 5 is the first float. From there on everything is OK Adjusting the values of the \hspace in the inserted ERT seems to have no effect. This is the only mistake is an otherwise beautiful document. Does anybody know how to fix this. regards Christiaan

strange text alignment in tables
Hi all I am writhing a questionnaire in Lyx 1.4.1 on Win XP. The whole thing is one gigantic table. I experience very strange effects with the alignment of text both vertically and horizontally 1. Text in adjacent columns are not aligned even when both are set at the same vertical alignment. This happens not only but especially when a ctr-enter was used. 2. Multicolunm the cells above and below to disregard their column width settings 3. Horizontal alignment is not the same for rows either. Sometimes the text begins with an indent, sometimes not 4. Setting the column with sometimes does not set the width of the column but the width of the text within . this is the case in multicolumns. The problem is that there is no control over the width of a column when one cell is also part of a multicolumn Can anyone help regards Christiaan . -- Dr Christiaan Pauw (tel) +27 12 420 2015 (fax) +27 12 420 4016 The peacock’s feather - whenever I gaze at it - makes me sick Charles Darwin
