Well I am a fairly new Mac user but I have done a little experimenting with this ticking sound thing and this is what happens on my Macbook. When I download a file I have to interact with the download list to get the progress. If I interact a second time I am interacting with the group

Hi Brett, One of the things using a hotspot is good for is taking care of the bug in Preview where you lose your place if you switch applications in the middle of reading. This is annoying, because VoiceOver's losing where you were seems to be a bug with the way focus is handled

Regarding the first question: Not sure how to get the ticking to return. I've never actually heard ticking sounds for anything other than the Apple Software Update progress - all other ones are quiet with VO. Maybe I've inadvertantly turned it off, as I think softwareupdate logs in under another
