Seven percent. Documented at least as far back as the Christian bible.

A far more useful discussion would be how many are dyslexic (a lot,
especially if you count both major types), and if there are ways that
users of Lyx could make it easier for them.

It would be interesting for the Lyx website to collect this info.

I assume the posting contains a typo, and should read:

How many are left handed (was: How Many use linux)

2009-09-13 Thread Andrew Sullivan
You can see from the subject that there is an air of irrelevance about
this.

But it seems to me that knowing how many are left handed would,
naturally, lead to enhancements targetted at the left-hand community.

I answer that the customizability and portability of the LyX code base
is sufficient that a typing-able user on any modern desktop-target
platform is in a position to use LyX, and figuring out even rough
numbers for distribution on supported platforms is a distraction to
the LyX community. This is true even if the user is left handed, or
non-Linux using, or whatever.

The scaling for the lyx binary package is a bit out of scale since we moved

a steadily growing userbase using the Debian packages (excluding users using
them indirectly through *buntus and other derivations).

A lot of people on the LyX-Users list help others with problems, and I think
an idea of the breadth and distribution of OS's used with LyX is interesting
and valuable to those people. I'd imagine LyX installation on Windows has
totally different challenges than those on Linux. Until this informal poll, I'd
always assumed that 90% of LyX users were on Linux. Now I know better. Until
this poll I never knew of one specific person using it on OS/X. Now I do.

generally get LyX via their distro's packaging system, and we don't have

Just to kick the ball out of bounds, how do you count cross-platform

heavily under both OSes.

When I first came across LyX (which goes back far enough that the only

outnumbered Windows users. From list traffic, I suspect Linux is
still prevalent (followed by Windows, then Mac), but the "vastly" is

Given that it is free software and therefore nearly impossible to know
what the user community size is, knowing the relative sizes of
segments of the population seems to be a little ambitious.

Just to kick the ball out of bounds, how do you count cross-platform
users? I have it on one XP box and two Ubuntu boxes, and I use it
heavily under both OSes.

When I first came across LyX (which goes back far enough that the only
Windows version was a port that required Cygwin), Linux users vastly
outnumbered Windows users. From list traffic, I suspect Linux is still
prevalent (followed by Windows, then Mac), but the "vastly" is likely no
longer true.

I also use it predominantly on Linux, but occasionally use it on Windows, too.
Have used LyX since, about, oh, 2000, for letters, articles, notes, and a
dissertation.

I've used Lyx on Linux since 1999. Wrote a thesis, a few papers, and numerous
resumes and cover letters.
