To get rid of the Preview pane in Mail, position yourself on the horizontal
splitter between the message headers and the body, bring the mouse (VO-Cmd-F5),
then do a physical mouse click with the trackpad, mouse, or number 5 if you
have Numpad Commander enabled.

Well, I can actually get through a lot more messages more quickly with the PP
turned off, because I don't have to wait for the message to load if I don't
want to read it.
I tend to interact with the mail table and delete hundreds of messages at a
time based on their subject lines.

I've never been fond of the preview pane either. Although I don't think
scrolling is an issue with Voiceover, Preview pane requires a lot more
scrolling when using Zoom, plus I can have smaller windows open if I don't mind
stacking.
