about installing applications .
I followed your instructions , when i open the dmg file in downloads with
command o, i see the application file , plus the shortcut to applications
folder.

I've downloaded a file image, and dragged it to the applications folder.

How do I know when a application per has been installed?

Just open the disk image file as you would normally open any mac
app. It will automatically mount on your system, and you can access
it from the finder as normal.
After you get the installer completed, you can simply close the
window, and unmount the image by using command-e (for eject) in

think of the image as a zip file or a folder that is put in your drives list
which can be accessed from any ware in the finder with the key stroke, cmd
shift c. Once you think of that you should be all right.
