Re: Fwd: no accents with dead keys (SOLVED)
I'll answer the questions Jose put forward. I have 2 PC both with Fedora 32 installed (english USA), the same software and using mate as a desktop. The only difference is the keyboard, one has spanish keyboard (installed as spanish with dead keys) and the other has an english keyboard (with international english, USA, with dead keys) and in both the lyx behaviour is the same, with qt5 the dead keys are dead and with qt4 they work; are there other options to add?. The lyx version is 2.3.5.2 Regards Jorge On Sun, Dec 13, 2020 at 5:20 PM José Abílio Matos wrote: > On Wednesday, November 11, 2020 4:11:18 PM WET jorge hernando wrote: > > > Hi Jose > > > > > > I searched old e-mails and I believe I can confirm it's a bug in qt5 > that > > > ts triggered by un unknown mechanism. What I meant are "keyboard input methods", they are used for languages like Chinese or Japanese where the keyboard does not hold all the characters. I am asking if it is a question of configuration. In my case I use kde, calling System Settings->Hardware->Input devices- >Keyboard. There I can choose several items, like the keyboard type, variant (with and without dead keys) and other more advance options. no accents with dead keys (SOLVED)
A few more pieces on the puzzle of the dead keys 1) Does not depend on the linux distribution, Flavio de Melo in his mail wrote that he has Ubuntu 18.04 and I have Fedora 32 2) Does not depend on the desktop; in my PC i use mate but I can also use gnome. With both desktops there is no dead keys at all. 3) This is intriguing. Both in mate and in gnome when I save a file with a new name, the dead keys work perfectly on the name, I can use accents in it. Perhaps there is a clue in the difference between both calls. That's all for the moment. Regards Jorge -- lyx-users mailing list lyx-users@lists.lyx.org http://lists.lyx.org/mailman/listinfo/lyx-users

The previous fedora version I had (the 29) had lyx 2.3.3 and qt5.11 and it worked perfectly. When I installed fedora 32 the deadkeys were effectively dead. However, with featherpad (a qt application) I had the same problem while with nedit (non a qt appl.) had all the dead keys in order. no accents with dead keys (SOLVED)
Hi Some time ago I begun a thread about dead keys not working in lyx that ended up with a quite cumbersome and imperfect solution (it didn't work in formulas and was an unmitigated problem in tables); i.e. to write in a non qt-editor and then paste the text. However, a couple of days ago, Flavio Eler de Melo told me in an e-mail the solution. He has the pc under Ubuntu 18.04 which provides both Qt5 and Qt4. He removed qt5 and compiled lyx (even the latest 2.4.0) with Qt4 and the dead keys worked. I'm in fedora 32 and didn't want anything drastic so I downloaded qt4lib and the lyx sources and run configure with the line ./configure --with-qt-dir=/usr/share/qt4 --with-extra-lib=/usr/lib64 --with-version-suffix and ended up with the executable lyx-2.3.5.2 in /usr/local/bin which runs with Qt4 (the dead keys work perfectly) which coexists with the executable (just in case) lyx which runs with Qt5. I can also confirm that the qt5 5.11 works well. My old setup, fedora 29 and lyx 2.3.3, where all the accents worked had qt5 5.11. By the way, if I write in another application (not qt based) like nedit and made copy and paste with the mouse I obtain the accents but not the newlines, if I insert the file (Insert -> file -> plain text) I obtain the new lines but not the accents (same behaviour if I import the text). Thanks to all of you. I believe I can confirm that this is a qt bug. I updated the app and my combination keys stopped working (as did Ibus X-Sampa, an IPA keyboard layout). After some back-and-forth with the developers, I figured out that the problem was a QT dependency, libqt5svg5 >= 5.9.8. The Debian repos are up to 5.9.5. But it isn't one of the dependencies of lyx, which seems to be using QT4, so there may be something else going on. The system language is Dutch (nl_nl) in both cases. Re: no accents with dead keys
Hi Jorge, I have struggled a long time with dead keys, but only for the cedilla character. I posted several times about that; I can but offer to compare our setups Le dimanche 12 juillet 2020 à 17:02 -0300, jorge hernando a écrit : > Hallo > I have one PC with english keyboard (US international with dead > keys) same here (LyX 2.3.2 - Debian Stretch [yeah I know...]) > [...] the accents work perfectly (e.g. á is " 'a ") when in a > terminal, opening nedit, ooffice, etc. But these are not "QT applications". Could you compare with another such app. (Filezilla? Scribus? Master PDF?...) > but in lyx not only it doesn't work, the dead key is really dead: if > I type ' in lyx it doesn't type anything [...] Can't you even get the apostrophe with ' + spacebar? > > [...] I looked at some .kmap files in > /usr/share/lyx/kbd, [...] I understand that these files are now deprecated, and overridden by the QT settings (can someone confirm that?) > [...] I looked at /usr/share/lyx/bind This is for shortcuts, but of course you want to type accented characters the same way in LyX as in other apps, don't you? So here, working PC with US Intl + dead keys: - my ~.lyx/kbd folder is empty; - in LyX under Tools -> Editing -> Keyboard/Mouse I have no "keyboard remap" specified. This generally allows me to get the accented characters (except the cedilla). What about first trying with a completely blank LyX setup (e.g. renaming your .lyx folder)? > [...] In the mailing list it is mentioned (in 2019) that there is a > workaround related with Qt: to include in .xsessionrc the line > export QT_IM_MODULE=xim > I created the file with that line but didn't work In case you came across a post of mine, I was referring to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ibus/+bug/518056 (especially post #39) But it's about getting the cedilla, not _all_ of the accented characters, but you might want to review this thread. However, the "export QT_IM_MODULE=xim" thing is not a solution by itself, but comes after tweaking some QT config files (mentioned in the thread above). Maybe something got broken there with a QT update? It always happens to me. But let's hope you won't have to dive into this for each and every accented character! I have similar problem with Czech keyboard and it boils down to changes in underlying Qt library, you might be suffering from the same thing. So the bad news is that this is to stay no matter what version of LyX you try, the good news is that you might be able to use workarounds other ppl already pointed to. In the mailing list it is mentioned (in 2019) that there is a workaround related with Qt: to include in .xsessionrc the line export QT_IM_MODULE=xim I created the file with that line but didn't work As now I'm writing in french, which needs all the dead keys combinations, I exclude the use of latex writing style. As conclusion: am I doing anything wrong? The other possibilities I see are: either I'm a lucky guy and I found a bug in lyx or the fedora 32 implementation went askew. Any suggestions? Jorge Hernando I'm not familiar with Fedora, but on Mint (and this presumably also works on Ubuntu) I went into the system keyboard preferences (not LyX preferences) and set the "compose" key (in my case to the right Alt key). So in any text application, the combination Alt+' a and the combination Alt+a ' both produce á (with Alt being the right Alt key). This also works in LyX.
