Re: [MacGroup] Supreme Court deals a blow to Apple Pay

2018-07-02 Thread Beth Phillips
How timely a conversation as I am in the process of evaluating whether I want
another Fitbit device or spring for an Apple Watch. I'm on my second Fitbit
Charge HR and have had problems with both devices that upon investigation seem
to be known issues with the devices, but not ones that Fitbit wants to backup
beyond their 1-year warranty. They don't cover their replacement devices either
because they say their warranty only covers the original, not any replacement
products. (Does anyone know Apple's policy if they have to replace your Watch?)
I just received a third-party replacement part today that I'm hoping will
resolve a current issue I'm having with one of the two Fitbits I have now. If
it doesn't I'm probably looking at a new tracker sometime in the near future.

As far as Fitbit tracking steps, it counts things like mixing up cake batter by
hand as steps. (The first time that happened I almost dropped the bowl of
batter when it started vibrating to let me know I had hit 10,000 steps for the
day.) I had one friend tell me it tracks steps when she sits in her rocking
chair. From personal experience I know if I simulate working a speed bag it
will track the punches as steps. It also counts when I'm weed eating and moving
the weed eater back and forth, basically standing in one spot. So it can be a
bit on the high side with how many steps you actually walked. But hey, if she
is trying to earn more points through her Humana app than she may want that
"feature". J

I'd be curious to hear from anyone who has used both Fitbit and Watch as to
which they prefer and why. I know there are all the added benefits of the Watch
allowing me to answer phone calls, etc, but honestly that's not something I
need as I generally have my phone with me. If I do spring for the Watch it
would be the cheaper non-cellular version. Being totally frustrated with
Fitbit's quality of late, I was leaning towards the Watch but then I wasn't
sure about the activity tracking. Fitbit's software allowed me to categorize
different activities such as Martial Arts, Zumba, Walking, Dancing, Gardening,
etc. so I could go back later and see what type of workout I had on a given
day, but I wasn't sure if the Watch could do that. Somewhere I read it only
tracked walking, running and biking as specific activities.

Thought I'd share this link to a pretty in-depth article on Fitbit vs Apple
Watch that came out back in January in the UK. I just found it over the
weekend, but haven't had a chance to really dig in and digest it all, but it's
on my reading list to see which direction I may want to go if I can't get my
Fitbit working again. It also has a link to compare the various Fitbit devices'
features that I'll be taking a look at too.

I suspect this is right. I have a pretty good Omron pedometer, designed to be
worn at waist level. It is basically an accelerometer that counts steps by
measuring the acceleration and deceleration as I walk or run. The Apple Watch
is on my wrist and I’m much more likely to shake my wrist around, adding
phantom steps.

I did an experiment this morning. The dog took me to Hays-Kennedy park and I
steadily walked on the track while counting my steps. I wore the following:

• Omron pedometer near my right hip clipped to the waistband of my shorts.
• iPhone in my left pocket running the Pedometer++ app.
• Apple Watch on my left wrist.
• Garmin Vivofit on my right wrist.

Here are the results:

• 2578 = my count of the number of steps
• 2564 = Omron (0.5% low)
• 2607 = iPhone (1.1% high)
• 2702 = Apple Watch(6.6% high)
• 2637 = Garmin (4.1% high)

It seems the ones near the hips are most accurate.

PS/ Pedometer++ has the capability to average in the count from the Apple
Watch. I turned that off in its preferences.

PPS/ The Apple Watch may have been skewed because I was holding a very active
leash in my left hand most of the time.

THAT’s Crazy, thanks Bill…I want my daughter to see all these emails as she
assumes FitBit is the correct one, and with Humana she would receive a bigger
bonus…she is an exercise nut, almost 50 but she goes every day and has the
figure of a 20 yr old…now with being rewarded she wants her numbers to be a
high as she can get. The FitBit’s kept breaking so she wanted the Apple
Watch…in reality it may be the correct one.

My buddy & I had FitBit battles (before we both went with Apple Watches). He
would always beat me in number of steps every day. His job was stocking shelves
at a grocery, but the FitBit counted those movements as steps! I even tried to
beat his numbers by strapping the FitBit to an electric drill and let it whirl
around for a while. I still lost! Now with our Apple Watches, our steps are
similar.

Hi John,

Part of the difference could come from where she wears the fitbit. After some
discussions in our family (back when there was a friendly competition about who
could rack up the most steps), experimentation showed that many more steps got
registered if the fitbit was on a sock/shoe than if it was near the waist, and
near the waist registered more than near the neck.

The pedometer was quite a bit more accurate. Hays-Kennedy park has a paved
track that’s a little over 0.6 miles around. I did two laps and counted my
steps. The pedometer was right on and the watch was about 8% high.

I think the watch uses GPS for distance, so that might be more accurate
 than the pedometer.

My daughter works for Humana, they give gift cards for documented exercise.
Last Christmas she had close to $600.00 to use.

We gave her a new model 3 AppleWatch for Christmas & it has continually shown
less of a workout than she is getting. Her old Fitbit shows considerably more.
She has worked with Apple to adjust settings for her stride but it’s still not
accurate. I think she needs to have it replaced. In her case accuracy is
money.

Harry,

Easier. Double click on the bottom button. Swipe to the card you want, hold
the Watch close to the reader, done.

If your listening to a book or music & controlling it from the Watch the double
click to pay pauses & once the transaction is over the book resumes. Very
simple & you don’t need a phone if your using a Cellular Watch.

The watch has a speaker and microphone. There are two ways to use it as a
phone. If you have the more expensive version of the Watch 3, it is a
stand-alone cell phone. The lesser versions use the cell phone in your pocket,
connected via Bluetooth. I have the cheaper version of Watch 3.

You can make calls by talking to Siri on the watch, just like on the iPhone.
When somebody’s calling you, the watch makes a ringing sound and tingles on
your wrist.

It’s like the old Dick Tracy wrist phone without video. I use it quite often.

There’s not much difference, except you don’t have to dig out the phone. Just
push the button on the side of the phone twice and hold it by the sensor. When
it catches, you feel a little wiggle from the phone.

I used it in Subway a few weeks ago and the woman behind me in line thought I
was stealing a sandwich because she didn’t see any way I could have paid. It
looks a little magical.

Lee,

Newbie syndrome, first few days I had the Watch, when it told me to stand I
would pull over at earliest convenience & get out to walk around the car.
Grief. And when it tells me I only closed two of my circles yesterday & I can
do better today I feel like such a failure.

I was given an Apple Watch for Christmas. I have to admit ApplePay is the
nicest feature of the gadget. Other things come close such as answering a call
with it instead of digging the phone out of my pocket, and unlocking a Mac by
just sitting down in front of it.

For a while I was obsessed with filling in the circles. That’s worn off because
I compared the step count on the watch with that from a good pedometer—not even
close! The watch was much higher.

Re: [MacGroup] Supreme Court deals a blow to Apple Pay

2018-06-30 Thread John Robinson
If the folks that have an Apple Watch would use ApplePay the merchants would be
overwhelmed & more quickly adopt the system. I see the Watch on a large number
of people, I’ll walk up & ask most of them if they are using it for ApplePay,
90% say no. I tell them they are forgoing it’s best feature, unless you
include health monitoring. Most tell me they will get serious just to get this
creep away.

Re: [MacGroup] Supreme Court deals a blow to Apple Pay

2018-06-30 Thread John Robinson
There is a restaurant in Bowling Green that my wife & I love to grab lunch.
Two visits ago the owner happened to be taking the orders & Payment. I ask him
if he had ApplePay & he said no. I said, shame on you, it’s the safest way for
your customers to pay you. No smiles, but when we went back 3 weeks ago they
took ApplePay. Every once in awhile I get lucky.

I’ve never had a merchant ask me either, rather I’m explaining what it is, how
it works, & I’ll shop where it’s offered. This week I went to ACE to get a
part, the ApplePay was not working, I said I shop there because of Apple & they
need to make the repairs.
