Can I just comment now that this problem hasn't gone away under Mountain Lion.
Have filed a bug (two actually) on this issue.

Hi Dónal,
No, sorry, this is from memory. It might have been a little over a year ago
that I reported the problems with Java Preferences. And not all universities
use Blackboard, but some of the alternatives also have accessibility issues.

yes you're right there. We use moodle which isn't quite as bad as blackboard
but stil has issues.
Not to worry about the bug ID. I was just going to put it in one of the notes.
Thanks Esther.

Hi Paula,
There's another way to navigate to the tabs in Java Preferences without having
to use the TrackPad in a hit or miss fashion, but I thought you might only need
to get to the Network pane, so the trackpad instructions would have been
easier to use. I should have guessed that you would

Hi Paula,
Hang on there. I now remember that there are some accessibility issues in
navigating Java Preferences. I reported this to Apple the last time
in to the finder window.
Thanks anyway *smile*
Take care

Hi Lynne,
There's a genuine accessibility issue with the Java Preferences app, in that
you can't navigate to the other tabs with VoiceOver when one is selected. So
routing the mouse cursor doesn't work before clicking with VO-Shift-Space,
because you can't get to another tab. And I remember

yes it is. I don't do lyn's method, but even though I do something similar
it is hit and miss, mostly for me, miss. lol! but it will take practice.

Can you do a vo shift space on the tab using voice over? Since I don't play
with the java prefs I won't be of much help but hopefully it's a push in the
right direction.

Hi Paula,
Hang on there. I now remember that there are some accessibility issues in
