I don't know much about Time Machine wasting drives (I've never had
problems)... but for the command that you need to type, it is this:

ps -ef | grep fsck_hfs

The character between -ef and grep is the pipe | (shift-backslash).

You'll see one entry that ends in the end of the above line (grep fsck_hfs),
but what you would be looking for would be something else.

Tom,

What Mac OS are you using and what version of Firefox?

Thanks. It’s nice to know one is not the only one in the leaky boat.

[MacGroup] HDDs killed by TimeMachine?

2017-02-10 Thread Nelsn Helm
I set TimeMachine to not back up partitions I use for back-ups.
I changed the name of one of those partition.
The OS changed the partition name in Disk Utility, but not in the TimeMachine
do not copy list/
Time machine tried to copy.
Now, the partition does not mount. TechTool Pro 9 does not mount or cure.
DiskWarrior reports: hardware failure (-36, 2747) but does not mount.
I google, find:

“My disk isn't dead, it just has a sick filesystem, as proven by the
fact that if I wait long enough, DiskWarrior can try to do something with it.
“The disk activity was a clue.
“I suspected that TimeMachine or something else on the mac is trying to
fsck the file system in preparation for mounting. Unfortunately that takes
HOURS on this large volume full of time machine backups.”
“So opened Terminal and typed: ps -ef ' grep fsck_hfs and there was the
culprit:
0 67332 18 0 6:26am ?? 1:02.06
/System/Library/Filesystems/hfs.fs/Contents/Resources/../../../../../../sbin/fsck_hfs
 -y /dev/disk5s2
“To kill it, type kill followed by the second number from the left, in
this case: kill 67332
“The disk activity stops, and you can then run DiskWarrior.”

SO I open the Terminal to follow instructions ^,
but the HDDs and volumes do not mount,
and my terminal window does not look like theirs.

AppleCare says Western Digital hardware problems are not their problems.

Please help

The Let’s Encrypt site gives free certs. If your
provider lets you bring your own cert, this is certainly less expensive.

Let’s Encrypt is sponsored by a large number of
well-known Internet powers, including Akamai, Cisco, Facebook, Google and
Mozilla. They were established with a grant from the Ford Foundation. The goal
is to make all Web traffic encrypted. They aren’t the only ones with this goal.

Re: [MacGroup] What about converting Kindle to ePub?

2017-02-10 Thread John Robinson
Thanks so much Lee, I had looked at Calibre, but unless I can get a backup from
someone such as yourself I am uneasy trusting a firm I know nothing about.

I’ll give it a try, I have maybe 20 books I need to convert, I haven’t bought
an Amazon book since iBooks became available due to the way I use the saving of
important info. with iBooks.

IX charges $49.95 for an SSL certificate.

I don’t plan to purchase a certificate for any of my sites. None of them
collect money.

I wonder how pervasive this will become?

I use Calibre to store my ebooks. It can convert between MOBI (Amazon) and EPUB
(almost everyone else) formats. The gotcha in converting to EPUB from MOBI is
many of the Amazon ebooks have DRM. There is a plugin for Calibre called deDRM
that works pretty well to remove it.

For many of my uses, neither format is very useful.

The MOBI format doesn’t natively handle mathematical formulae at all, so few of
the math/physics/engineering tomes are in that format.

The EPUB format is really just HTML5, so it can theoretically do technical
stuff with MathML, but none of the ebook readers can handle any but the
simplest MathML constructs.

So, most of the technical stuff is still using PDF.

Calibre can handle all three formats in a personal library.

Re: [MacGroup] Safari

2017-02-10 Thread John Robinson
Anne,

Work through this, call Apple Care, they are so helpful. Normally when there
is a problem Apple needs to fix we get an update without undo delay, other
companies not always so. AND for me being able to use ApplePay from within
Safari is worth its weight in gold. Last month one of my chip cards was hacked
from an online vendor, almost $700.00 charged to my card from Germany. If we
ApplePay users will beat the heck out of the places we shop on line this kind
of thing will never happen. I work for State Farm & I pestered them to death
over wanting to pay my premiums & Credit Card with ApplePay. Their response
was they had little interest. Now I pay with ApplePay using their App &
authentication with my fingerprint. Other browsers may never work with
ApplePay, that will be up to Apple. Once in a blue moon I'll go to a site that
doesn't support Safari, they will receive a curt note from me with saying I'm
their customer & they need to support what I like, I shouldn't be forced into
what they like, & I can shop elsewhere.

Look for the articles on browser hacking, Safari is usually much safer.

Perhaps you could turn off your Safari extensions, then try some of the similar
tasks again you’ve seen Safari freeze with. Or, do a re-boot in Safe Mode (Mac
Help), then try Safari again. Just a couple of thoughts.
