David, I made a booboo, ok, have you ever made a mistake when writing email?
I
wrote from my iPhone and somehow the message didn't go where I thought it was
going.
I still stand by what I said, that XFAT is a good solution, for using an
external hd on both Mac and Windows.
Thanks for
I am sure it is an excellent solution and I do not want to discourage you
from posting.
It was just unlikely that anybody would have seen your helpful suggestion
because of the top quoting and you may not have been aware of that. That is
why I suggested deleting the forwarded content before
Top quoting can accidentally happen when replying from an iPhone, I know
this from experience, usually when this occurs I cancel and start all over
again. Just good to know that your message is above that signature sent
from my iPhone. Top quoting is indeed difficult to start going through
Just a hint here. I have accidentally done the same thing a few times. It
didn’t take me long to learn that when replying on an IOS device, it does not
always place you at the beginning of a message where you would want to type.
What I have started doing is double tapping to find out where
Hi all. I tried formatting to xfat I can keep files that are bigger than 4 gig
in size, but when I connected the drive to a Windows machine, it didn't
recognise that the drive had been formatted properly. Is there something else I
need to do to make windows recognise the xfat format?
Cheers
I had a similar problem with XFat, that’s why I suggested MSDos fat. When I
put the drive on my air port extreme, not even my mac would see it. However,
with MSDos fat it does.

I would like to do a back-up to my external hard drive, I know it is done
through time machine. Would someone be kind enough as to tell me step by
step how to do this? For instance, do I have to highlight the external hard
drive first before going in to time machine, etc.

When you plug the external drive into your Mac, you should be prompted if
you want to use it as a Time Machine backup. Remember that Time Machine erases
all data from a partition, so if you have data on the drive, be aware of that
fact.
If Time Machine doesn't come up, go into System
I am re-reading what you say here John, now it is a 1TB drive and so far
nothing else on it but it would seem a bit wasteful to use a 1TB drive
simply for back-up purposes. I am wondering if I shoudld partition the
drive in that case. Alternatively I do have a 125GB drive and wonder is
this
What about the current back-up John, does it get over-ridden? I do not want
to keep it. No time machine did not come up when I plugged in the disk, I
wonder why this is.

How do I format an external hard drive to work on my Mac? Prior to this I
used it for backing up Windows files.

With Time Machine, it should automatically format it for you. That's why I
warned you about data being erased because that happens during the process.

Well, remember that Time Machine will eventually fill a disk over time. If
you want, you can partition it in half.

I am not completely clear so let me ask the following questions?
1. Is there anywhere I can read about dividing an external drive?
2 If I was doing a back up 4 times a year for example, I would not want to
keep each back up only the most recent one so I am not clear what you have
already said
Remember that Time Machine backs up your system on a schedule. If you are
only going to plug in the drive 4 times a year, that's fine, but that's
probably not wise. I'd do it a lot more than that and reserve a partition for
back ups.
I believe on my website in the, How To for Mac OS
Try accessible event. You have to pay a bit but it should work.
Good luck.

I like leaving mine plugged in. It does the big backups at night and the
