Replacing the Debian texlive packages with an external TeX distribution
can lead to dependency problems.
(either LyX will not install as no tex package is installed, or you
waste place with a second (local) TeX installation and must assure that
these two do not clash).

I would rather recommend to keep the Debian-packaged texlive (maybe
update/add selected packages in the /usr/local/ tree if necessary).

Depending on the used hardware and other installed programs I'd also
recommend to upgrade to Debian/testing -- this ensures a smooth upgrade
to LyX 1.5.5 and (currently) TeXLive 2007.

At least this is my experience.

So my plans are to get the new TeX collection, update texlive, stick to etch
and afterward follow the advices to install lyx 1.5.6.
Again: Thanks a lot

OK then.

Depending on the number of packages that need to be upgraded, mixing is not
always bad. I was running a mixed system for years before switching to
testing for good.

I agree that with the heavy dependencies of LyX (QT) you might get problems,
though.

Those packages are only for etch and there they work 1.5.5 is in testing and
unstable and there are only minor things fixed in 1.5.6.
(Well depending on what you use ...)

The experimental packages of 1.6beta are a bit outdated I've
to admit.

2005 is in etch afair and those packages should be installed if you've no
installation
of tetex. That's or'ed in the depedency.

If you're using etch Emilios repository is fine but maybe you could try apt-get
in the terminal so that's easier to see what's going wrong. Synaptic seems to
surpress sometimes error messages.

Emilios repository is ok and recommended for Debian/etch.
I'm not sure if Wolfgang is running testing or just wrote testing
over this line to indicate that he's testing this entry.

Well donno if upgrading to lenny now is what he wants and mixing
packages from etch and lenny is nothing I would ever recommend.
So if you switch to lenny this will be an all or nothing choice.

Instead of third-party extensions you might be safer with mixing
Debian/stable with Debian/testing. Add e.g.

deb ftp://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ testing main non-free contrib

Debian/testing provides texlive 2007 und LyX 1.5.6

apt will make sure that all dependencies are met.

If you do not want an "update orgy", ensure that the "update all
packages to latest version" feature is turned off.

good luck
