Recent odd behaviour with ASCII import, protected blanks, and LyX-Code
I've had an odd problem with the LyX-Code paragraph environment for the past few LyX versions (since 1.1.4, perhaps?). When I import (or paste) ASCII text into any environment, a sequence of N spaces preceding text is shown on the screen as N-1 (blue) protected blanks followed by one ordinary space. Odd but OK. If I look at the DVI output for this imported text in a Standard paragraph environment, the protected blanks remain protected (i.e. they indent). However, if I change the paragraph format to LyX-Code, the screen display still shows protected blanks, but all protected blanks have been removed in the DVI output. (If I *type* protected blanks in the LyX-Code environment, they don't show up as blue protected blanks on the screen, and they work properly in the DVI output; i.e. they indent.) I'm currently using LyX 1.1.6pre1 with tetex-latex-1.0.6-11, but this behaviour has persisted over several previous LyX versions. The behaviour is puzzling, because it is roughly reversed from the expected behaviour. With the source code documentation I'm working on at the moment, however, it's extremely annoying because I have to extensively edit all code I import (delete the "protected blanks" and replace them with ordinary spaces). Any ideas? -- Roger Williams finger me for my PGP public key Coelacanth Engineering Incconsulting turnkey product development Middleborough, Massachusetts wireless * datacomm * DSP * ATE tel +1 508 947-5585 * fax +1 508 861-0278 * http://www.coelacanth.com/

Recommendations for software manual production?
Hi -- We are starting a new software project, for which we have to produce manuals in manpage, HTML, and PDF formats. We're lazy, so we'd like to generate these output formats from a single set of source files; and we already use LyX for our other documentation, so we'd like to use it to generate the source documents. Given the state LyX is at now, what recommendations can any of you offer for the best approach to use for this? DocBook? We're comfortable with LaTeX, but don't have any experience with SGML. (And if Lyx-DocBook sounds like the preferred approach, is there anyone who has got DocBook + Jade + SGMLTools to peacefully coexist on Linux RH6? Prokopis? Drop me email if you got this working.)
