Re: My experience upgrading the SSD in a late 2010 Macbook Air
The only comment I'd like to add is that OWC is an excellent company and you can feel confident in conducting business with them. The customer service staff are very helpful and try to assist in answering any questions. On May 26, 2011, at 7:34 PM, Bryan Jones wrote: Hello All, A few months ago I purchased a refurbished Macbook Air to replace the combo of my ipad and mac mini. I chose the maxxed-out eleven inch late 2010 MBA figuring I could survive a couple of years with the 1.6 GHz CPU and 4 GB of RAM, but also realizing I would need to upgrade the 128 GB SSD sooner rather than later. Last week I purchased a 240 GB SSD upgrade and was able to install this new drive with the itsy bit of vision I have left and I think this upgrade could be performed by anybody who has a bit of close-up vision or has sighted assistance, and also by totally blind folks who are patient and are confident in their computer repair and upgrade skills. If you aren't familiar with the dangers of static electricity and oily fingertips, the law of wandering tiny screws, and the tendency of tall coffee cups to become unbalanced when placed near a laptop, you should probably leave this one alone or get somebody else to do it for you. grin The 2010 MBA's have an easily removable bottom cover that gives complete unimpeded access to the internal SSD, which is apparently the single upgradable part on this model of Macbook. The drive I purchased came with the two small screwdrivers needed to remove and replace the cover and SSD. I had only one step where I needed to use my vision, in combination with my iphone 4's video camera / magnifier. That step was locating the existing SSD and the single screw that holds it in place. The SSD in this MBA does not look or feel like a traditional hard drive. It is more like a traditional RAM module, just a small, flat circuit board with a row of chips on it. It is rectangular and measures approximately 1 inch by 4 inches and just a few millimeters thick. I had some difficulty locating and identifying the SSD module as it lies flat against the bottom of the mainboard and has no physical features that really make it recognizable to the fingertips. To help myself recognize what the SSD feels like, I removed the new SSD from it's packaging and gently ran my fingertips over the module to get an idea of what I should be feeling for inside the MBA. One end of the SSD module has a small screw hole and the other end has a male connector that slides into the female counterpart on the MBA's mainboard. The male connector is a small extension of the circuit board and has a small offset slot that helps identify which side should face up or down during insertion. Be sure to feel this slot on the existing SSD as you are removing it so you can know which side should face up or down. It is a snug fit and took a little gentle but firm wiggling to remove the old module and insert the new one. I used the accessible and free application called Super Duper to clone my existing SSD to an external USB drive and then back to the new SSD and this seems to have worked flawlessly. There are some claims that this new SSD has better performance and some features that will help prolong it's usable life, but for me it was all about the extra storage space so I'm not planning to run any geek tests. smile I usually purchase mac upgrade parts from Other World Computing, aka OWC, and that's where I got this SSD. The OWC drives for the late 2010 MBA currently come in four sizes: 180, 240, 360 and 480 GB. They are not cheap but as far as I can tell they are the only SSD upgrades currently available and approved by Apple for this model MBA. Here's a link to the OWC site for these drives: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Aura_Pro_Express OWC has some good installation instructions on their site, and a quick Google returns a number of other hits with step-by-step instructions for performing this upgrade, Here's a pretty clear one: http://www.wholelottarob.com/gadgets/2011/5/9/120gb-not-on-macbook-air-not-enough-consider-upgrade-up-to-4.html If anybody would like to discuss my experience with this in more detail, please feel free to contact me off list. Re: Confused about Gmail
That article is a little old now. There are some things that GMAIL has changed and there are weirdnesses that Apple has done with SPAM / Junk folders in 10.6.5 I believe. Except for possibly the use of the Spam folder, I think most of the article will still work. The big change on the GMAIL side is the creation of Important folder that attempts to figure out what you really want to read. Have a great weekend! word processing on the mac
Good morning listers, I have recently purchased an imac. Thus far I have moved my email to it, used it for my itunes to manage media, and browse the internet. I will move my pc over to it using vmware fusion. the question is this: what are the most accessible word processing programs out there. I need some access to doing columns and tables. Morning list. I am going to be going to get a new mick for my birthday which ofcorse is today. I have a question about connecting usb. Is there anything I will need to do after connecting the usb cable to the mac. I am using a mini from 2009. Is there anything in prefrensiz that I will need to change or will it just work? Re: word processing on the mac
Hi Richard: For word processing, the recommended apps are in the iWork suite, that includes pages, numbers and keynote. The simplest app to work with is text edit. But, I'm not sure how well it would handle columns or tables. Finally, while you can't use MS Office for Mac, there is something called open office that people are successfully using. I don't have much info about this program either. But, you may find more info in the archives of Macvisionaries. Hmm, I don't encounter this much any more. I believe that there is a link after the first 5-6 names if it is like other address fields then it will probably show up as a button that you have to route the mouse to and then do a vo-shift-space or mouse click in order to expand. Re: Help with references in Pages 09
Hi Thomas, You asked earlier about writing in APA style format for Pages 09. I don't use this myself, but I did a Google search and found this web page, titled Apple Still Doesn't have an APA Template for Pages?: http://www.frameloss.org/2009/07/16/apple-still-doesnt-have-an-apa-template-for-pages/ Go to the link for APA Template for Pages 09 and download the file, apa.template, then open this in Pages 09. This doesn't solve the issue of the reference style format, but might be of assistance if you are supposed to adhere to APA style writing in your paper format. I know there are web cites that people use, such as citation builder, son of citation, and bibme, to fill in forms and obtain references back in APA (or other styles). These seem rather contrived to use. If you have an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, there is a free iCite APA app that is an app version of the WriteCite.com web cite, and will take care of formatting APA style reference lists: iCite APA (free) by MasterGraphics Pty Ltd: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/icite-apa/id429178021?mt=8 I don't know if you have an iOS device, but assuming you do, you could start in the main iCite APA Menu page (Menu is 1st of the 3 buttons at the bottom of the screen), then choose a category from the list that you want to use for citation (e.g., Books, Journals, Internet, etc.) and then select the appropriate sub-category (e.g., could be an Edited Book, Book, or Book Chapter in the first instance). Then fill in the text fields (Author, Title, etc.) and double tap the Preview button in the top right corner. You'll be show the formatted citation on the Preview Citation screen, and you can either flick right and double tap the Save Citation button at the bottom left to save the citation locally in the app (for later access in the Saved Citations menu -- 2nd of 3 buttons at the bottom of the screen), or flick right again and double tap the Email Citation button at the bottom right. (Although the app is supposed to italicize titles in its formatting, I don't think this information is preserved if you mail yourself this information.) If you want to look up a reference, you can choose the Worldcat Search (first item in list) on the Menu screen. For example, if you want to find citation references to books by a certain author, double tap the text box to enter the name, then flick right to the Lookup button and double tap. You'll get a number of matching results (prefixed with numbers -- hash marks surrounding a catalog record number -- followed by the reference citation. If you want to do a title search or subject search, move to the picker item in the center of the screen, just below the Lookup button, and flick up to set the keyword to Title. Then go back to the text field (e.g., flick left twice), double tap to edit the entry; delete the old search term and type in the title, then flick right to the Lookup button and double tap. You need to input a recognizable title -- a few keywords won't work. If that's a problem, search on the author's last name. As before, you can select a citation entry, then either save it or email it. The other thing you could do, following the comments on the linked web page at the start of this post that gave the APA style template for Pages 09, is to maintain your references in a database using the free BibDesk program, and then run one of the CiteInPages AppleScripts to insert the references into Pages in the APA style. Again, I don't have experience using this, and this may be more work than you want to do, but it may be worth the investment if you're going to do a lot of research paper writing in this format, and if there isn't an update to Pages that adds these features. BibDesk is one of the tools that is used with TeX (or the TeXShop program), but is freeware and can be separately used to maintain your bibliography database. I think the easiest solution for the present would be to use the iCite APA app, or a web page equivalent if you don't have an iOS device. I'll give you the URL of the CIteInPages AppleScripts. (BibDesk is linked on that page). • CiteInPages (AppleScripts for inserting BibDesk references into Pages) http://jhh.med.virginia.edu/main/CiteInPages HTH. I know it is doable in other programs such as MS Word, but unfortunately I have not access to a version of it, which can insert the right APA-requirements . It can also create the reference list where it basically lists all sources such as books, websites etc. with their authors all correctly listed and formatted. What I do at this
