I have been having similar problems.
One thing that sometimes seems to help me is, instead of stopping reacting in
messages, to cycle between the reading of headers or messages, and I think this
is the third one that sometimes comes up, but I can't remember offhand what it
is.

can navigate it ok, the appearance changes, or Having interacted with a
message, when I stop, I am thrown out in to somewhere I didn't expect to be,
and can't get back to my messages without some

Often, when you're not allowed to shut down or quit an application, it's
because there's a dialogue box open. Use the Window chooser (VO-F2-F2) to see
what's there.
Have you looked for someone to give you some basic Mac and VoiceOver training?
It might help you get up and
the only way I have the issue is if the thread has a lot of messages. I run in
classic view if that makes a difference.
