Math mode with Lyx Aqua

I run Lyx 1.3.4 Aqua on Mac OSX (panther) using a French keyboard. I have two questions, one about superscripts and the other about the math mode. 1- I click on the formula toolbar button and type E=mc^2. The display is: E=mc22 (the caret does not seem to be recognized). 2- Also, letters in
