It doesn't like my pdf; I tried several times without success. But I get
pretty good results with direct export from Lyx to OOffice. Following a
tip on Smashwords I've saved the transferred file as .txt and then
reloaded it.

The most accurate way I found until now (working even for complicated

www.pdftoword.com.

From the site:
The PDF files you upload for conversion are deleted straight after

The DOC/RTF files we generate are deleted immediately after we email
you them.
At no stage are your files looked at or touched by the administrator

Ah -- I think I may have found the answer. I first installed tex4ht and
then reconfigured, after which I get the option to export as
OpenDocument. This gives a file with .odt extension, which seems to be
what is needed.

Yeah, and let us know how it goes. I am interested in any problems you
might have during the conversion.

On the generated HTML they may look right, especially on Firefox; but
after importing from Word they will probably look very strange.

Alex.

This wasn't actually what I had in mind -- if you have the latest and
greatest LaTeX under the hood, there actually should be an option to
export OpenOffice.org files. Then you can open that up and, if need
be, save it as a Word doc. One fewer conversion step.

Strictly speaking, BTW, RTF files _are_ Word files: RTF is officially
the non-binary "form" of Word files (up until the recent XML-based
format, which is completely different). This principle was, I
understand, honoured more in the breach.

Thanks to all for replies. I went to the Wiki as suggested and found how
to export files as rtf, which should be loadable into Openoffice
- excellent! I'll make a start on the conversion soon.

Yeah, I should have mentioned that I never managed to get it to work

I have managed to export directly from LyX to OOo. It's far from
perfect (cross-references don't work), but it's better than plain
text. The Wiki was helpful to me in how to do this.

Personally, whenever I had to submit a text in M$ Word format, I do the
following:
1) I export the document in LaTeX.
2) I run the .tex file against bibtex (if needed) and latex in order to
produce necessary output tiles (like .bbl and .aux).
3) I use latex2rtf (http://latex2rtf.sourceforge.net/) to convert the
file in rtf.
4) I finalise the document with OOo, save in in Word format and submit
it.

Of course, you have reserve some time for these steps, but it is
manageable.

Kind regards,
Kimmo
