Hi y'all
How do you fax from a MacBook Pro? Do you use Pages or TextEdit? Do you use the
print option? Do you have to have any special devices hooked up to your Mac to
do it? And, last but not least, do you need special software other than
TextEdit or Pages?

Gigi

I thought you would need a modem to connect your mac to a phone line or
subscribe to an online faxing service.

Also, most locations that accept fax will also accept e-mail though there
is the issue that generally e-mail is less secure then a fax.
Most financial institutions have some form of messagingn system built into
their web that should prevent third parties from receiving the information.

Yes, you need either a UsB modem or you can use something like, fax.com. If
you have an all in-one printer/scanner/fax, you need to connect the device via
the phone port. Then, when you want to fax, you will pick the fax device from
the popup button instead of the printer. You can
So, this is a printer/scanner/faxer you're talking about? When you say the
phone port, I assume, quite naturally, that you mean the RJ11 jack on the HP?
Assuming that's how it's configured?

Yes, exactly. Connect a phone line to the RJ11 port and you should be good
to go if the device has faxing capabilities. YOu can even configure receiving
fax preferences in System Preferences in the Print and Scan preferences for the
device.

Ah, so, this is not one of those all in one jobs that you have to use a touch
screen for then? I'm sure you know exactly what I mean. Better see how much
for one then. Thanks.

For an all in one unit? I didnt' spend that kind of money on mine. At
least half of that at least. You can get all in-ones for $150 or so I think,
depending on the model. I have an 8500 because I got a deal on it and it has
the wireless capabilities built in.

Hi Ray, John, Gigi, Chris, and Others
I find it hard to believe you need to spend that kind of money ($595) to Fax
from your Mac. A quick check of the Apple Support forums brought up a

Hi All,
Here's a relatively recent article (November 2012) that outlines the current
options for Faxing from a Mac and the history behind this topic. It also
describes the options like the email services John Panarese mentioned. You can
read it in Safari Reader (Command-Shift-R).

So, you're saying that the zoom and the other device will indeed still work
under Mountain Lion?

Hi Ray,
Yes, the Zoom and USRobotics USB modems will still work under Mountain Lion if
you connect them into a USB port, and then plug a phone line into the RJ11 jack
at the other end. Then you basically use the Print dialog window to send your
output to Fax instead of to a designated
Hi Ray,
OK, I looked up the support pages for USRobotics and Zoom. The USRobotics
product page gives a download link to a script:

Hey GG,
I subscribe to myfax.com.
When I have a document I want to fax, I just attach the file to a
blank e-mail Message.
I insert the fax # e.g. 14445556...@myfax.com.
I type a subject and reserve the body of the message fora cover page
if necessary.
The price is $10 monthly or $110 annually.
Ah, well worth saving.
So, did I understand you to say that most use the Zoom? IF so, wonder why?

yourself up on EFax?

was easy and sending faxes takes no time. It's accessible and simple, just how
