Re: converting from doc (doc import) - html and LaTeX approach failed

It depends on whether or not you want to import equations as well.
I have been using Word2tex to convert word documents with
mainly equations, and it works fairly well. Some hand-editing is
required, but it is fairly limited. Word2tex is not free, though.
Still, I have found that all the free approaches work very
poorly for equations.

I have converted some word files, and gave up on converting formatting.

I "copy" in libreoffice, and "paste/paste special" in LyX. This
preserves the text and the division of text into paragraphs.

All other formatting is lost, so I re-do that. (headings,
bulleted/numbered lists, emphasizing.) It is mostly scrolling through

the pasted document, using the paragraph type shortcuts (or combobox)
a lot.

figures: I save them from libreoffice, then insert them in LyX
tables: I recreate them.

I also recreate TOC, cross references and math.

I have the impression that there are various complicated conversions
that can preserve a little more, such as the headings and some
formatting. But if I have to go through the entire document anyway,
and fix conversion mistakes, then i might as well do the formatting
manually.

converting from doc (doc import) - html and LaTeX approach failed

Hi,

i'm trying to import a doc file, written in Polish. I'm running
Windows 7 and using LibreOffice 3.4.4.
I've read the wiki page about importing doc and tried writer2latex,
but the result doesn't compile, giving some strange warning about
overwritten command that i was unable to solve (sometimes LyX doesn't
even import the .tex file), and the LaTeX source is unreadable.
Robert Oakes' solution is for Linux only, as i understand.
I've also searched mailining list archives and read about importing
via html, but it didn't work too (LyX said "An error occurred while
running: java -jar htmltolatex.jar -input "testingfile.html" -output
"testingfile.tex" while trying to import html file). Other than that i
didn't see anything in the archives that wasn't 5 or more years old
(and thus clearly outdated).
Is there anything else that i should check?
:(
