Re: accessible media player app to play FLAC files

2015-11-24 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

I disagree.

I find tons of things from the app store. What're you looking for exactly?
True, there are some things that aren't there, but saying you can't get
anything at all hardly is incredibly an unfair statement.

You can't really get that much from the mac app store nowadays. I see this
as a definite plus. Google "VLC and you'll see the video LAN site. Its free,
and open source.

A Quick Tip for Those Experiencing Any App Updating Problems in iTunes

2015-11-24 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

I am cross-posting this to both the Mac Visionaries and v iPhone mailing
list because I think the steps described below will apply to both the
Windows and Mac versions of iTunes.

Today, in iTunes for Windows, I received a couple of download errors when
attempting to update a couple of apps. The errors, effectively stated, that
the download URLs were invalid.

NOTE 1:
I use Jaws 16 for Windows on this particular PC. I make extensive use of
the Jaws Touch Cursor to interact with both iTunes and the iTunes Store.
The computer in this scenario does not have an actual touch screen.

Summary:
My solution was to cancel the download session, then right-mouse click on
each of the problem apps which displayed a list of options including one to
show the app in the App Store. Once there, I simply clicked the download
button for the app at which point it downloaded properly. Upon checking for
updates, again, the problem app was no longer listed.

NOTE 2:
The reason I update my apps via iTunes on a desktop is because, as of iOS
9.x, updated apps are no longer automatically copied from the iOS device to
the computer during sync sessions.

Steps:
The scenario in iTunes for Windows goes something like the following:

1.
Open iTunes and go to the Update apps section. A list/grid of all the apps
that have updates available should be displayed. If not, then click the
Check for Updates button.

2.
Select Update All.

3.
As the apps are successfully updated, they will be removed from the
list/grid.

4.
If there is an app that cannot be updated for various reasons, a dialog box
will be displayed with a cursory explanation as to why the download failed.
At this point you can attempt to resume the download, at which point it will
be successful; if not, go to the next step.

5.
If any of the apps fail to download, iTunes will be placed into pause mode.
Your only option at this point will be to attempt to resume the download at
which point failure will occur again. The only way to get out of this loop,
at least, the only way I have discovered, is to close iTunes.

6.
Re-open iTunes. You should immediately be returned to the most recently
viewed area of the application. In this scenario, the Apps update area.

7.
At this point your update list/grid will only contain the apps that have
failed to update. Right-mouse click on each app. From the resulting
Shortcut list, select "Show in iTunes Store".

8.
Once the app is displayed in the iTunes Store, simply select the Download
button. Upon successful download, the app will no longer appear in the Apps
Update area of iTunes.

Good Luck,

Mark

Re: accessible media player app to play FLAC files

2015-11-24 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
I think that’s fair. Developers just aren’t seeing any value in the Mac App
Store anymore and seem to be gradually transitioning away from it. Both
because of the sandboxing and pricing policies, it just isn’t a very good fit
for the Mac ecosystem as a whole. Good summary here:
http://www.cultofmac.com/300067/mac-app-store-broken-developers-sick/

And, after the recent certificate expiration fiasco, and Apple’s general
disrespect of the Mac, I’m just fine with that. It is a shame, and I don’t say
developers are not motivated by their own self-interest too, but I just don’t
bother looking there anymore. Downloads from the web are almost always more
recent.

The really interesting question now is: what would iOS look like, if it were an
open platform? Would Apple’s money-making scheme come undone, or would Apple
merely be proven right as developers raked their customers over the coals?

Re: secret folders for passwords

2015-11-24 Thread E.T.
1Password is a great choice for a password manager. Windows, OS X
and iOS are supported and kept in sync. If you also use Windows they
offer a package deal and they will throw in a free upgrade for iOS.

This app also supports credit card support so you do not need to
enter your card every time you use it. Lots to look at, but you get I
think a 30 day trial.

Oh and you use a secure password to unlock the app every time you
use it, easier to remember just one password.

Yes, the agent had me test it on text edit, pages, and we even noticed it some

we'll see what the boys and girls at the genious bar say.
There is a work around for pages, but the agent admits it should not be

Took the suggestion of a friend and backed up and upgraded iMac to

Backed up and upgraded without a hitch.
 Problems still exist.
 Upgraded pages.

Wow, how interesting. Have you ever tried rebuilding your mailboxes or taking
your account off-line and then bringing it back? Or even simply removing the

Today I was on the phone for over 2 hours with apple accessibility and they
could not fix my problem, so they have made an appointment with the apple store
for me on Saturday. Below in point form is my problem and what apple
accessibility said and I would like your opinions.
2014 February bought new iMac running mavericks.
Tried using pages and navigation did not work.
Left iMac on desk for over a year.
November 2015 turned on mac same problems.
Asked for help on various lists, answer was basically get training.
Took the suggestion of a friend and backed up and upgraded iMac to elcapitan.
Backed up and upgraded without a hitch.
Problems still exist.
Upgraded pages.
On a body of text arrow up reads the text, arrow down jumps to menu extras.
Tested on notes app same thing.
Spoke with a list member on the telephone, who confirmed that my navigation on
the mac is screwed.
Same member confirmed that I am using proper vo commands.
Member suggested I call apple accessibility.
Today called them.
The lady who helped me was named Christie.
She had me test both pages and notes and confirmed I am doing nothing wrong and
according to her opinion it’s a software problem.
She had me hold down p, r, and option, command and then power up.
Nothing changed.
She had me hold down shift and power up.
Nothing changed.
She had me hold down command r and power up.
She tried to reinstall osx but the window announced signing into appstore and
then progress bar busy.
We tried again.
Checked if wifi was connected and it was.
Still the same thing.
She said there was nothing more she could do, she thinks it’s a software
problem and that I need to take it into the store to see if they can fix it.
I’m glad that it isn’t me, and that mac training as some suggested is not the
issue.
However I’m very sad because obviously something is very wrong.

had success using them as a pair. I see that this is supposed to be a

iTunes albums dimmed

2015-11-24 Thread Janine Smith
Hi all. Since updating to 10.11.1 from 10.10.5 voiceover in the albums grid in
iTunes keeps saying dimmed. Every time I go through the list of albums I get
"dimmed". Nothing has changed except doing an updated. It is not happening on
my window machines with jaws nor on the iPhone running the latest software.
Tried signing in and out of iTunes along with deauthorising the Mac. Tried
unticking the box showing my iCloud music library. Music on the computer is
fine when looking at downloaded music and fine when I have on sort by song. As
soon as I retick the show iCloud music library and sort by album, it goes back
to dimmed, even for the downloaded music. Any ideas people? Many thanks,
regards Janine

This may be one of those times when you have to Google the songs, then
once you get the list, search for them on Apple Music individually. I
know it might really stink doing it that way, but it may be your best
option. And, once you get the list, you could find them on ITunes and add
them to a CCLI playlist. That's personally what I'd do.

did a search for CcLI top 100 on spotify, they would come up. Not sure if
that is true with apple music or not.

Sad to hear this. Really, I wanted to be able to access spotify for

app, and tried to use voiceover keys to navigate, but did not look like
I could do anything in the app. The only thing I could use were the
menus. Is anyone on the list using spotify? Thanks,

Brian

Subject: accessible media player app to play FLAC files

Hello folks,
The subject says it all. I am looking for an accessible mac app that lets
me play FLAC files. I have some on my mac that I need to listen to, but I
didn’t know iTunes doesn’t play those right off the bat without converting
them. Really would rather just listen to the FLAc files as they are.
Thanks,

Brian

No, not necessarily. Did your IMac not come with an Apple wireless keyboard
though?

If it did, then I'd ask them to try replacing the keyboard as well, or at the
very least try paring another one in the store, and see if that helps.

It would be our luck that it's nothing more than the keyboard just being
totally shot, and if that be the case, then that should be one heck of an easy
fix.

Hello Zoe,

I think you’ve been very unfortunate with your iMac. If it’s possible, try to
persuade Apple to replace your machine as it sounds like you got a bad one.

The online help you got was spot on. I went through similar steps with a friend
who recently bought her first Mac and was having strange problems with it.
Luckily, she lives near Paris, too, so I’ll be spending Friday with her trying
to sort out her problems.

Cheers,

Thank God I got apple care when I bought this iMac.
What do you all think of this?
Curious what your opinions are.
Regards
Zoe

You can't really get that much from the mac app store nowadays. I see this as a

RE: oppinions wanted

Yes it did, I meant I don’t have another keyboard on hand. I did change the
bateries a few days ago and I checked the batery status in the settings and all
is well. I like your I idea about them trying to pare another keyboard and see

No, not necessarily. Did your IMac not come with an Apple wireless keyboard
though?

If it did, then I'd ask them to try replacing the keyboard as well, or at the
very least try paring another one in the store, and see if that helps.

It would be our luck that it's nothing more than the keyboard just being
totally shot, and if that be the case, then that should be one heck of an easy
fix.

Chris, when we spoke last evening, I had her check the quick math. It was

Re: The Mac and Braille

2015-11-24 Thread Devin Prater
No, braille on the Mac has always been a little bad. VDA on Windows isn't much
better though, I assure you, since the developers of NVDA don't even use
braille. Anyways, thanks for the tips.

The subject says it all. I am looking for an accessible mac app that lets me

 Subject: Spotify question

 Hello all,
I was wondering if spotify is accessible on the mac. I downloaded the
app, and tried to use voiceover keys to navigate, but did not look like I
could do anything in the app. The only thing I could use were the menus.
Is anyone on the list using spotify? Thanks,
 Brian

oppinions wanted

2015-11-24 Thread Zoe Fiogkos
Today I was on the phone for over 2 hours with apple accessibility and they
could not fix my problem, so they have made an appointment with the apple
store for me on Saturday.

Took the suggestion of a friend and backed up and upgraded iMac to
elcapitan.
Backed up and upgraded without a hitch.
Problems still exist.
Upgraded pages.
On a body of text arrow up reads the text, arrow down jumps to menu extras.
Tested on notes app same thing.
Spoke with a list member on the telephone, who confirmed that my navigation
on the mac is screwed.
Same member confirmed that I am using proper vo commands.
Member suggested I call apple accessibility.
Today called them.
The lady who helped me was named Christie.
She had me test both pages and notes and confirmed I am doing nothing wrong
and according to her opinion it's a software problem.
She had me hold down p, r, and option, command and then power up.
Nothing changed.
She had me hold down shift and power up.
Nothing changed.
She had me hold down command r and power up.
She tried to reinstall osx but the window announced signing into appstore
and then progress bar busy.
We tried again.
Checked if wifi was connected and it was.
Still the same thing.

She said there was nothing more she could do, she thinks it's a software
problem and that I need to take it into the store to see if they can fix it.

I'm glad that it isn't me, and that mac training as some suggested is not
the issue.
However I'm very sad because obviously something is very wrong.
Thank God I got apple care when I bought this iMac.
What do you all think of this?
Curious what your opinions are.
Regards
Zoe

2015-11-24 Thread Vaughn Brown
Hi Zoe,

You did well in following the logic of trouble shooting. I think the
Apple folks at the store tend to be wonderful and they will help you
the very best they can. You also may want to see if there are free
training at the store for learning the Mac. I think there might be but
don't quote me.

Again, you did well. Now it is time to let someone else look at it
from a more technical point of view. I'm glad you have an appointment.
Let us know how it goes.

Good luck! I've never been able to get it to work, and on the Windows side,

Unless he's moved that down, that's what they used to be.

Re: oppinions wanted

2015-11-24 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Honestly, there is one very obvious thing which I cannot believe no one told
you to check. Do you have quick nav enabled? Press your left and right arrow
keys together at the same time. Not with your vo keys held down. I'm
literally saying just press left and right arrows together. You want to be
sure it says quick nav off.

Also, it surprises me to absolutely no end that they didn't have you change out
the double A batteries in the wireless keyboard that comes with the IMac. It
could be that your batteries are nearly dead, and therefore it's producing
strange results.

Also, I'm shocked they didn't have you try plugging in a wired USB keyboard,
even if it's not an apple based keyboard, and see if your navigation works.

If nothing else, they should have offered to try replacing your wireless
keyboard entirely and send you out a new one, being you said you still have
Apple Care.

The other thing that I'm absolutely shocked beyond belief that they didn't have
you do was to run a disk permissions repair. I understand now in El Capitan,
this isn't as easily possible, but you were having this issue before in
Mavericks, which definitely! you could have ran disk permissions repair, as
well as an over all disk repair from there.

I'm not doubting the things you're telling us, but it just seems unusually
weird that Apple, especially a senior advisor that works for Accessibility
wouldn't have had you try these things. I mean, I'm Apple certified, and
that's one of the very first things I would have had you check. Resetting PRam
with command+Option+P+R is good, but that may a been overkill. Also, I'm not
sure if the IMacs would do this, but maybe you may wanna call Accessibility
back and ask them to help you reset your SMC if that can be done.

Chris.

Hey Chris,
Sad to hear this. Really, I wanted to be able to access spotify for
work-related things. They have the Christian copyright licensing top 100 songs

also be able to hear the arrangements of the songs on there using it. Another

spotify I could access this. Oh well,

Thanks,

Brian

Re: Spotify question

2015-11-24 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

Yeah,

Nothing's coming up the way you're describing to search. I'm sure that the
songs are there though in general.

This may be one of those times when you have to Google the songs, then once
you get the list, search for them on Apple Music individually. I know it
might really stink doing it that way, but it may be your best option. And,
once you get the list, you could find them on ITunes and add them to a CCLI
playlist. That's personally what I'd do.

Cheers,

Anne

RE: oppinions wanted

2015-11-24 Thread Zoe Fiogkos
Sorry didn’t think to mention that. They did check quick nav. Mind you I
checked that with the member who helped me and with another friend.
As for the keyboard there isn’t another keyboard on hand.
Should they have mailed me out a keyboard? I will defenately mention that at

Chris.

Yes it did, I meant I don’t have another keyboard on hand. I did change the
bateries a few days ago and I checked the batery status in the settings and all
is well. I like your I idea about them trying to pare another keyboard and see

No, not necessarily. Did your IMac not come with an Apple wireless
keyboard though?

If it did, then I'd ask them to try replacing the keyboard as well, or at
the very least try paring another one in the store, and see if that helps.

It would be our luck that it's nothing more than the keyboard just being
totally shot, and if that be the case, then that should be one heck of an easy
fix.

Feeling defensive after my complaint, he pointed out that their Wave system
remote control has Braille on it and he also said that their mobile app for
SoundTouch speaker works with voiceOver. So do keep writing/eamiling Bose

Thanks for the update, even if I could figure out what damn buttons to push it

From JAWS, to NVDA, to VoiceOver no results.

Very frustrating.

Hi!
The only answer i got was to check the documentation on how to do this.
On my soundlink mini iii you have to plug a usb device into the speaker with
the update on and then hold down some buttons.
But i really haven’t got much in to this so i don’t know.

Anders,

If you get any answers I'd appreciate it.

It's not stricktly needed but would be good to have.

The release notes say that the battery life gets a boost.

Thanks for the help.

Your Mac Visionaries list

The Mac and Braille

2015-11-24 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello everyone,

It used to be that you could press a router key on a Braille display to bring
focus to that cell. These days, pressing a router key performs the default
action for the item. I looked through all the VO commands and couldn’t find any
that would do what I wanted, but I discovered that pressing a router key above
a space, then pressing the combination for either left or right arrow brings
the focus to that point.

I’ve also found that the display shows the first line of a page when it gets to
the bottom of that page, and pressing the Down or Page Down combination brings
focus to the next page.

I’m working with a Braillino, so it may be different on other displays.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Bose Soundlink II speaker firmware update using the Mac.

2015-11-24 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi Sadam,

I live in the UK. I went onto their website, www.bose.com (which I think is
their worldwide website), chose the country, UK in my case, and then clicked on
support link, then contact us link, and then chose e-mail, and on this page
finally I was able to find an e-mail form which I filled up. I stated my
problems and submitted it and as a result got first a standard confirmation and
then a technical support representative wrote to me. It's long winded but
that's the only way I was able to bring the accessibility problems to their
attention. The e-mail form is very detailed. they want lots of details about
you and many of the fields are mandatory marked with asterisk. There are a
couple of awkward radio buttons to choose from regarding how you might or not
to be sent info and then 'submit' button which eluded me for a while. I had to
use a combination of tab or item chooser menu to find "submit' link. It's not
a button but link so you won't find it by using vo+command+j. If the form
doesn't get sent , it means that you have missed out on a field or it is
wrongly filled.

Hope this helps.
