5 questions from a new user

2012-02-24 Thread Pascal Fischer
Hello,

I'm a linguistics-student and want to switch from Word to Lyx (on
Windows). I have 5 beginner-questions:

1. I've read, that it is needed to install spellcheck-dictionaries for
other languages and additional modules (e.g. for linguistic documents)
seperately. Where do I find these and how do I install them so that
Lyx uses them?

2. Does the bundle-installer that includes all additional software
that is needed, install all programs or does it only include these
programs but I have to install each of them seperately?

3. If I want to update Lyx do I only have to install the not bundled?
But how can I keep Latex, Ghostscript, etc. up to date?

4. I've read on the english download-page that the bundle includes
Cygwin. Is this also needed for Lyx on Windows? Because on the german
download page is the information, that the cygwin-version is another
one. And the bundled version of the english download-page is missing
there.

5. How do I enter em-dashes and en-dashes in Lyxx?

I hope you can help me,
Pascal

Re: Image on the Titlepage

2007-11-03 Thread Christian von Lani-Fischer

Hi there,
thanks for your quick answers. I decided to go with Jaime's/
Sebastian's solution and just just hardcode the position of the
picture. Maybe not the most elegant solution but absolutely enough
for me. Once the titlepage is done i'll never have to touch it again
so who cares;)

@Sebastian
To answer your question : Maybe my first mail was not quite clear.
The Latex Code i put in my first mail was producing the output i was
expecting, the logo between the author and the date enviroment on my
titlepage. since i want to do my work in lyx i didn't want to include
too much plain latex source i tried to rebuild this page in lyx. i
inserted the logo using the menu insert-graphic of course put the
logo was always placed on the next page.

I still don't know why i get a page break at this point. My problem
is solved now but if someone knows why this happens, a short
explanation would be great.

Hi there,

i'm currently writung my master thesis with lyx. works fine so far
(i've been using latax/lyx for 3 years now) but i ran into a layout
problem i just couldn't solve. the thing is i want the logo of my
university on the title page, should look something like this :

document class is of cource scrbook

titlehead : name of my university and the faculty i belong to
subject : Masterthesis
title : Some Title
author : some name
picture : university logo.ps
date : hopefully 2007

between these lines are also some vertical spaces(all fixed length,
nothing variable) to make it look pretty. the problem is, the logo
picture and the date are always placed on the the second page and i
just can't figure out why i get a page break here. i assume it has
got something to do with thei tried using plain latex without lyx,
here is the code :

\titlehead{%
\centering\rmfamily Some University\\
My faculty}
\subject{Master Thesis}
\title{some title}
\author{{ }\\\rmfamily My Name\\[1.5cm]
\vtop{\includegraphics[width=4cm]{../images/chap0/university_logo.ps}}
\\[1cm]

}
\date{\rmfamily November 2007}

Surprisingly this works perfect for me. Any Ideas? Don't think it
matters, but I'm using Lyx 1.5.1 on Debian and on Mac OS (with the
MacTex distribution).

Hi there,
thanks for your quick answers. I'll take Uwe's Kreuzeltest-Solution
and use the frameboxes. Should be enough for me, since i only have to
do a short test with 15 questions for my class.

If you're interested, I found this on ctan :

But this seems to be quite old and i didn't get LyX to notice the
document class.

Hi everybody,

i was just wondering if there is some document class that provides
support to create multiple choice tests or if there is a trick to
create some boxes in common document classes, where one can tick
the correct answer. I just didn't find anything suitable.

I'm running Lyx 1.4.3 on MAC OS 10.4.8 (if this is important...)

PSTricks will do it. There's a node package that will create what

No letter document works with lyx

2004-10-25 Thread Hans-Georg Fischer
Hallo,

if I chose as document format one of the letter formats and insert
things like Opening: or Closing: latex complains about errors.

A search in the internet yielded that after
\begin{document}
has to be a
\begin{letter}

and befor \end{document} a \end{letter}

why doesn't lyx insert this two lines.

If I export the letter as latex and insert these two lines by hand
latex doesn't complain anymore.

What am I missing?

Problems with limits and integrals

2002-12-04 Thread Thorsten Fischer
Hi,

since 1.2.1 I experienced a strange behavior of the limits of integral. If I
put the limits above and below the Integral either with \limits or with the
M-m l shortcut it works fine till I save and reopen the document.
After reopening the limit placement changed back to the normal placement
like the one for exponents.

Is this a known bug?

Thanks

Keyboard is stuck

2002-07-10 Thread Thorsten Fischer

Hi,

I'm using lyx 1.2 for a couple of weeks now and is is great. However today I
started writing a text and got a strange behaviour. Everytime I press a key
for the second time , e.g. mm nothing happens. This happens for all keys
including backspace, space and so on.

I couldn't find any help on the list. Has anyone an idea why this happens? I'm
using SuSE 7.3 but it worked fine and I didn't change anything on the system

Below is the output of the Keyboard debugger for a new Document just pressing
l two times

Thanks

apalike bibliography format - commas after journal names

2001-11-29 Thread Will Fischer

Greetings!

I now have citations almost working for my thesis, with one
minor problem: using apalike style, all the journals that aren't
abbreviated (e.g., Science, Nature, Gene) get commas between the
journal name and the volume:

Science, 256 (5057), 622-7.

In contrast, when the name is abbreviated, all is well:

J. Mol. Evol. 42 (2), 183-93.

I am using the following packages:
\usepackage[authoryear,comma]{natbib}
\usepackage{chapterbib}

I have put the changes suggested in the chapterbib documentation into
a copy of the apalike style, called myapalike.

The document class is my university's thesis style, based on amsbook.

I know this isn't really a lyx problem, but ... any clues?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Formatting: endfloats+short captions, PDF fonts

2001-11-19 Thread Will Fischer

Greetings lyxers!

I have a few problems formatting my thesis (which is of course must be
turned in quite soon), and am looking for help.

All these queries relate to lyx-1.1.6fix3-1 on redhat 7.1 linux.
My thesis is set up ambitiously as a multipart document using a style
file for I.U. theses that is based on the book class. I include each
chapter after the chapter heading; I need to have a bibliography and
figures at the end of each chapter. Currently, each chapter has a
separate bibligraphy inset, as suggested on Herbert's tips page.

1. float placement (RRRGH!)
I can get my figures at the end of the chapter using the package
endfloat, but it puts in a separate page in front of the
   references that says this:

[figure 1 should go about here]
[figure 2 should go about here]
[figure 3 should go about here]
etc.
Not good. It also prints a list of figures, but doesn't use the
short captions like the lyx LOF does.

If I put in a Figures section after the bib inset, I always get
page that is blank except for the section label Figures before
the first figure; if I don't put in the section paragraph (which I
DO want), the figures all get the heading bibliography.

I have put in some ERT, like this, to reset the page and the header
(and then I just throw that page away):

   \section{Figures}\addtocounter{page}{-1}

   What is the Better Way?

2. ChapterBib and NatBib
I have followed faithfully the suggestions on Herbert's page for
working with chapterbib in a multipart document: I put in a bibliography
inset at the end of each chapter, and I have \usepackage{chapterbib} and
\usepackage[options]{natbib} in the preamble of each document.
But, bibtex is unhappy about the repeated insets:

The CRAZY thing is that this was working (I thought) last week -- and now it
isn't, and of course I have to turn in the thesis on Wednesday.

Any clues from the loyal lyx crowd?

Re: LyX on a CD

2001-06-11 Thread Thorsten Fischer

 A self-extracting, self-installing LyX4Win would be a great idea, and would
really get LyX into popular use, I think. As for X-servers, Cygwin's is
free, though I don't know if that's as in beer or speech - they seem to
have been incorporated into RedHat. See http://cygwin.com/xfree/

Yes, I know a lot of people who would like to run lyx, but they don't like or
don't have the time to switch to linux. And in my opinion getting lyx to work
smoothly under windows is a lot of work.
It would be really nice and really a big step forward for the popularity of
lyx if we could get this done.
The problem I had, was to find a suitable x-server, because cygwin only works
for win2k I think.

Frames arround equations

2001-05-17 Thread Thorsten Fischer

Hi,

is there a way in lyx to put a frame around an equation? I've written
formulas in math mode and tried to put a frame around them using the \fbox{}
command like you do for equations in Latex. But this isn't working, I get
the error, that the equation isn't finiished and } and $ are missing. I tried
different positions for the fbox command ( inside and outside the math-mode).
Is there another way to do this, or do I have to write my equations in tex?

Thanks

The error seems to be in the last three equitations. Has anyone an idea how
to fix ist? The article AMS is much more suitible for me.

Problems with article AMS

2001-03-28 Thread Thorsten Fischer

Hi,

I'm writing a document in article AMS. When trying to view the DVI / PS I get
strange errors. But when changing the document to normal article The DVI
shows correct. I'm using 1.1.6fix1.
The error seems to be in the last three equitations. Has anyone an idea how
to fix ist? The article AMS is much more suitible for me.
I attached the article AMS version of the document.

Thanks

Thorsten

I had the same problems with ps files generated with the ps-printer-driver
from adobe. I found that tool didn't set the page settings right. I could
correct this by using psresize of the pstools-package. This package should be
available for windows too.

Problems with numpad in 1.16

2001-02-01 Thread Thorsten Fischer

I just upgraded to 1.16. Now, when I fill in a table and try to use the
numpad, the numbers appear in front of the table and not in it. The other
keys are working normally. I'm running on SuSE 7.0 with kde2 and Xfree 4.
The other problem is, that I can't get the point/comma on the numpad working.
The debugger says:
Workarea event: KEYBOARD
WorkArea: Key is `comma' [44]
WorkArea: Keysym is `KP_Separator' [65452]
Using keysym [B]
Workarea Diff: 1761726348
KeySym is KP_Separator[65452] State is [16]
action first set to [-1]
meta_fake_bit is [0]
action now set to [-1]
Key [-1][KP_Separator]
Empty argument!

Has anyone an idea, where and how I can fix it?

works great -- Thanks, Dekel!) when I asked a similar question:

- The Section* environments do not appear in the TOC menu as they
- also do not appear in the "Table of Contents" generated by latex.

- However, you can use the non-starred environments (section, ...),
- and set the section number depth (using layout-document menu [in
- Lyx]) to - "-1"(this will omit the numbering from these
- environments).

... I would just like to thank the group that has
created this fabulous software. I think it is a tremendous piece of work.

Emphatically seconded! You guys are great!

command line export fails

2000-11-02 Thread Will Fischer

Running lyx-1.1.5fix2-1 on RedHat linux 6.2

I type:
me% lyx --export ps Research+TrainingPlan.lyx

A lyx window pops up briefly, then goes away.

lyx types:
About to handle -x 'buffer-export postscript'
We are done!

So, all is well ... but no postscript file appears. Same thing if I
ask for latex. What's up? This is supposed to work, right?

(Why I care -- I am sometimes editing lyx files with a text
editor over a modem connection, and need to make the ps file so I can
make a pdf using ps2pdf -- which works great. But I can't get from
the lyx file to the postscript without sitting in front of my office
computer.)

Thanks for thoughts.

TOC and section numbering

2000-10-26 Thread Will Fischer

Here's my problem: I like to use the TOC to navigate around my
documents, but I don't like to have the numbers in the section,
subsection, etc.

Currently I use the Section environment while I'm writing, then
(when I'm printing final copy) I edit the file with a text editor to
change all the "Section" headings to "Section*". This works, but is
a pain.

Could it be made possible to include the Section* etc. environments
in the TOC?

Thanks,

Ragged Right -- Possible?

2000-09-05 Thread Will Fischer

Is it possible to make Lyx or LaTex output ragged right (unjustified)
text? Although I realize it is totally foreign to the spirit of
LaTex to do it, the journal to which I am submitting insists upon
it. (Why? I can't say).

Re: Bibliography

2000-09-01 Thread Will Fischer

   wfischer:
The output then looks like this: blah [1][2]
when it ought to be this: blah [1-2]

  Herbert Voss:
it's not usual to write it this way, when there are only
two citations, therefore always [1,2], but [1-3].
   . . .

Yes, but, one doesn't get [1,2], but rather [1][2].
Likewise, one gets [1][2][3] instead of [1-3].

  Herbert Voss:
  do you use package{cite}?

I'm using package{natbib}, so the actual citations are formatted
differently, but the content is the same.

Dekel Tsur [EMAIL PROTECTED] reports that:
the citation dialog was completely rewritten, and it is now very
easy to add/change several citations inside a single citation
   inset.

So this complaint of mine may vanish in the next release ...
which is, um, going to be when? About?
