Hi all,

Here on the LyX list we use the word MWE to mean the simplest example
that still exhibits the symptom. But MWE stands for Minimum *Working*
Example, and by definition, the file that exhibits the symptom does not
"work". Also, I think I've seen MWE used on various LaTeX venues to
mean the smallest file that works, for a specific feature you want to
incorporate.

Can anyone think of a better name for the tiniest file that exhibits a
symptom?

Thanks,

2021-12-14 Thread Dr Paul Verschueren via lyx-users
It’s not perfect, but I think it is worth pointing out that this is not Lyx
terminology, I have come across it in many communities. I note it has its own
Wikipedia entry:

In computing, a minimal working example (abbreviated MWE) is a collection of
source code and other data files which allow a bug or problem to be
demonstrated and reproduced. The important feature of a minimal working example
is that it is as small and as simple as possible, such that it is just
sufficient to demonstrate the problem, but without any additional complexity or
dependencies which will make resolution harder.

A minimal working example may also be referred to as minimal reproducible
example or short self-contained correct example.

It's working to demonstrate the problem. I don't see a significant problem
with it.

Thanks,

In my view the problem is the acronym itself. I see it used directly and
it is unlikely that a poor lost LyX user will know what it means. I find
this jargon intimidating.

Steve,

However, the example is the minimal document that works at producing the
error; ergo, MWE.

Indeed it is confusing.

What are your thoughts on "minimal example" ?

Note that we have a Wiki page, although it doesn't address your question:

MWE does _not_ mean a working example in the sense of a correct output.
It means a minimal working one which shows the _problem_.
