Before I posted the question, I did try to use the pdf version of the
figure, making sure it had no white region around the edges. I noticed
that it did leave less of a white area around the picture, but it was
still not

It is not clear to me how it is done.
I see on the first tab of the float setting (graphics) the setting for
the scale, width or height,
and on the second tab (clipping) facilities for cropping and positioning
the graphics.
How do you deal with the caption width? I know I can do that with the

Because your image contains the whitespace. I converted your image to a PDF as I assume that your
document should also be a PDF and removed the whitespace. (You can insert images to LyX in every

The caption package does have some useful features, which allowed me to
change the width of the caption (among other things).
But the white space around the graphics itself persists. If I make the
caption as wide as the graphics, the white space now surrounds the
caption as well.
