[M100] New Age Digital Storage Box (NADSBox)

2018-08-18 Thread Jesus R
Team, I know I'm late to the party, but I just purchased a T100 and it
should arrive soon:) I noticed the NADSBox has been discontinued or out of
stock. I'm happy to help to get more made and the proceeds can all go to
the club. Is there anyone to talk to about the design and firmware?

Also, anyone have an extra internal memory module for sale?

Thank You,

JR

[M100] I/O error with disk drive

2018-08-21 Thread Jesus R
Kurt, you were right. Funny thing is I had it apart yesterday and even
after spinning the large pulley it looked like the belt was okay. Turns out
it was denigrated and what was left was tar in its place...what a mess to
clean it. I'll check out the link you provided next.

Thanks,

JR

[M100] I/O error with disk drive

2018-08-24 Thread Jesus R
Team, I got the drive working. Power was not making its way to the main
board from the batteries. This was because the metal wire for the + side of
the top battery was not making contact with the battery. I aligned the
metal wire with the battery and was then able to load floopy.co and
subsequently view and load the content of some disks that came with the
kit. Thanks to all that pitched in!

[M100] program library in WAV format

2018-08-26 Thread Jesus R
Some updates:

I have been testing the save and load function via a Logitech USB to
earphone and microphone interface. This interface came with a gaming
headset. I'm using Audacity to capture and play the file for loading and
saving them on my T100.

As a proof of concept I have some files you can try posted on a temp Google
spreadsheet:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1m7QRN1I5KpJJO_
RKYnwFhmrluDjbYm6bEe_rIgz80ug/edit#gid=0

Setup:
1. Connect the T100's cassette cable to the headphone and microphone jack
of the USB interface. Some computers have these built in.
2. Make sure the volume for the headphone output is 100% and bit perfect.
3. From Basic enter this command which helps with saving the files - sound
off.
4. From Basic enter this command which will clear any pre-existing programs
- new.
5. From the TRS-80 Model 100 manual follow the instruction on page 191 for
Loading a Basic Program from Tape. Here is a link to the manual:
http://www.classiccmp.org/dunfield/kyocera/manual.pdf
Example of filename (caps matter and it must match) - TPL.BA, ZOIDS.BA
6. From Basic enter this command which will confirm you received the code -
LIST
7. Finally, don't forget to save the file to your T100.

Let me know any questions or comments.

Ken, you have been a busy guy:) I didn't realize you were behind the
Virtual-T project. Is it possible to copy and paste code into it? Also,
would a TPDD work with it? If so, it would help me tremendously with my WAV
archiving project.

Thank You,

That would be cool. It needs the ROM, but I haven't found much on it...not
even a manual for it.

Hello, Jesus - thanks, I didn’t realize it was for that purpose. I’d
thought it was an analog-to-digital converter for measuring low-voltage
analog signals. I love experimenting with things like that, but I’m
wondering - is the device “unusable” without the ROM software? I have a
REX and could conceivably download the ROM software if available somewhere,
but I don’t have experience with that. (My REX is currently
underutilized. I use it for backups and to help organize my files, mainly.)

Hi JR,

Also, in VirtualT, under the Tools -> Peripheral Devices -> COM tab,
there is an "Enable Capture" checkbox that will cause all RX and all TX
data flowing through the COM port to be displayed. You can check if
BASIC is actually sending data to the UART by checking this capture report.

Yes. I can and it works fine in both directions.

Can you pass data in both directions from a simple serial terminal on
your PC? Without flow control involved on either end?

Try "cool term" if you need a Windows serial terminal that's easy to
deal with. If you can't pass traffic or you get serial framing errors,
you might have a bad serial port / UART on your Model 100.

[M100] program library in WAV format

2018-09-30 Thread Jesus R
Your welcome and I'm glad it's working out. The system is dialed in now and
I'm happy to share the setup.

There are several tasks and I'll explain each below:
1. Download the files and rename them on my computer - I'm not really sure
this step is needed, but it doesn't take up much time since I'm using a
naming changer application to bulk change .ba to .do in the file name.

2. Load the files a few at a time into my T100 and play them back into my
capture device - In order to transmit data back to the unit I'm using a USB
to serial cable and null modem cable. Because of limited space you can only
load so many programs at a time. Teeny has been helpful here because it's a
small and effective application and works with the drive emulator Laddiecon
running on my PC from DOS. After loading a batch use these command in
series on the unit: load"filename, csave"filename.ba, kill"filename.do,
new.

3. Post capture processing - For capturing I'm using my sons gaming
headphone USB to Logitech microphone/headphone adapter which support 44.1
captures and playback. I'm using Audacity set to record and play from the
Logitech device, Windows Direct Sound, sample rate of 44.1, playback volume
100%, record volume 100%, and record in mono. These are all selected from
the main screen of Audacity. First you press Record and then you
enter csave"filename.ba on the unit and when its done I stop the recoding
right away. This produced a recoding that is way to low for direct usage at
around -31db. I now move the cursor over the recording and press Control
and Alt together to select the entire recording. Then I go to Effect and
select Amplitude and add 25db to the recording and press Enter. This volume
gain allows you to play back the track at 100% volume on your source and
have the level be just right for the unit to accept it.

4. Prepare the Google Excel sheet and upload the files to my website and
they are ready for use.

Let me know any questions you might still have.

Jesus R

---

Thanks for setting this up! I’ve downloaded several games and a couple of
utilities through my iPhone, with no problem. A simple joy from the user’s
perspective, but I realize it represents a lot of work behind the scenes.

Perhaps I missed it in a prior part of the thread, but it would be great to
document your lessons learned in terms of how to save files in a reliably
shareable digital audio format - what sort of processing you had to do in
Audacity, etc. I’ve tried using a good quality digital recorder before in
place of a cassette tape recorder, and at least for me, it didn’t “just
work...” :) Clearly, I didn’t stumble on quite the right combination of
parameters.

Best wishes,
Anthony

[M100] program library in WAV format

2018-09-30 Thread Jesus R
It's working fine here:) If you use the recoding as is it will be to low to
be useful. This is why I increase the amplitude in software by +25db. This
produces playback of about -6db and free of clipping and the unit finds and
loads data effortlessly without the use of an inline amplifier. Phones,
computers, and iPods all work here with volume set to 100%.

_

I must say I am surprised that i have not heard people getting unrepeatable
results using .WAV audacity files.

Where I left this off myself, in my own efforts, is that the typical 1Vpp
signal swing generated by most modern earbud type audio devices (phones,
mp3 players etc) is not sufficient to drive the M100 input reliably.

It works sometimes and not others.

M100 is meant to have 4Vpp drive IIRC.

I basically gave up on this, since I didnt want to have a post-amplifier...

I forgot to mention in step 3 that once I have the file adjusted for
amplitude I just export the file to WAV saving the album and genre tags as
prompted. I then got o File and select Close and do not save the session
when prompted.

2018-09-30 Thread Jesus R
The idea is to play the file you need directly into the unit. The browser
plays the file on click to no need to drag and drop anything.

MP3's filter out certain frequencies and I rather not worry if its okay in
all cases.

--

hi, can we download all the files from a simple directory, rather than a
spreadsheet? It would be a lot faster! drag and drop...

Sorry if you answered this already but how important was using .WAV file vs
.MP3?

thanks

CAS2WAV application on the off chance that it could work, but I could not
get it to work. I'm not a coder so someone else would have to take up the
effort to modify it. In the meantime I'll continue with the slo-mo scheme:)

One other idea that hasn't been explored is modifying CAS2WAV code to
work for the M100. Then we could generate perfect files rapidly.

The m100 can receive files via the cassette port from almost any audio
source. The trick is to use a an audio transformer. Something like an
8 ohm to 1.2k ohm. The 8 ohm end connects to the output of the audio
device. The 1.2k ohm end connects to the ear end of the m100 cassette
cable. I have done many experiments with this over the years.

[M100] program library in WAV format

2018-10-02 Thread Jesus R
My goals are simple...have access to the files on the go via my computer or
phone. The files are archived in lossless WAV and anyone that wants to
convert them to lossy MP3 is welcome to. I'm not going to apply additional
filtering and in my use case I'm not worried about the files size.

Link to WAV archive: www.sonore.us/m100

Jesus R

-

I played a bit with Audacity, and I have a couple of comments, wrt settings.

1) 8 bit vs 16 bit. If like me you are interested in the actual files,
and size matters, then consider saving the file in 8bit format. this saves
1/2 the data.
2) filtering. Applying a low pass filter at ~18 kHz as a post processor
to the captured waveform reduces peaking. This matters a bit - the
software limits the peak to peak voltage to +/- 1V. Peaking reduces the
average peak value that can be obtained.

What is CloudT?

Link to WAV archive: www.sonore.us/m100

Jesus R

-

Yeah it's definitely a coding task.

Well if I find some time I could add a audio file export feature to CloudT.

CloudT already supports accessing http files and Google Drive, so I have
code for getting files into CloudT.

Making perfectly tuned, compact audio files is possible.

Actually, since it could generate the audio file or stream it, maybe we
wouldn't even need to store the audio files. Just play it straight from
CloudT into the Model 100, since CloudT runs on iPhones and Android phones.

But I wouldn't hold my breath.

[M100] program library in WAV format

2018-10-02 Thread Jesus R
Hooking this setup to my AP would be a mess:) It’s odd that you are
having the exact opposite experience compared to mine. My iPhone, my
Mac, my PC, and my iPad all work. I just transferred a random program
with a standard cable and used it on my T100.

If you look at the capture directly from the unit as is it’s way to
low in amplitude so I'm not surprised a unit to unit connection will
not work. The tape drive is clearly raising the gain and this is why
you have to play with the volume on it. I could make you a file at
+31db to see if your unit can hear it.

Link to WAV archive: www.sonore.us/m100

Jesus R

-

I think you should look at the waveforms you
captured though. They look distorted, relative to M100 output signals.
I think this is tricky enough that in order for it to be truly useful, the
details need to get ironed out.
As I said, I have tried your files with 2 android phones, an MP3/WAV
player, and a PC. I didn't get a lot of success. I would love to find a
magic recipe, ideally with a bog standard cable.

Interesting to note - if you cross wire two M100s and try to CSAVE on one,
and CLOAD on the other... it wont work. Not enough signal swing.

Files are loaded in/out of the emulation using the cassette commands, but
without real audio going on. I have hooks into the virtualized ROM to let
me feed file bytes without going through a/d conversion.

Jesus,

I'm not sure if you are running Windows or Linux on your PC. If Windows,
you can try mComm. There is a way to inject TS-DOS or TEENY onto a
100/102/200/NEC machine. If you are running Linux then LaddieCon or
LaddieAlpha is your only choice. I could send you the ASCII file that is
used to create either TS-DOS or TEENY and you could transfer it over
using a telcom capture.

Jesus,

  Correction to your Usage Instructions:

Change: 2. From BASIC on your unit type: cload"cas:filename.ba"
and press Enter.

To: 2. From BASIC on your unit type: cload"filename" and press
Enter.

The CLOAD command only works with the CAS: (cassette) device, so
specifying it will cause a SN (syntax) error. Also the .BA extension
is not necessary, and is not normally specified. The CSAVE and CLOAD
commands only work with the "tokenized" BASIC programs (as saved in
the machine's internal file space), so the .BA extension is assumed,
and will not appear in the file name header in the .WAV file (or on
cassette).

I have used this method myself, but prefer using the original
cassette tapes, and exercising the CCR-81a. :-)

Peter
