I rarely use the Sidebar for anything, but you can get out of the Toolbar by using VO + Shift + Up Arrow, to stop interacting. I’m sure the same would work for the Sidebar. Then use VO + END to move focus to the web content area, then use VO + Shift + Down Arrow to interact. - Brad - On

This sounds like stating the obvious, however, its worth mentioning that if the event hasn't begun, or if it is connected but no one is yet speaking it can seem as though nothing is happening. I've been confused and/or a little anxious on more than one occasion thinking there were tech issues.
