Thanks, Dave. This is fascinating. I have to say that I haven't seen an audio
book on a physical CD in years. Brings back a lot of memories of long car
trips. :) I get my books from Bookshare, Bard, or Apple Books and Kindle, so
have never bothered using the Overdrive system, but I'm surprised
Donna,
And lastly I do not share these M4B books with anyone, since they are
copyrighted content. Once I’ve listened to them I delete them from my devices
and computer. I added this comment in case the audiobook police are listening
in.

Donna,
Forgot the obvious. I also borrow audio books in physical audio CD format. I
rip them down to MP3 files and then process as previously mentioned.

I use my local County Library system to find digital audio books. Once I borrow
them, I use Overdrive to do the actual downloading of the MP3 format files.
Then I process them with Audio Book Binder to create the M4B book files that I
sync to my iPhone. Seems like a lot of steps at first, but
Hi Dave,
I suppose we’re getting way off topic, but where di you get books in MP3 format?

Donna, I don’t get audio books in text format. They are usually MP3. These can
be played like any music file, but need to be processed into M4B in order to
play properly in the books app or on an iPod.

Oh, that makes sense, Dave. I still get a lot of books from Bookshare, and
those can be downloaded as Daisy files, so import nicely into Voice Dream. But
I can see how if you just had a text file, this would make for a better reading
experience.

Donna,
When using the iPhone, you could play books by simply placing them into your
music folder as MP3 files, or other audio file types. The problem with that is
that they could be affected by the shuffle feature, so chapters may not play in
sequence. Also you don’t have a convenient way to

Hi,
I tend to prefer the Apple stock apps for reading my audio books, thus when I
use AudioBook Builder to "build" the audio book, it automatically places it
into proper location and makes it the proper m4b format. I guess that it's
entirely possible that VoiceStream Reader does the same
Hi all,
Just curious, why do you use an app like Audio Book Builder or binder, rather
than just pulling the book into an app like Voice Dream Reader? Just wondering
what the benefits are.
Cheers,
Donna

Dave,
Apple had already done this in iOS and did not leave us high and
dry. Same with Catalina. Just a different way to do the same tasks. And
they do not make changes that may result in loss of data or content.

Tim,
Yes, I suppose that iOS is already trending that direction. My audio books show
up in the books app automatically after sync from iTunes on the Mac. Just
wanted to know that I would not lose that capability to sync .M4B files to my
iPhone after Catalina.

Hi Dave,
It's still the same as I outlined. Books in Catalina are all within the Books
app now. In Mojave and below, yes the audio books were in iTunes and eBooks
were in the Books app. This is no longer the case though. I, too, use an
audio book app to create some of my audio book files.
Tim,
I download MP3 audio books from my library’s web site via . Then I convert the
tracks into an audio book using audio book binder. Then I paste them into my
“automatically add to iTunes” folder. Then I sync with my iPhone or iPod.
Without iTunes, what would be the way to paste them into the
I don’t like to work that way. I use audio book binder to create a m4b file
that I can put in my iTunes library. Then I don’t fall victim to the 21-day
limit for library loans.

Hi,
You shouldn't even need to do things that way. As long as your audio books are
on your Mac, when you upgrade to Catalina, they will migrate into the Catalina
Books app. In your Apple ID iCloud pane of System Prefs, make sure that Books
sync to the Cloud, and they should therefore all be

Have not yet gone over to Catalina, and I understand iTunes goes away. I put a
lot of audio books (.M4B format) on my iPhone for listening. Without iTunes,
how would this be done with Catalina?
