[Mac-access]: Keystroke to read the whole stinkin' screen

Re: [Mac-access]: Compatible Mac Keyboards

2015-04-05 Thread Ann Byrne
Because I don't like the touch on the Apple keyboard, I bought a
McAlly keyboard instead. it was inexpensive, had a great feel, and
only some of the time would it respond to the VO keys. So I'm back
with the Apple, but I would like one that more give when I push the keys.

Hi!

I'm looking at other keyboards to use with my Mac other than the one
shipped with the Mac or the one you buy from Apple, I've been using
a Bluetooth keyboard and there's nothing wrong with the board per
say though I'm very much impressed with the look and feel of the
latest Logitech offering I'm using on my Windows machine, the MX800.

I did a Google search on compatible Mac keyboards and discovered the
Logitedh diNovo keyboard, its a Bluetooth board and seems to be very
highly regarded so I thought I'd give it a try, I've ordered one and
I should have it after Easter though I do warn anyone considering
this keyboard that it will set you back around $100.

If anyone on the list has tried one of these boards then I'd be most
interested in hearing hwat you think or perhaps you've tried another
Mac compatible keyboard offering.

[Mac-access]: Transferring files from the computer to the iPad?

My client has a CD of instructional files she would like to listen to

these files availabel to her? I haven't seen them yet. I know I can
convert them to .mp3 on the Windows machine, but how then to get them

Thanks for the help.

announce the visible rows and columns. This is the same when you
filter your tables: navigating with VO keys will not appear any
different, but if you navigate with the arrow keys alone you'll only
see the filtered rows and columns. Using VO keys to navigate can get
you into mischief as the VoiceOver cursor selects invisible cells,
but the keyboard cursor does not, and this can lead to undesired results.

[Mac-access]: Music

2014-11-15 Thread Ann Byrne
Can I play .mp3 files on the Mac without going through iTunes? Will
it play .wma files? If I paste my music library from the PC, mostly
.mp3 files but a few .wma's, into the iTunes library, will iTunes
convert them or do I have to do something??? I have a .midi folder I
would like to transfer. Will the Mac play that???

thanks a bunch,

Ann

suggest plugging it in when it needs to charge anyway.

Re: Help with browsing the net.

Hello Kaz

Before I go any further, I strongly encourage you to use the list
archives pages. You will find a great deal of the information
there. You can find the archive page at:

There's also our own archive but for the moment I think you'll find
that one more than sufficient. Of course, this does not prohibit
you from asking questions, not at all. I'm just trying to save you
time and effort.

Despite what some of the so-called accessibility gurus biased
towards Windows would have you believe, there is a great deal of
merit in browsing the Internet with VoiceOver and Safari. Edit
boxers just work as you find them, no need to press enter on them as
you would with, for instance, Window-Eyes. In fact, when I go back
to that application it makes me wonder how on earth I ever used it!

I hope you get your use out of the Mac and I urge you to think about
acquiring the "Take Control" series of books which have a great deal
of information regarding how you use a Mac. If you want to know
more about these titles, which we offer at an 80 percent discount to
our members, feel free to write to us off list, .

Also, if you press "Command+Control+Option+F8", you'll be placed
into the "VoiceOver Quick-start" guide. That will give you the
basics of VoiceOver usage, at least, enough to give you the concepts
of using VoiceOver. VoiceOver differs from many Windows-based
screen-reading applications in as much as it presents you with a
webpage in a similar way to that which those with vision get. This
differs from the molly-coddling approach which they take under
Windows with the "MSAA" environment.

Feel free to come back with any further questions at any time. I am
sure the list members will make you feel welcome. But speaking on
behalf of the list owners, (myself and Lynne), welcome to Mac Access
and, more importantly still, welcome to the world of Mac. Once you
get over the differences you'll never go back!

you've already selected your flash drive from

type "Special" into the dialog text box, or you
can navigate through the Finder tree view menu

cmd-shift-g shortcut is most useful when you
have a particular folder you want to get to --
often many levels deep -- and you know the exact pathname.

Re: Transferring files to the Mac

So what I did was, on the PC in windows 7, remove all the files from
the flash drive, format it, return the files, use eject to release
the drive, and then take it back to the Mac. which saw it just
fine. then I had to remember to use eject before removing it from the Mac.

This transition thing is totally awful! thanks for the help.

Re: Transferring files to the Mac

2012-06-24 Thread Ann Byrne
They are my miscellaneous flash drives, with mostly documentation,
but a little music, some .exe files, just a bunch of stuff I carry
around to student computers. The Apple spoke a message about the
drives not having been ejected correctly, and if I could figure out
how to do it the Mac would fix the drive; but I couldn't figure it
out. I went back to the PC, where Windows 7 read everything without
a hitch, and in the context menu went to 'eject' and pressed enter,
hoping that that would fix whatever was confusing the Apple, but it didn't.

Transferring files to the Mac

2012-06-24 Thread Ann Byrne
I had hoped to transfer some documents---actually, all of my
documents--from the PC to the Mac. But when I put in the flash
drive, I get the message that the disk cannot be read. The only one
of my four flash drives that the Mac is happy to look at is the NVDA
installation disk. I would have expected the Mac at least to read
the list of folders.

Am I missing something???

Re: New Take Control Book Available now!

2012-05-09 Thread Ann Byrne

Hey, Lynne,

A windows user for the last twenty years, I finally bought a used Mac
Mini. So far, I hate it.

So what I would like to do is purchase probably every Take Control
book there is. But when I go to the web site to make selections,
JAWS can't figure out the radio buttons for paying. I have a Visa
card and a Paypal account, but I'm in the US so money would have to
be translated. Can you rescue me???

thanks.

Ann

Re: Getting to the ports to set up e-mail

2012-02-24 Thread Ann Byrne
erver from the pop up menu, then
choosing to "Edit SMTP Server List…" (the second
set of instructions that start with "1"), but
the detailed instructions would depend on your
specific server configuration. Again, you'd end
up selecting the "Advanced" tab to make your
changes to port number. There is an option with
radio buttons to select either using the default
ports (25, 465, or 587) or to use a custom port
(and fill in the number in the text box).

This is the sort of material that I never
remember, and that the "Take Control" guide
series supplies so well. So I really hope that
they have an update to the volume on Apple Mail in Snow Leopard for Lion.

Esther
