I bought a backpack so when I'm not using my MacBook I just pop it in there. If I usually sling it over one shoulder but if I need both hands I can put it on all the way. In other words, I don't lock it down, I keep the laptop with me. If you must lock it then you might want one of these:

Hi I am always using my Air in public. I am writing this email on the train to work at the moment. I had similar concerns to you when I first got my air but very soon got over them. I use it in coffee shops all the time. I would tend to get a seat inside rather than one on the street though.
